Chapter 3: What My Father Knew

I drove without knowing where I was going.

The photograph stayed open on my phone.

Vanessa stood beside my father.

She was younger.

Her hair was darker.

But there was no mistaking her.

My father was smiling.

His arm rested casually around her shoulder.

They looked comfortable.

Too comfortable.

I pulled into an empty parking lot and stopped.

My hands were still on the steering wheel.

Thirteen years ago.

One year before Vanessa and I met.

My father had known her.

I called Daniel.

Straight to voicemail.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then I noticed another detail in the photograph.

My father wasn't wearing the watch he had owned for twenty years.

Instead, he wore a silver watch I had never seen before.

On the table beside him sat a folder.

A red folder.

Across the top was a logo.

*Thompson Financial Group.*

My father's company.

I searched through my messages.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

After my father's death, his attorney had given me a box of personal documents.

I had barely opened it.

I drove home.

Vanessa was gone.

Her car wasn't in the driveway.

I walked inside and found the house unnaturally quiet.

The bedroom door was still open.

I stood there for a moment.

Then I went to the attic.

My father's box was exactly where I had left it.

Dust covered the lid.

I carried it downstairs.

Inside were old photographs, bank statements, legal papers, and letters.

I began sorting.

Nothing.

Then I found a small black notebook.

My father's handwriting covered the first page.

*If Michael ever asks about Vanessa, tell him the truth.*

I froze.

I turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

*She was never supposed to become his wife.*

My heart slammed against my ribs.

I turned another page.

More handwriting.

*Vanessa knows about the account. Daniel knows about Vanessa. Neither knows what I moved.*

I sat down.

The notebook slipped from my hands.

“What did you do, Dad?””

A floorboard creaked behind me.

I spun around.

Nobody.

I stood.

“Vanessa?””

Silence.

Then I heard the front door close.

I rushed downstairs.

Vanessa stood in the foyer.

Her face was wet with tears.

She looked at the notebook in my hand.

“Where did you find that?””

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Michael.””

“Were you with my father?””

She stopped.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

“Why?””

“I told you.””

“No. You told me nothing.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“I was twenty-four.””

“And?””

“I was in trouble.””

“What kind of trouble?””

She swallowed.

“Money.””

I laughed.

“My father helped you?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She shook her head.

“He gave me a job.””

“What kind?””

“Bookkeeping.””

I stared at her.

My father had owned a construction company with millions moving through it every year.

“You worked for him?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Eight months.””

“And Daniel?””

Her eyes closed.

“He worked there too.””

I felt sick.

“My father employed both of you?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa looked at the notebook.

“Daniel stole money.””

The room went silent.

“How much?””

“Almost four million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“And my father covered it up?””

“No.””

“Then why are you in his trust?””

“Because I helped him recover it.””

I stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don't care what you believe.””

She sounded different now.

Tired.

Afraid.

“Michael, your father discovered Daniel had been moving money through shell companies. He was going to report him.””

“Then why didn't he?””

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

“With what?””

“My life.””

I stared at her.

“And Ryan?””

She looked away.

“Ryan was helping me.””

“Helping you do what?””

“Find the money.””

I shook my head.

“So you weren't sleeping with him?””

“No.””

“You brought him into our bedroom.””

“I needed somewhere private.””

“That's the worst excuse I've ever heard.””

“I know.””

She began crying again.

“I couldn't tell you.””

“You could have told me anything.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“My dead father made you promise what?””

“That if Daniel ever came back, I would never tell you the truth until the money was safe.””

I felt cold.

“What money?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“The money your father supposedly left you.””

I said nothing.

She stepped closer.

“Michael, the inheritance isn't what you think.””

“What is it?””

“Your father moved the money before he died.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“Then how do you know about it?””

“Because Daniel is looking for it.””

My phone vibrated.

Both of us looked down.

A new message.

From Daniel.

*You should ask Vanessa why your father left her $2.8 million.*

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa's face went white.

I slowly looked up.

“Two point eight million dollars?””

She shook her head.

“I never took it.””

“Then why does he think you have it?””

“I don't know.””

Another message arrived.

*And Michael? Ask her about the second marriage certificate.*

My blood turned cold.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What second marriage certificate?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

She backed away.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Tell me now.””

She covered her mouth.

Then she whispered:

“Michael... there isn't just one marriage certificate with Daniel's name on it.””

My phone vibrated again.

A photograph appeared.

This time it wasn't Vanessa.

It was my father.

Standing beside Daniel.

And between them was a third man.

A man I recognized.

A man who had been dead for eleven years.

My father's former business partner.

Beneath the photograph, Daniel had written:

*Your father didn't have one secret family, Michael. He had two.*

Vanessa looked at the picture.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“That's not the worst part.””

She pointed at the dead man's face.

May you like

“He wasn't your father's business partner.””

“He was your father's first husband.””
