Chapter 8: The Recording That Should Never Have Existed

The conference room fell silent.
Vanessa held the silver USB drive between two fingers.
It looked insignificant.
But everyone understood that whatever it contained could change the outcome of the night.
Richard extended his hand.
"Give it to me.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Not until everyone agrees to hear it.""
Elise folded her arms.
"Then let's hear it.""
Vanessa looked toward the event director.
"Do you have a laptop?""
He nodded and brought one from the nearby office.
Vanessa inserted the USB drive.
A folder appeared on the screen.
Inside were several files with dates spanning almost twenty years.
One was labeled:
*DANIEL CARTER — FINAL MEETING.*
Nia's heart began pounding.
Vanessa clicked it.
A recording began.
At first, there was only static.
Then a familiar voice filled the room.
Daniel Carter.
Nia's breath caught.
She hadn't heard his voice in ten years.
She remembered the warmth of it, the way he used to hum while sewing, and how he always called her his little butterfly.
Now his voice sounded tired.
Weak.
But unmistakably his.
"Vanessa, I don't want to discuss the collection again.""
Vanessa's younger voice answered.
"Then stop making this difficult, Daniel.""
"I've made my decision.""
"You can't simply remove my name from everything.""
"I'm not removing your name. I'm removing your authority.""
A chair scraped against the floor.
Vanessa's voice became sharper.
"You promised me the foundation.""
"I promised you a place on the board.""
"You promised me a future.""
Daniel sighed.
"That was before you started stealing from the scholarship accounts.""
Vanessa leaned closer to the microphone.
"I borrowed money. I intended to return it.""
"With what?""
"My business.""
"Your business was built using designs you didn't create.""
The recording crackled.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"Listen to me. Nia is my daughter. The collection belongs to the foundation. She will inherit the responsibility of protecting it, not the right to sell it.""
Nia closed her eyes.
There it was.
Her father's voice.
His words.
Vanessa paused the recording.
"Did everyone hear that?""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
Vanessa turned toward Nia.
"Your father specifically said you would not inherit the collection.""
Nia looked at the screen.
"He said I would inherit the responsibility.""
"Exactly.""
"Not ownership?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Now you're beginning to understand.""
Elise stepped forward.
"Play the rest.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"There's no need.""
"Play it.""
Vanessa reluctantly pressed the button.
The recording continued.
Daniel coughed.
"There's one thing you need to understand. If you interfere with the trust, the entire collection will be transferred to the independent scholarship board.""
Vanessa laughed.
"And who will control that board?""
"Not you.""
"Then who?""
A long silence followed.
Finally, Daniel answered.
"Evelyn.""
Nia turned toward her grandmother.
Evelyn's face had gone pale.
The recording continued.
"She will protect Nia until she's ready. And if Nia chooses not to become a designer, the collection will still support young artists.""
Vanessa's voice became furious.
"You're giving everything to that old woman?""
"I'm giving it to someone I trust.""
"After everything I've done for you?""
Daniel's answer was quiet.
"You've done enough.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nia looked at Vanessa.
"You knew about this recording.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I did.""
"Then why did you show it?""
"Because it proves your father never intended you to own the collection outright.""
Richard shook his head.
"That's not what the recording proves.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Don't twist his words.""
Elise spoke carefully.
"The recording confirms that Daniel wanted Evelyn to supervise the foundation. It does not invalidate the written trust agreement.""
Vanessa looked furious.
"Those documents can be challenged.""
"Then challenge them.""
"I intend to.""
Richard removed his glasses.
"Before you do, perhaps we should examine the second recording.""
Vanessa froze.
Nia noticed.
"There's another one?""
Richard nodded.
He turned toward the laptop.
"Look at the folder.""
Several files appeared.
The second was labeled:
*JONATHAN HAYES — FINANCIAL REVIEW.*
Brianna stared at the screen.
"My father?""
Richard nodded.
"This recording was made two weeks before Jonathan died.""
Vanessa reached for the laptop.
"No.""
Security stepped forward.
"Mrs. Hayes.""
She stopped.
Richard opened the file.
A man's voice filled the room.
"This is Jonathan Hayes. I am recording this statement because I believe the Monarch Foundation's financial records have been deliberately altered.""
Brianna gripped the edge of the table.
Her father's voice was calm, professional, and slightly tired.
"I have discovered multiple transfers from the foundation's scholarship accounts into Hayes Creative Holdings. The transfers were authorized using a secondary administrative signature.""
A pause.
"That signature belongs to Vanessa Hayes.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
Jonathan continued.
"I confronted Vanessa yesterday. She claimed Daniel had authorized the transfers. However, Daniel's signature on the original authorization does not match the documents submitted to the bank.""
Richard looked at Elise.
"That is important.""
The recording continued.
"I have also discovered that the original Carter collection was assigned to a protected trust. The trust's principal beneficiaries are Daniel's daughter, Nia Carter, and a second beneficiary whose identity remains sealed.""
Brianna looked at Richard.
