Chapter 2: The Name on the Account
I don't remember leaving the bedroom.
I remember the hallway.
I remember gripping the railing.
I remember Vanessa calling my name behind me.
But everything else was blurred.
My wife had another husband.
That sentence kept repeating inside my head.
Another husband.
Not an affair.
Not a mistake.
Not some drunken night.
A husband.
I reached the kitchen and stood beside the counter where I had left my laptop.
My hands were shaking.
Vanessa came downstairs slowly.
Ryan followed her.
I turned around.
“Stay upstairs.””
Ryan stopped.
Vanessa said, “Michael, please.””
“I'm talking to my wife.””
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“I care about her.””
I stared at him.
“You're not helping yourself.””
“I know.””
“Then leave.””
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
He walked out through the back door.
I heard his footsteps cross the patio.
Then his truck started.
I waited until the sound disappeared.
Vanessa remained by the kitchen entrance.
She looked smaller than she had twenty minutes earlier.
“Sit down,” I said.
She did.
I remained standing.
“How long have you been married to him?””
“I don't know how to answer that.””
“Try.””
She looked at her hands.
“Almost three years.””
The room spun.
“Three years?””
She nodded.
“You've been married to another man for three years?””
“Yes.””
I put my hand on the counter.
“How?””
“I thought it was over.””
“What was over?””
“Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“You're going to explain every word.””
She wiped her cheek.
“Daniel and I were married before I met you.””
I felt a strange sense of relief.
Then she continued.
“We never properly divorced.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He disappeared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“People don't disappear from marriages, Vanessa.””
“He did.””
“And you just decided you were single?””
“I filed.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Where?””
She didn't answer.
“Where, Vanessa?””
“Georgia.””
“Then why aren't you divorced?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Because Daniel filed something before he disappeared.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I stared at her.
“You've been lying to me for twelve years.””
“I didn't want you to know.””
“That part is obvious.””
She began crying.
I felt no satisfaction watching it.
I just felt exhausted.
“Why did you marry me?””
“Because I loved you.””
“You loved me while you were still married?””
“Yes.””
“That isn't an answer.””
She covered her face.
I walked to the counter and opened my laptop bag.
My laptop was exactly where I had left it.
Beside it was a stack of mail.
One envelope caught my attention.
It was addressed to me.
The return address belonged to an Atlanta law firm.
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a document.
My father's estate.
My eyes moved down the page.
*Beneficiary: Michael Thompson.*
That wasn't unusual.
My father had died eighteen months earlier, leaving me a substantial inheritance.
But another page was attached.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
There was a financial account I had never heard of.
A trust.
A very large trust.
And the authorized secondary beneficiary was listed as:
*Vanessa Thompson.*
I looked up.
“What's this?””
Vanessa's face changed.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying again.””
“I swear.””
I slapped the paper onto the counter.
“Your name is on my father's trust.””
She stood.
“Michael—”
“How did my father know you?””
“He didn't.””
“Then why are you listed?””
“I don't know.””
I pulled out my phone.
“I'll call the lawyer.””
Vanessa rushed toward me.
“No.””
I stopped.
“Why not?””
“Because you don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
She shook her head.
“You can't call him.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel will know.””
I stared at her.
“Why would Daniel care about my father's lawyer?””
She said nothing.
That was when I remembered Ryan.
The way he had looked at me.
The way he had told me to leave.
The way Vanessa had whispered, You promised.
I grabbed my keys.
“Where are you going?””
“To find out who Daniel Thompson is.””
Vanessa stepped in front of the door.
“Michael, please don't.””
I looked at her.
“For twelve years, I thought the biggest lie in my life was that you loved me.””
Her face crumpled.
“But now I'm starting to think the biggest lie is that you married me for love.””
I walked around her.
She didn't stop me.
My phone rang before I reached the car.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
Calm.
Older.
Controlled.
“Michael Thompson?””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Daniel.””
I stopped.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway behind me.
The blood drained from her face.
Daniel continued.
“You've started looking at the trust, haven't you?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“How do you know about the trust?””
A pause.
Then he said something that made my fingers go numb.
“Because your father didn't leave that money to you.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What?””
Daniel's voice lowered.
“He left it where Vanessa could access it.””
I stared at the house.
“Why?””
“Because your father knew exactly what she was.””
The line went dead.
I stood there, unable to move.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text message appeared from Daniel.
It contained one photograph.
Vanessa.
My wife.
Standing beside my father.
May you like
And beneath the photograph was a date from thirteen years earlier.
One year before I had ever met her.
