Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Family

The photograph stayed in my hand all night.

I stared at it until my eyes hurt.

A single image.

A single truth.

And suddenly, every memory I had started changing.

The family dinners.

The holidays.

The conversations.

Everything.

Because the person standing beside Richard wasn’t a stranger.

It was my father’s closest friend.

Thomas Reed.

The man who had helped raise me after my father died.

The man who attended every birthday.

The man who told me I was like a son to him.

The man who comforted my mother after Michael disappeared.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Thomas?””

She nodded.

“He was involved.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“Of course.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I spent my whole life believing my family was destroyed by strangers.””

My voice shook.

“But it was the people sitting at our table.””

She didn’t argue.

Because she knew it was true.

I found Thomas the next morning.

He was exactly where I expected him to be.

At the old Carter family office.

The place my father built.

The place Michael almost died trying to protect.

When I walked in, Thomas looked up.

He smiled.

“Daniel.””

That smile.

That familiar, comforting smile.

It made me sick.

“You knew.””

His smile faded.

“Knew what?””

“Don’t do that.””

I threw the photograph onto his desk.

Thomas looked at it.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Small.

But real.

“You found it.””

“You were there.””

He leaned back.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

Silence.

Then Thomas sighed.

“Your brother was always too curious.””

I clenched my fists.

“You ruined his life.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at me calmly.

“He ruined his own.””

My anger exploded.

“He was kidnapped.””

“He was reckless.””

“You locked him away.””

Thomas stood.

“I protected this family.””

I stared.

“Protected?””

He walked around the desk.

“Your father was weak. He wanted to give everything away. He didn’t understand power.””

I felt disgust.

“You’re insane.””

Thomas smiled.

“Maybe.””

Then he said something that froze me.

“But ask yourself why your mother stayed silent.””

I didn’t answer.

“Why Vanessa married you.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Everyone around you had a reason.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice lowered.

“Even Michael.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“You really think he came back because he missed you?””

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A video.

Michael.

Sitting in the old warehouse.

Before he disappeared.

I pressed play.

His younger voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.””

I watched.

I listened.

Then the video showed something I never expected.

Michael wasn’t alone.

He was talking to someone.

Someone behind the camera.

Someone he trusted.

The person stepped forward.

And I saw the face.

My heart stopped.

Because it was Vanessa.

Younger.

Terrified.

But there.

I looked at Thomas.

“What is this?””

He smiled.

“The truth.””

“No.””

“Your wife was involved from the beginning.””

I stared at the screen.

The video continued.

Michael’s voice:

“You have to tell Daniel.””

Vanessa’s younger voice answered:

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I do, they’ll kill him.””

The video ended.

I stood frozen.

Thomas watched me carefully.

“She didn’t marry you to hurt you.””

“Then why?””

“Because she loved you.””

I looked at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Thomas walked closer.

“She chose between saving you and saving your brother.””

My hands trembled.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He whispered:

“And she chose you.””

I left the office without another word.

I needed answers.

Not from Thomas.

Not from Michael.

From Vanessa.

When I returned home, she was waiting.

She knew.

I could see it.

“You saw the video.””

I nodded.

“Tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was there the night Michael disappeared.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Richard forced me.””

“And you helped him?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I tried to stop him.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her tears fell.

“Because I was twenty-four years old, terrified, and Richard threatened to kill you.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to forgive that?””

“No.””

Her answer surprised me.

“I don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“But I need you to know one thing.””

“What?””

“The person who shot Michael wasn’t me.””

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

Then my phone rang.

The hospital.

I answered.

A nurse’s voice came through.

“Mr. Carter, you need to come back immediately.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Your brother woke up.””

I breathed out.

“Is he okay?””

Another pause.

“He’s conscious.””

“Good.””

“But he asked for you.””

“Why?””

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Because he said he knows who actually shot him.””

I looked at Vanessa.

May you like

Then the nurse finished:

“And he said the shooter is someone you’ve trusted your entire life.””
