Chapter 1: The Door Upstairs

The laughter came again.

A man's voice.

Low. Familiar.

Then Vanessa laughed.

I froze at the bottom of the stairs with my hand still wrapped around the strap of my work bag.

For twelve years, I had known my wife's laugh in every form.

The polite laugh she used with neighbors.

The quiet laugh she gave our children when they were younger.

The breathless laugh she saved for stupid jokes that weren't actually funny.

This was different.

This was intimate.

Private.

The kind of laugh a husband notices because he has heard it before.

I looked toward the ceiling.

“Vanessa?””

The laughter stopped.

For three seconds, there was absolute silence.

Then a man's voice said something too softly for me to understand.

My heart began pounding.

I climbed the first step.

Then another.

The staircase creaked beneath my shoes.

“Vanessa?”” I called again.

Nothing.

I reached the top.

Our bedroom door was closed.

That door had never been locked between us.

Not once in twelve years.

I stood there, staring at the brass handle.

Then I heard Ryan's voice.

“Maybe he forgot something.””

My stomach dropped.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it every Saturday morning for nearly a year.

Ryan.

The lawn worker.

The man who had just been standing outside my house with his mower.

The man Vanessa had invited inside while I was supposed to be driving to work.

I grabbed the handle.

The door opened.

Vanessa stood beside our bed.

Ryan was near the window.

Neither of them moved.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Sunlight poured through the curtains, illuminating dust floating above the carpet.

My eyes moved from Vanessa to Ryan.

Then to the bed.

The sheets were disturbed.

One of my pillows was on the floor.

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

“Michael,” she whispered.

I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing in my ears.

Ryan raised both hands.

“Listen, man—”

“Don't.””

My voice sounded strangely calm.

Ryan stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me I misunderstood.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I laughed once.

It wasn't because anything was funny.

“Tell me,” I repeated.

Vanessa looked down.

That tiny movement destroyed whatever hope I had left.

I stepped backward.

“How long?””

“Michael, it's not what you think.””

I stared at her.

“That's what people say when it is exactly what you think.””

Ryan moved toward me.

“I swear, nothing happened.””

I turned on him.

“You were in my bedroom.””

“I know how it looks.””

“You were in my bedroom.””

Ryan swallowed.

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

“Please don't make this worse.””

Something inside me cracked.

“Worse?””

I pointed at the bed.

“You brought him into our bedroom.””

She flinched.

Ryan shook his head.

“You need to let her explain.””

I looked at him.

“You don't get to tell me what I need.””

“Michael,” Vanessa said softly, “Ryan isn't—”

Her phone vibrated on the nightstand.

All three of us looked at it.

The screen lit up.

A message preview appeared.

*DANIEL: We need to talk before Michael finds out.*

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

Too late.

I had already seen the name.

“Daniel?””

She grabbed the phone and held it against her chest.

“It's not—”

“Who is Daniel?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It's complicated.””

I stared at her.

“No. Cheating is complicated. A man's name appearing on your phone isn't.””

Ryan suddenly looked nervous.

That frightened me more than anything Vanessa had done.

I pointed toward the phone.

“Who is Daniel?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Someone from my past.””

I shook my head.

“You're lying.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Michael, you need to leave.””

I looked at him slowly.

“Excuse me?””

“You're angry. You shouldn't be here.””

I almost laughed.

“This is my house.””

Ryan glanced at Vanessa.

That glance told me something.

They had discussed me.

Maybe they had discussed this exact moment.

I walked toward the nightstand.

Vanessa backed away.

“Michael, don't.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“Because if you see what's on that phone, everything changes.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She said nothing.

I held out my hand.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

“Give it to me.””

“Michael, please.””

Ryan suddenly said, “Vanessa, you have to tell him.””

She turned toward him.

“You promised.””

“I promised to protect you.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

I looked between them.

“Protect her from what?””

Neither answered.

Then Vanessa's phone vibrated again.

This time there was no preview.

Just the name.

*DANIEL THOMPSON.*

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And when she opened them, the fear in them wasn't fear of me.

It was fear of Daniel.

I took one step backward.

“Who the hell is Daniel Thompson?””

Vanessa whispered four words that made the entire room go cold.

“My husband.””

I stared at her.

May you like

Ryan lowered his head.

And suddenly, catching my wife with another man wasn't the worst thing I had discovered that morning.
