Chapter 7: The Letter Laura Left Behind

I spent the entire night searching through old memories.

Every conversation.

Every argument.

Every moment before Laura died.

I tried to find something I missed.

Something she tried to tell me.

But grief changes your memory.

It turns some moments into shadows.

It hides things you don’t want to see.

The next morning, I went to Laura’s old family home.

The place had been empty for years.

Her parents moved away after the funeral.

Ethan was the only person who still had access.

Mark came with me.

“You sure about this?””

I looked at the locked door.

“No.””

Then I opened it.

Inside, everything smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

We searched through boxes.

Old photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

Then Mark found something.

“Daniel.””

I walked over.

He held a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you find that?””

“Inside Laura’s old desk.””

I grabbed it.

The handwriting was hers.

The woman I loved.

The woman I lost.

I opened it carefully.

*Daniel,*

*If you’re reading this, something happened that made you look for answers. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.*

I stopped breathing.

Mark looked at me.

*Ethan has been angry with me for years. He believes our family deserved more. He thinks I chose you over them.*

My hands shook.

*But the truth is, I was afraid. Not of him hurting me. Of him hurting Emily.*

I closed my eyes.

A painful realization hit me.

Laura knew.

She knew her brother was dangerous.

*Daniel, if anything happens to me, protect our daughter. Do not let anyone convince you that money matters more than her safety.*

The letter continued.

*I found out Ethan was stealing from my father’s company. I confronted him. He said he would make sure I regretted choosing my new family.*

My breathing became uneven.

Laura had been carrying this fear alone.

And I never knew.

The final line destroyed me.

*I trust you with Emily more than anyone in this world. Don’t let anyone make you doubt that.*

I held the letter against my chest.

For years, I thought I failed Laura because I couldn’t save her.

But maybe the last thing she needed from me wasn’t saving her.

It was protecting our daughter.

Mark quietly said:

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

There was something in his expression.

“What?””

He pointed outside.

A car.

Parked across the street.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

I stepped toward the window.

The car started moving.

“Get the plate number.””

Mark grabbed his phone.

A few seconds later, he looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the phone toward me.

The plate belonged to a rental company.

But the driver information had just updated.

I stared at the name.

Rebecca.

She was still involved.

Before I could process it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice.

Cold.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

“Ethan.””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You finally found Laura’s letter.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Does it matter?””

“You threatened my daughter.””

“No.””

His voice became darker.

“I warned you.””

“You tried to take her inheritance.””

“That money belongs to family.””

“Emily is family.””

A pause.

Then Ethan said:

“She’s the reason Laura died.””

My entire body went still.

“What did you say?””

“I think you deserve to know the truth.””

I looked at Mark.

He was listening.

Ethan continued.

“Your wife wasn’t killed by an accident.””

The room went silent.

My voice barely came out.

“What?””

“She discovered what Rebecca and I were planning.””

My blood turned cold.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Then the call ended.

But one thing remained.

May you like

A question that had haunted me for years.

How did Laura really die?