"That second beneficiary was me?""
Richard nodded.
The recording continued.
"I intend to report the discrepancies to the foundation's board. If anything happens to me, the board should examine the original documents stored in Daniel's blue metal box.""
A sound followed.
A door opening.
Then Jonathan's voice changed.
"Vanessa? What are you doing here?""
The recording ended abruptly.
Brianna stared at the laptop.
"Why did it stop?""
Richard looked at the file information.
"Someone appears to have cut the recording.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
Brianna turned.
"Did you know Dad was investigating you?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you?""
"Your father was confused.""
"Was he?""
"He was under enormous stress.""
"Because of you?""
Vanessa slapped the table.
"Because he was interfering in matters he didn't understand!""
Brianna recoiled.
Nia moved closer to her.
For a moment, neither girl spoke.
Then Brianna whispered, "I think she knows what happened to him.""
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
"Be very careful.""
Brianna's eyes filled.
"Was Dad's death really an accident?""
Vanessa's expression went blank.
Richard stepped forward.
"Jonathan's death was officially recorded as a vehicle accident. But the financial investigation was never completed.""
Nia felt a chill move through her.
"Are you saying someone caused it?""
"I'm saying the circumstances deserve to be examined.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"You people are determined to turn every tragedy into a conspiracy.""
Elise closed the laptop.
"Then you shouldn't have hidden the recordings.""
Vanessa turned toward the door.
"I've had enough.""
But before she could leave, the conference room door opened.
A woman in a dark green suit entered, carrying a thick envelope.
She appeared to be in her late fifties, with short silver hair and a small scar near her eyebrow.
Richard immediately stood.
"Margaret?""
The woman looked at him.
"Richard. I received your message.""
He nodded toward Nia.
"This is Nia Carter. Daniel's daughter.""
Margaret studied her.
Then she looked at the black butterfly gown.
"Good Lord.""
Nia frowned.
"Do you know me?""
Margaret placed the envelope on the table.
"I knew your father. I was the original legal counsel for the Monarch Foundation.""
Richard turned toward her.
"You have the original records?""
Margaret nodded.
"And something more.""
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a certified copy of the foundation's founding agreement.
At the bottom were three signatures.
Daniel Carter.
Marcus Vale.
And Evelyn Carter.
Nia looked at her grandmother.
"You signed the original agreement?""
Evelyn nodded.
Margaret placed another sheet beside it.
"This is the amendment Daniel filed shortly before his death.""
Nia read the first paragraph.
Her name appeared.
So did Brianna's.
But the final clause was different from the version Richard had shown them.
It stated that the two beneficiaries could jointly appoint a new independent director.
And if they could not agree, the original director would retain control.
Nia looked at Margaret.
"Who is the original director?""
Margaret's expression became grave.
"Someone who has been controlling the foundation from behind the scenes for years.""
Richard frowned.
"I thought Daniel appointed Evelyn.""
Margaret shook her head.
"He did initially.""
"Then who replaced her?""
Margaret pointed to the final signature.
The name was written in elegant black ink.
*VANESSA HAYES.*
Nia turned slowly toward the woman standing near the door.
Vanessa smiled.
"Now you understand.""
Richard stared at the document.
"That's impossible. Evelyn never resigned.""
Margaret looked at him.
"She didn't.""
"Then how was Vanessa appointed?""
Margaret removed one final page.
It was a resignation letter.
It bore Evelyn's signature.
But Nia immediately noticed something wrong.
Her grandmother's handwriting had a distinctive slant.
This signature was too straight.
Too deliberate.
Nia looked at Evelyn.
"Grandma, did you sign this?""
Evelyn examined the page.
Then she began shaking.
"No.""
Margaret nodded.
"That's what I suspected.""
Nia looked toward Vanessa.
"You forged my grandmother's signature.""
Vanessa's smile faded.
"Prove it.""
Margaret closed the folder.
"I can.""
She turned toward the event director.
"I have the original handwriting samples, the notarization record, and the witness statement.""
Vanessa took a step backward.
But then she smiled again.
"Even if you prove the signature is false, the appointment was approved by the board.""
Richard frowned.
"Which board?""
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"The one that has been voting in my favor for twelve years.""
Nia felt the last piece of the puzzle slide into place.
Vanessa hadn't simply stolen a design.
She had taken control of an entire institution.
And she had spent years ensuring that nobody could challenge her.
Then Margaret quietly opened the final pocket of her envelope.
"I wouldn't be so confident, Vanessa.""
She placed a small card on the table.
It was a board membership record.
Six names were printed on it.
Five were familiar.
The sixth made Vanessa's face turn white.
*JONATHAN HAYES — PERMANENT VOTING MEMBER.*
Brianna stared.
"My father is still on the board?""
Margaret nodded.
"His seat was never legally transferred.""
Richard looked up sharply.
"Then who has been casting his votes?""
May you like
Margaret met Vanessa's eyes.
"That's exactly what I came here to investigate.""
