Chapter 2: The Brother Who Came Back
I don’t remember the drive home.
I remember Michael sitting in my passenger seat, wrapped in the coat I kept in my trunk.
I remember his hands shaking.
I remember the way he stared out the window like he was afraid someone was following us.
But mostly, I remember one thought repeating in my head.
My brother was alive.
And my wife knew.
When I opened the door to my house, the lights were still on.
Vanessa was waiting.
She stood in the living room wearing a silk robe, holding a glass of wine.
Like she had been expecting me.
But she wasn’t expecting the person behind me.
The glass slipped from her fingers.
Michael stepped inside.
Her face went completely white.
“Michael.””
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Recognition.
I felt sick.
“You know him.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Michael stared at her.
“You told him I was dead?””
The silence was unbearable.
Lily came running downstairs.
“Daddy?””
Then she saw Michael.
Her eyes widened.
“You came back.””
Michael smiled sadly.
“You saved my life, kid.””
Lily looked at me.
“Is he really your brother?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward Lily.
“Go upstairs.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
“No more secrets.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Michael laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“She never changes.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?”” Michael asked.
“Tell him the truth?””
I stepped between them.
“What happened?””
Michael sat down.
For a few seconds, he just stared at the floor.
Then he began.
“Fifteen years ago, I found out something I shouldn’t have.””
I listened.
Every word felt heavier than the last.
“I was investigating money transfers from Dad’s company.””
My father had owned a small manufacturing business before he died.
“Someone was stealing from him,” Michael continued.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
I noticed.
“You knew?”” I asked.
She looked away.
Michael nodded.
“She knew.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Michael leaned forward.
“Your wife wasn’t the person who took me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“But she helped cover it up.””
The room went silent.
Lily looked between us.
“Mom?””
Vanessa immediately softened her voice.
“Lily, go upstairs.””
“No,” Lily whispered.
Michael looked at her.
“Your daughter is the only person in this house who treated me like a human being.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Michael continued.
“Your wife found me after I discovered the truth.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“Stop.””
But Michael didn’t.
“She told me to stay quiet.””
“About what?””
Michael looked directly at me.
“About who was behind everything.””
My stomach twisted.
“Who?””
Before he could answer, Vanessa shouted.
“Enough!””
Everyone froze.
She had never yelled like that before.
Not at me.
Not ever.
Her perfect image cracked.
“You don’t know what you’re bringing back into this house,” she said.
Michael stood.
“I know exactly what I’m bringing back.””
He walked toward her.
“Justice.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You think anyone will believe you?””
Michael smiled sadly.
“You should ask yourself why Daniel still has my old watch.””
I touched my wrist instinctively.
The watch.
The one Michael gave me before he disappeared.
A family keepsake.
Something I wore every day.
Vanessa stared at it.
Michael continued.
“He kept looking for me.””
My eyes burned.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
His voice softened.
“And that was the plan.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What plan?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his worn backpack.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept proof.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t open that.””
That was the first time she sounded afraid of me.
I took the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Names.
Dates.
And one name appeared again and again.
A name that made my hands go numb.
A name I never expected.
I looked up.
“Why is my father’s old business partner involved?””
Michael’s expression turned dark.
“Because he wasn’t working alone.””
I stared at the papers.
“Who else?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa looked away.
That was when I realized the truth was worse than I imagined.
Michael had spent fifteen years hiding.
But Vanessa had spent fifteen years protecting someone.
Someone close.
Someone inside our family.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
And the picture attached made my blood run cold.
It was Lily.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
Standing outside.
Alone.
Under the streetlight.

The message below contained only six words:
*“Ask your brother who betrayed him.””*
