Chapter 5: The Brother’s Prison

The next morning, I sat at my kitchen table staring at a cup of coffee that had gone cold.

I hadn’t slept.

I couldn’t.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily’s face.

The fear in her eyes.

The way she looked at me before she disappeared.

A father is supposed to protect his child.

But my family had turned my own home into a battlefield.

Michael sat across from me.

He looked exhausted.

Older than he had the night before.

Evelyn sat beside him, silent.

Vanessa was still gone.

No calls.

No messages.

Nothing.

I looked at Michael.

“Start from the beginning.””

He nodded.

“I was twenty-eight when I found the records.””

“What records?””

“Financial transfers from your father’s company.””

I frowned.

“My father’s company failed.””

Michael shook his head.

“No. It was destroyed.””

I listened.

“Someone moved money out slowly. Small amounts. Enough that nobody noticed at first.””

“Who?””

Michael looked toward Evelyn.

“She knows.””

My mother swallowed.

“His name was Richard.””

I froze.

“Richard?””

Michael nodded.

“Your father’s younger brother.””

My uncle.

The man everyone said died in a car accident before I was born.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Daniel, your entire childhood was built on impossible things.””

I hated that he was right.

“What happened to him?””

Evelyn answered.

“Richard was supposed to inherit everything.””

“But Dad had the company.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“Your father changed his will.””

Michael continued.

“And Richard never forgave him.””

I stood up.

“So he destroyed the company?””

“He tried.””

Michael’s voice became darker.

“But when I found proof, he knew I could expose him.””

I looked at him.

“What did he do?””

Michael was quiet for a long moment.

Then he pulled up his sleeve.

A scar crossed his arm.

Another near his shoulder.

I stared.

“He did that?””

Michael nodded.

“He kept me somewhere underground.””

My stomach turned.

“For fifteen years?””

“Yes.””

“How did you survive?””

Michael looked away.

“Because someone brought me food.””

The room went silent.

I remembered Lily.

The sandwich.

The kindness.

The connection.

“Who?””

Michael looked at Evelyn.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I did.””

I stared at her.

“You helped him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because Richard threatened you.””

I felt the anger rising.

“So you chose silence.””

“I chose keeping you alive.””

“You let me believe my brother was dead.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“And I regret that every day.””

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa walked inside.

Her clothes were wrinkled.

Her eyes were red.

She looked like someone who hadn’t slept.

“Where is Lily?””

I stepped toward her.

“You tell me.””

She flinched.

“I don’t know.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You expect him to believe you?””

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“I’m not asking him to trust me.””

“Then why are you here?””

She looked at me.

“Because I know how to find her.””

I stared.

“You know where she is?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Vanessa reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small piece of paper.

“I found this in my car.””

I took it.

A single sentence was written.

*The daughter pays for the mother’s betrayal.*

My hands shook.

“What does this mean?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

My mother looked away.

And that was when I understood.

This wasn’t only about Michael.

It wasn’t only about stolen money.

It was about something my family had hidden for decades.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, what did you do?””

Evelyn whispered:

“I betrayed Richard before he betrayed us.””

Michael looked at her.

“You told someone.””

She nodded.

“I thought I was saving my family.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“And instead, you created a monster.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew all of this?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew pieces.””

“Then why did you stay?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard made sure I couldn’t leave.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel, your uncle isn’t the only person who came back from the dead.””

A phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

It was Michael’s phone.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone toward me.

A photograph.

Lily sitting in a dark room.

Alive.

Crying.

And beside her was a person wearing a mask.

A message appeared underneath.

*You want your daughter back? Bring Michael to the place where he disappeared.*

Michael stood slowly.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the picture.

Then whispered:

“That place wasn’t a prison.””

“Then what was it?””

May you like

Michael’s eyes filled with fear.

“It was a grave.””
