Chapter 9: The Last Lie
The truth should have made everything clearer.
Instead, it made every memory I had ever trusted feel contaminated.
My father's funeral.
My aunt's funeral.
The photographs in our family albums.
The stories my father told about his childhood.
All of it could have been manufactured.
I stood beside Edward's wounded body while Agent Reed called for an ambulance.
Ryan held the photograph.
Vanessa stared at it.
“That's impossible,” she whispered.
Ryan shook his head.
“I verified it.””
“Where?””
“At the courthouse.””
He handed me another document.
A death certificate.
The name listed was my aunt's.
But the photograph attached wasn't hers.
It was the woman Daniel had shown us.
I looked at Vanessa.
“How?””
“She had access to the records,” Vanessa said.
“Through Daniel?””
“No.””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Through your father.””
I felt a cold anger rising.
“My father knew?””
“He suspected.””
“That's not the same thing.””
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“He discovered the identity fraud six months before he died.””
“Then why didn't he expose her?””
“Because she had Lily.””
I looked toward my daughter.
She stood near Ryan, watching us.
“What did she want?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“The trust.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The trust.
Everything came back to the same place.
Forty-seven million dollars.
My identity.
Lily.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
My father.
And the woman pretending to be my aunt.
The ambulance arrived.
Paramedics rushed to Edward.
Before they lifted him onto the stretcher, he grabbed my hand.
“Don't trust…”
His eyes moved toward the road.
Then he lost consciousness.
“Don't trust who?”” I asked.
No answer.
Agent Reed stood beside me.
“We need to move.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere secure.””
I looked at Lily.
She shook her head.
“No.””
“What?””
She stepped toward me.
“We can't go with him.””
Reed frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel said the safe place was the courthouse.””
Everyone went quiet.
“What courthouse?””
“The federal building.””
Reed's expression changed.
“Who told you that?””
“Daniel.””
Reed pulled his phone.
He made a call.
“Lock down the federal building.””
He listened.
Then his face went pale.
“Now.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
“Someone just accessed the evidence room.””
Ryan swore.
“From inside?””
Reed nodded.
I looked at the ledger.
“What's in that room?””
“Copies of your father's files.””
“And the original?””
Reed looked at me.
“Your father never gave us the original.””
“Then where is it?””
He pointed at the ledger.
“That's the original.””
I looked down.
A realization hit me.
The ledger wasn't just a list.
It was the key to identifying the entire network.
Daniel didn't need my money.
He needed the names.
I opened the final pages.
There were handwritten notes beside several names.
One name appeared again and again.
*D. Thompson.*
I stared.
“Daniel Thompson?””
“No,” Reed said.
I looked at him.
“Then who?””
Reed didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Michael…”
She touched the page.
“That's your father.””
I looked again.
My father's initials.
D.T.
But my father's name had always been Thomas Thompson.
Thomas.
Not Daniel.
“Why would my father use Daniel's initials?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He didn't.””
I felt a chill.
“Then who did?””
A voice came from behind us.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
The woman from the monitor stood at the edge of the driveway.
Daniel's mother.
The woman who had stolen my aunt's identity.
She wore a dark coat.
Her gray hair was pulled tightly back.
Two armed men stood behind her.
She smiled.
“Hello, Michael.””
Reed drew his weapon.
“Federal agent. Drop your weapon.””
She laughed.
“I don't have one.””
She raised both hands.
“I don't need one.””
One of the men behind her fired.
Reed returned fire.
Ryan grabbed Lily and pulled her behind the ambulance.
Vanessa pushed me toward the garage.
“Run!””
We ran.
Bullets struck the concrete wall.
I heard Reed shouting.
Then silence.
We reached the basement.
I slammed the door.
Vanessa locked it.
Lily was breathing hard.
Ryan crouched beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not personally.””
“But you knew she existed.””
“Yes.””
“Who is she?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Her name is Evelyn Carter.””
I stared.
“Carter?””
She nodded.
“Your father's mother.””
I felt the room disappear around me.
“My grandmother?””
“Yes.””
“She died before I was born.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She disappeared.””
I remembered the photograph from my father's box.
An old woman standing beside him.
The photograph had been torn in half.
I had assumed it was damaged.
Now I understood.
My father had deliberately removed her.
“Why?””
“Because she was the architect.””
“Of what?””
“The network.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“My grandmother built the entire thing?””
“She inherited it.””
“And my father tried to destroy it?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“Her son.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything was connected.
Daniel wasn't just some criminal.
He was my uncle.
My grandmother had been pretending to be my aunt.
My father had spent years trying to escape his own family.
And Vanessa had been placed in my life because they wanted access to the trust.
I looked at her.
“And you?””
She didn't answer.
“Were you working for them?””
“I was.””
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
“Did you marry me for the money?””
She looked directly at me.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
But this time, I didn't look away.
“Then when did that change?””
“The night Lily was taken.””
I stared.
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I went after her.””
“You found her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you bring her home?””
“Because Daniel threatened to kill you.””
I looked at Lily.
She was crying.
“I heard everything,” she whispered.
I walked toward her.
“Lily…”
She shook her head.
“Don't.””
“I'm sorry.””
“You didn't know.””
“No.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But Mom did.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
Lily looked at me.
“Are you really my dad?””
I knelt in front of her.
“Yes.””
She studied my face.
Then slowly stepped forward.
She hugged me.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in twelve years, something about my life felt real.
Then Ryan shouted.
“Michael!””
I turned.
The basement wall had begun to vibrate.
A hidden panel was opening.
Vanessa backed away.
“What is that?””
Ryan pulled the panel open.
Inside was a narrow steel compartment.
There was no money.
No weapon.
Just a small wooden box.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father's handwriting.
I unfolded it.
*Michael,*
*If you have found this, then everyone has failed to protect you.*
My hands trembled.
*There is one final truth I never told you.*
I read on.
*The $47 million was never the inheritance.*
My breath caught.
*The inheritance is the evidence.*
Below that was one final paragraph.
*The person who can destroy the network is not you.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Lily.
Then Ryan.
My eyes moved to the final line.
*It is the woman you married.*
I slowly lowered the letter.
Vanessa stared at me.
“What did he say?””
I couldn't answer.
She took the letter from my hand.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she began shaking.
“No.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your father knew.””
“Knew what?””
She pointed at the final sentence.
“He knew I was the only person who could expose them.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her lips parted.
Before she could answer, her phone rang.
The screen displayed one word.
*DANIEL.*
She answered.
“Hello?””
Daniel's voice came through.
But this time, he wasn't speaking to her.
He was speaking to me.
“Michael, you finally found the letter.””
I stepped closer.
“How did you know?””
“Because your father sent me a copy before he died.””
My blood ran cold.
Daniel continued.
“There's one thing he didn't tell you.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Vanessa didn't marry you to steal the inheritance.””
I looked at her.
“She married you because your father ordered her to.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“And your father wasn't trying to protect you from me.””
The basement seemed to go silent.
“He was protecting me from you.””
Vanessa's face went white.
Daniel continued.
“Ask her what happened the night your father died.””
The call ended.
I turned slowly toward my wife.
She was crying.
“Vanessa?””
She couldn't look at me.
“What happened that night?””
She closed her eyes.
And when she finally spoke, her voice was barely a whisper.
“I was there.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“With your father.””
She nodded.
“And I wasn't there to save him.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“I was there because he asked me to kill him.””
