Chapter 2: The Woman Behind The Smile

The chapel had never felt smaller.

Every guest was staring.

Some looked at Rebecca with disbelief.

Others looked at me like they were waiting for an explanation.

But I couldn’t take my eyes off Maria’s hands.

The second note shook slightly between her fingers.

“Give it to me,” I said.

Maria stepped forward.

Rebecca immediately moved between us.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

The same voice she used when she wanted people to believe she was the reasonable one.

“You’re ruining our wedding because of a misunderstanding.””

I looked at her.

“A misunderstanding?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward Emily.

“She probably misunderstood something she heard.””

Emily flinched.

That tiny reaction told me everything.

Children don’t react that way when they misunderstand.

They react that way when they remember.

Maria handed me the note.

I opened it.

*Daniel will eventually understand. Emily needs to learn that life cannot always revolve around her. After the wedding, things will change.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

“Things will change?””

Rebecca sighed.

“Because they need to.””

The guests grew quieter.

I could feel my family watching.

My older brother Mark stood near the back, his arms crossed.

“Rebecca,” he said, “what exactly were you planning?””

She looked at him.

“This is between me and Daniel.””

“No,” I replied.

“It stopped being private when you tried to remove my daughter on my wedding day.””

Rebecca’s eyes flashed.

“I was trying to create boundaries.””

“By packing her suitcase?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Emily was still holding my hand.

Her fingers were cold.

I looked down at her.

“Sweetheart, why didn’t you tell me earlier?””

She swallowed.

“Because Rebecca said you would be angry.””

My heart sank.

“Angry at who?””

She looked at Rebecca.

“Me.””

I closed my eyes for a second.

All the little moments suddenly looked different.

Rebecca telling Emily she was “too clingy.””

Rebecca getting annoyed when Emily asked to sit with us during movie nights.

Rebecca saying, “Daddy and I need adult time,” every time my daughter wanted attention.

I had explained it away.

I had convinced myself every family needed adjustment.

But I had ignored the signs.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Daniel, you’re being emotional.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“My daughter thought I was going to abandon her.””

“I never said that.””

“You wrote it.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what it’s like.””

“What?””

“To finally have a chance at a normal marriage.””

I stared at her.

“Normal?””

She looked around the room.

“Everyone expects me to become an instant mother. But Emily isn’t my responsibility.””

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Even her own parents looked shocked.

Rebecca realized too late what she had admitted.

She tried to recover.

“I love her.””

Emily looked up.

Rebecca continued.

“But love doesn’t mean she controls everything.””

I felt Emily’s grip tighten.

That was enough.

I turned away from Rebecca.

“Maria, take Emily outside for a moment.””

Emily looked worried.

“Are you coming?””

I knelt beside her.

“I’m right here.””

“Promise?””

I touched her cheek.

“I promise.””

Maria led her toward the chapel entrance.

The moment Emily was gone, I faced Rebecca again.

“You have one chance to tell the truth.””

She crossed her arms.

“I have nothing to explain.””

“Then explain the suitcase.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I asked Maria to prepare for a temporary arrangement.””

“Temporary?””

“Yes.””

“Where was Emily supposed to go?””

Rebecca looked away.

That was her answer.

I walked toward her.

“You planned this before today.””

“No.””

“Then why was her suitcase packed?””

Silence.

Her mother finally spoke.

“Rebecca?””

Everyone turned.

Her own mother looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t know about this.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

“Mom, stay out of it.””

That was when I realized something important.

Rebecca wasn’t upset because she was caught.

She was upset because she lost control.

The woman I thought I knew had spent months carefully building an image.

And today, in front of everyone, it cracked.

The wedding coordinator quietly approached.

“Daniel, should we clear the chapel?””

I looked at the altar.

The flowers.

The candles.

The chairs arranged for a celebration that would never happen.

Then I looked at Rebecca.

“I want everyone to stay.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“If you wanted to make my daughter disappear quietly, you should have chosen a day without witnesses.””

The room went silent.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“You wouldn’t dare.””

I reached into my pocket again.

Not for the ring.

For my phone.

“I’m about to show everyone exactly what you planned.””

Her expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

I unlocked the screen.

Because earlier that morning, before Emily ran to me, my security camera had captured something.

Something Rebecca didn’t know existed.

I pressed play.

May you like

And the first words that came from the speaker made Rebecca’s face turn completely white.

“Once Daniel says his vows, Emily will finally be out of the way…”
