Chapter 4: The Secret Before The Ceremony

The drive home was silent.

Emily slept in the back seat, exhausted from a day no child should ever experience.

I kept looking at her through the mirror.

Her small body curled beneath her blanket.

Her stuffed rabbit tucked under her chin.

A few hours earlier, she had been standing in a wedding dress believing she was about to lose her father.

I gripped the steering wheel.

I wanted to focus on Rebecca.

I wanted to hate her.

But one sentence kept repeating in my mind.

*Ask your brother what happened the night before your wedding.*

Why would she mention Mark?

What did my brother know?

When we arrived home, I carried Emily inside.

Maria followed quietly.

“Daniel,” she said.

I turned.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“I should have told you sooner.””

My expression changed.

“Told me what?””

She looked down.

“Rebecca had been acting differently for weeks.””

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“Why didn’t you say anything?””

“Because she told me you knew.””

I stared at her.

“She said you agreed that Emily needed space.””

I closed my eyes.

Another lie.

Another person manipulated.

Maria looked ashamed.

“I thought you were trying to handle it privately.””

I sat beside Emily’s bed and watched her sleep.

“How long?””

“About a month.””

A month.

For a month, Rebecca had been planning this.

A month while I was choosing flowers.

Writing vows.

Planning a future.

A month while my daughter was quietly becoming afraid.

My phone rang.

Mark.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me what happened.””

There was silence.

Then:

“She told you.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

“Daniel, listen—”

“No. You listen. My daughter was almost sent away on my wedding day, and Rebecca said I should ask you about the night before.””

Mark sighed.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

Another silence.

“That’s the problem.””

I stood up.

“Tell me everything.””

Mark took a breath.

“Last night, I saw Rebecca talking to someone outside the hotel.””

“Who?””

“She didn’t know I was there.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who was she talking to?””

Mark hesitated.

“Her ex.””

I froze.

“What?””

“They were arguing.””

I walked toward the window.

“What did they say?””

Mark’s voice lowered.

“She said the marriage had to happen quickly.””

“Why?””

“Because she needed access to something.””

My blood ran cold.

“Access to what?””

Mark didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Your company account.””

I felt the room spin.

Rebecca wasn’t just trying to remove Emily.

She wasn’t just trying to control our family.

She was hiding something much bigger.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward the wedding ring still sitting untouched on the table.

All those promises.

All those plans.

Maybe the wedding wasn’t supposed to be the beginning of a family.

Maybe it was supposed to be the beginning of a trap.

“Mark,” I said.

“Yeah?””

“I need you to help me find out everything about Rebecca.””

He went quiet.

Then:

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“There’s one more thing.””

I waited.

“I checked the name of the person she was meeting.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“And?””

Mark’s voice became serious.

“The man she was with wasn’t just her ex.””

A pause.

“He was someone who already knew our family.””

I looked at Emily sleeping peacefully upstairs.

Then at the wedding photos scattered across the table.

“Who was he?””

Mark answered.

May you like

And the name he said made my entire body go cold.

“Your late wife’s brother.””
