Chapter 9: The Final Secret

Michael looked different when I entered his hospital room.

Not weaker.

More determined.

Like he had finally decided he was done running.

I closed the door behind me.

“You know who shot you?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked toward the window.

“I need you to understand something first.””

I waited.

“I spent fifteen years thinking the worst person in my life was Richard.””

He paused.

“I was wrong.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“Thomas.””

I wasn’t surprised.

But hearing the name still hurt.

“Thomas shot you?””

Michael nodded.

“He was the one controlling everything.””

I sat down.

“Then why did everyone blame Richard?””

“Because Richard wanted power.””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“Thomas wanted control.””

I listened.

“They were partners. But Richard was reckless. He wanted money. Thomas wanted the family.””

I frowned.

“The family?””

Michael nodded.

“He wanted the Carter name. The company. The influence.””

I thought about Thomas.

The man who had always been around.

The man nobody questioned.

“The perfect friend.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“Exactly.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?””

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What about Vanessa?””

Michael was silent.

Then:

“She saved my life.””

The words shocked me.

“What?””

“She came back.””

“When?””

“After years.””

Michael stared at the ceiling.

“Richard was getting careless. Thomas was planning something bigger. Vanessa knew she had to do something.””

“Then why did you think she shot you?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because I saw someone wearing her coat.””

I froze.

“Her coat?””

He nodded.

“Same hair. Same clothes.””

“Then?””

“Then the person turned around.””

“And?””

Michael looked at me.

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

I leaned forward.

“Who was it?””

Before he answered, the hospital room door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

Her face was pale.

“I know.””

Michael looked at her.

“You found him?””

She nodded.

“Thomas.””

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He has Lily.””

Everything stopped.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I tracked his car.””

“Where is she?””

Vanessa handed me a piece of paper.

An address.

I recognized it.

The old Carter estate.

The house my father abandoned before he died.

The house where all our family secrets began.

Michael tried to stand.

“No.””

I grabbed him.

“You’re staying here.””

“I have to come.””

“You were shot.””

“I lost fifteen years.””

His eyes met mine.

“I’m not losing another minute.””

I understood.

Because I felt the same.

We drove there together.

The old estate looked exactly like a memory.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A place that should have been empty.

But lights were on.

Inside, we found Thomas waiting.

And Lily.

She was sitting beside him.

Safe.

Unharmed.

But scared.

“Daddy!””

I ran to her.

I held her.

Then I turned toward Thomas.

“Why?””

He smiled.

“Because I wanted you to finally understand.””

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

“I protected her.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re insane.””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Ask your father why he never knew the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Thomas continued.

“Your father didn’t die in an accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Thomas smiled.

“He was killed.””

The room went silent.

My entire body went cold.

“By who?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn’s old portrait hanging on the wall.

Then back at me.

“Your mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Thomas pulled out a folder.

“Everything is inside.””

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

And saw something on her face.

Fear.

Not of Thomas.

Of the truth.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a death certificate.

The second was a photograph.

The third was a handwritten confession.

And at the bottom of the page was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

My mother’s.

Michael stared at the paper.

“No.””

Thomas smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at Michael.

At Vanessa.

At the evidence in my hands.

My entire life had been built on a lie.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*You still don’t know the biggest betrayal.*

And below it was a picture.

A recent picture.

Taken inside the hospital.

Of Michael.

Sleeping.

With someone standing beside his bed.

May you like

Someone who should have been nowhere near him.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.
