Chapter 5: The Locked Room

Vanessa pulled me away from the front door.

“Don't answer.””

Daniel knocked again.

Three times.

Slow.

Patient.

Almost polite.

“Michael,” he called.

“I know you're in there.””

I whispered, “How does he know?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He always knows.””

I looked around the darkened house.

“Where's your phone?””

“In my purse.””

“Call 911.””

“I already did.””

That surprised me.

“When?””

“When the lights went out.””

Another knock.

Daniel spoke through the door.

“Vanessa, you don't have to be afraid.””

She closed her eyes.

“He always says that.””

I moved toward the hallway.

“Back door.””

She followed.

We had taken three steps when the back door swung open.

I stopped.

A figure stood outside.

Ryan.

He held a flashlight in one hand.

“Michael,” he whispered.

“Get down.””

We dropped.

A loud crack shattered the silence.

The kitchen window exploded.

Glass sprayed across the floor.

Vanessa screamed.

Ryan grabbed her and pulled her behind the island.

“Stay down!””

Another shot struck the cabinet.

I stared at the hole.

My hands went numb.

This wasn't an affair.

It wasn't a family scandal.

Someone was shooting at us.

Ryan crawled toward the hallway.

“There's a safe room in the basement.””

I looked at him.

“You knew about a safe room?””

“Your father built it.””

“Of course he did.””

Ryan grabbed my shoulder.

“Now, Michael.””

We moved.

Vanessa crawled behind us.

The basement door was hidden beneath a rug.

Ryan pulled it open.

We descended into darkness.

He shut the door and locked it.

The room beneath the basement was smaller than I expected.

Concrete walls.

Metal shelves.

An old desk.

A generator.

And dozens of boxes.

I turned toward Ryan.

“You want to explain?””

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

“Later.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“You were supposed to be mowing my lawn.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You lied to me for a year.””

“So did everyone else.””

Vanessa whispered, “Ryan saved my life.””

I released him.

“How?””

Ryan looked at her.

“Three months ago, Daniel found her.””

I turned.

“You told me Daniel had disappeared.””

“He had,” Vanessa said.

“Then how did he find you?””

“He never lost track of me.””

Ryan walked toward the shelves.

“He's been monitoring your financial accounts.””

“My accounts?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because of your father's inheritance.””

Ryan opened a metal box.

Inside were bank statements.

Photographs.

Legal documents.

He placed a folder on the desk.

“Your father knew Daniel would come after the inheritance.””

I opened it.

There were transfers.

Millions of dollars.

Accounts in Switzerland.

The Cayman Islands.

Delaware.

And one account in Atlanta.

The account holder was listed as *Vanessa Thompson*.

I looked at her.

“You said you never took the money.””

“I didn't.””

“Then why is your name here?””

“Because Daniel used my identity.””

Ryan pointed to the dates.

“Look closer.””

I did.

The transactions began eleven months before Vanessa and I married.

They stopped six months after our wedding.

Then they started again after my father's death.

My skin prickled.

“Someone accessed the account eighteen months ago.””

Ryan nodded.

“The week your father died.””

I stared at the numbers.

“Who?””

Ryan slid another page toward me.

A signature.

I recognized it immediately.

My father's.

Except something was wrong.

I had seen my father's signature thousands of times.

This one was almost perfect.

Almost.

“Forgery,” I whispered.

Ryan nodded.

“Exactly.””

Vanessa leaned over the desk.

“That's what we were trying to prove.””

I looked at her.

“You and Ryan?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father left instructions.””

I looked toward the boxes.

“What instructions?””

Ryan pulled out a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

*MICHAEL.*

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

My father's handwriting.

*If you're reading this, Daniel has returned. Trust Vanessa only when she tells you about the second certificate.*

I looked up.

“The second certificate.””

Vanessa went pale.

Ryan said nothing.

I turned the page over.

There was another sentence.

*The first marriage was never the real secret.*

My heart began pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa whispered, “Your father had another legal identity.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He wasn't Edward's husband.””

She swallowed.

“He was Edward's wife.””

Silence.

I read the sentence again.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if you understand what they were doing.””

Ryan pulled another file from the box.

Inside was a birth certificate.

I read the name.

Then I read it again.

The child listed on the document was born thirteen years before my father died.

Mother:

*Vanessa Collins.*

Father:

*Edward Collins.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

“That's impossible.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I stared at the birth certificate.

“Whose child is this?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Ryan did.

“Yours.””

My breath stopped.

“My what?””

“Your daughter.””

I dropped the paper.

“No.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You're telling me I have a daughter?””

“She was born before we met,” Vanessa whispered.

“How could she be mine?””

“Because Edward wasn't her biological father.””

I stared at her.

“Then who was?””

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

“You.””

The word echoed inside my skull.

“No.””

“You were seventeen.””

I shook my head.

“I would remember.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Ryan stepped between us.

“Michael, your father erased the records.””

“Why?””

“To protect you.””

“From Daniel?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“For twelve years?””

“Yes.””

“You knew I had a daughter?””

“She isn't with us.””

My throat tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“She disappeared.””

I couldn't speak.

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

“Who took her?””

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

“Daniel.””

The basement suddenly felt too small.

I walked toward her.

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“You knew she existed and you never told me?””

“I was trying to find her.””

“You let me live twelve years thinking I had no child.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

I turned away.

Then something clicked behind us.

Ryan raised his head.

“Did you hear that?””

We all went still.

A mechanical hum came from the wall.

The safe room had another door.

Ryan walked toward it.

He pressed his ear against the metal.

“Someone's on the other side.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

He slowly reached for the handle.

A voice came through the steel.

A woman's voice.

Young.

Shaking.

“Dad?””

I couldn't breathe.

Vanessa collapsed against the wall.

Ryan looked at me.

The voice came again.

“Dad, please.””

I stared at the door.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it once.

In an old home video my father had kept hidden.

A little girl laughing.

My daughter.

May you like

Alive.

And standing behind that door.
