Chapter 6: The Place Where He Vanished

The old warehouse stood at the edge of town.

The same place Michael had disappeared fifteen years ago.

I had driven past it hundreds of times without knowing.

A forgotten building.

A piece of abandoned property.

A place nobody cared about.

Except my family.

And whoever had taken my daughter.

The rain fell heavily as we parked outside.

Michael sat in the passenger seat, staring at the building.

He hadn’t spoken for ten minutes.

“Michael.””

Nothing.

I turned toward him.

“Look at me.””

He finally did.

“What happened here?””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t remember everything.””

“That scares me.””

“It should.””

I swallowed.

“But Lily is inside.””

He nodded.

“And that’s why I’m going.””

Before we got out, Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

For the first time since this nightmare started, she looked completely honest.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words almost hurt more than the lies.

“Sorry doesn’t bring back fifteen years.””

“I know.””

“Sorry doesn’t erase what happened to Lily.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Then why should I trust you?””

She looked at Michael.

“Because I was trapped too.””

Michael opened the door.

“We don’t have time.””

We entered the warehouse.

The smell hit me first.

Damp concrete.

Rust.

Old wood.

The walls were covered in dust.

But someone had been here recently.

Fresh footprints marked the floor.

Michael followed them.

Then stopped.

There was a door at the back.

A door I couldn’t see from the entrance.

He touched the handle.

His hand shook.

“This is where they kept me.””

I looked at him.

“You’re sure?””

He nodded.

“I carved my name into this door.””

He moved his flashlight.

There.

Deep scratches.

M.C.

My brother’s initials.

I touched the marks.

Fifteen years of pain carved into wood.

Suddenly, a speaker crackled above us.

A voice filled the room.

“Welcome home, Michael.””

Michael froze.

The voice continued.

“Did you miss this place?””

I shouted:

“Where is my daughter?””

A laugh.

“You sound just like your father.””

I felt rage explode inside me.

“Show yourself.””

“Patience.””

The lights turned on.

One by one.

At the end of the warehouse stood a man.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his face.

Michael stopped breathing.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, nephew.””

I looked at Michael.

Then at the man.

Because there was no doubt.

This was Richard Carter.

My dead uncle.

The man who supposedly never existed.

“You’re alive.””

Richard smiled.

“Your family has always been terrible at telling the truth.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You took Lily.””

Richard looked amused.

“No.””

He tilted his head.

“Someone else did.””

I felt my heart drop.

“What do you mean?””

Richard looked behind us.

Then smiled.

A door opened.

And someone walked out.

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Vanessa.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was holding Lily’s hand.

My daughter ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I caught her instantly.

I held her so tightly she complained.

But I didn’t let go.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She was crying.

“Daniel…”

Richard laughed.

“She finally chose a side.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You took our daughter?””

She shook her head violently.

“No.””

“Then why is she here?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Because I was trying to get her away from him.””

The warehouse went silent.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Michael stepped forward.

“You betrayed him.””

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“I betrayed everyone.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Vanessa pulled something from her pocket.

A small recorder.

“I recorded everything.””

Richard’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you record?””

She pressed the button.

Richard’s own voice filled the warehouse.

A confession.

A plan.

A truth buried for fifteen years.

But before the recording finished, the lights suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Lily screamed.

When the lights returned, Richard was gone.

And Michael was lying on the ground.

Blood spreading across his shirt.

I ran to him.

“Michael!””

His eyes opened slightly.

He grabbed my hand.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“The person who shot me…”

He coughed.

Then looked toward Vanessa.

“It wasn’t Richard.””

My blood turned cold.

“Then who was it?””

Michael looked past me.

Toward the darkness behind the warehouse.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your wife.””
