Chapter 1: The Girl Who Stole the Spotlight

“This design deserves first place!””

Brianna Hayes lifted her chin beneath the glittering chandeliers, smiling as hundreds of guests applauded. Her ivory haute couture ball gown shimmered beneath the runway lights, every inch covered in hand-set crystals and delicate pearls. It was the kind of dress that belonged on the cover of Vogue, not merely in a student fashion competition.

And Brianna knew it.

From the front row, her mother, Vanessa Hayes, rose to her feet and applauded louder than anyone.

“That’s my daughter!”” Vanessa called, her diamond bracelets flashing as she waved.

Brianna blew her a kiss.

Neither woman noticed the eighteen-year-old girl standing behind the black backstage curtains, gripping a crumpled sketchbook so tightly that its edges bent beneath her fingers.

Her name was Nia Carter.

And the dress Brianna was wearing had once belonged to her.

Not the physical gown.

The idea. The sketches. The construction notes.

The original pattern. Every detail that had taken Nia nearly eleven months to perfect.

Every detail she had believed would change her life.

Until someone stole it.

The competition was called the International Young Designers Scholarship Gala, an exclusive event held inside the magnificent Sterling Grand Ballroom in Manhattan. Its prize included a full scholarship to the prestigious Beaumont Institute of Fashion, a $100,000 development grant, and an apprenticeship with one of Europe's leading couture houses.

For Nia, winning meant more than money.

It meant getting out of the tiny apartment she shared with her grandmother. It meant proving that the girl who had spent years sewing dresses from discarded curtains and thrift-store fabric could stand beside the world's finest designers.

Most importantly, it meant honoring the one person who had taught her how to create something beautiful from nothing.

Her father.

Nia glanced down at the silver ring hanging from a chain around her neck.

It was the only thing he had left her.

Her father, Daniel Carter, had died when she was eight. Vanessa Hayes had been one of the last people to visit him in the hospital.

Nia remembered that day.

She remembered Vanessa's expensive perfume, the sound of her heels against the hospital floor, and the way her father had suddenly stopped smiling when Vanessa entered the room.

But she had been too young to understand why.

Now, ten years later, she was beginning to wonder whether she had ever known the truth about her family.

"Nia?""

A gentle voice pulled her from her thoughts.

Her grandmother, Evelyn Carter, stood beside her in a simple navy-blue dress. At sixty-eight, Evelyn had silver hair, tired eyes, and hands permanently marked by decades of sewing.

"Baby, are you all right?""

Nia quickly wiped her cheeks.

"I'm fine, Grandma.""

Evelyn looked toward the runway.

"No, you're not. I've watched you work on that collection every night. I know what it means to you.""

Nia swallowed.

"She took it, Grandma. She took everything.""

Evelyn's expression tightened.

"Then why are you still standing here?""

Nia looked at her.

"What?""

"Your father didn't raise a girl who gives up because someone with money decided she could take whatever she wanted.""

Nia glanced at the black garment bag hanging from a nearby clothing rack.

Inside was her final creation.

A black crystal gown with enormous luminous blue butterfly wings.

It was unlike anything the competition had ever seen.

The gown was fitted through the waist, with thousands of black crystals arranged in patterns resembling the delicate veins of butterfly wings. The skirt flowed outward in layers of translucent midnight fabric.

Behind the shoulders, two enormous wings extended from a concealed mechanical structure.

They were covered in hundreds of individually illuminated blue elements, each one glowing like a tiny star.

When activated, the wings would unfold slowly, creating the illusion of a giant butterfly emerging from darkness.

Nia had spent eleven months designing it.

She had also spent the last three nights rebuilding it after discovering that her original design files had disappeared from her laptop.

"Grandma," Nia whispered, "what if they don't believe me?""

Evelyn touched her cheek.

"Then make them look.""

Across the ballroom, Brianna had finished her runway presentation.

She stood beneath a massive LED screen displaying her name and the title of her design.

*THE ETERNAL BLOOM — BY BRIANNA HAYES.*

The audience applauded.

Vanessa leaned toward a wealthy couple seated beside her.

"My daughter has always had an extraordinary eye," she said.

"Fashion is practically in her blood.""

The woman smiled.

"She must have worked incredibly hard.""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Talent makes everything easier.""

Backstage, Nia heard the announcement.

"Next, our finalists will present their original couture collections before the judging panel.""

A stage assistant approached her.

"Miss Carter? You're next.""

Nia nodded.

The assistant glanced at the garment bag.

"That's your entry?""

"Yes.""

"Interesting. We were told your submission was withdrawn.""

Nia's stomach tightened.

"Who told you that?""

The assistant checked his clipboard.

"Mrs. Hayes's office. They said there had been a registration issue.""

Nia stared at him.

"I never withdrew.""

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

"Well, you're on the running order now. Just be ready.""

He hurried away.

Nia slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"She tried to remove me.""

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"Then she knows you're dangerous.""

Before Nia could answer, another voice interrupted.

"Still carrying that ridiculous sketchbook?""

Brianna stood at the backstage entrance, now wearing a white silk robe over her gown. Two assistants followed her, carrying garment bags and makeup cases.

She looked Nia up and down.

"Honestly, I thought you'd have given up by now.""

Nia said nothing.

Brianna glanced at the black garment bag.

"Please tell me that's not what you're planning to wear.""

"It's my design.""

Brianna laughed.

"Your design? You mean that little butterfly thing?""

Nia stepped closer.

"You know exactly what it is.""

Brianna's smile sharpened.

"Careful, Nia. Accusing someone of stealing is a serious thing.""

"You copied my sketches.""

"I've never seen your sketches.""

"Then explain the pearl arrangement on your bodice. Explain the hidden stitching beneath the waistline. Explain the crescent pattern inside the train.""

Brianna's expression flickered.

Only for a second.

Then she laughed again.

"Maybe you should spend less time drawing and more time learning how the industry works.""

Vanessa appeared behind her daughter.

"Brianna, darling, they're waiting for you.""

Then she noticed Nia.

Her smile disappeared.

"Why is she still here?""

Nia looked directly at her.

"Because I earned my place.""

Vanessa stepped closer, lowering her voice.

"Listen carefully, young lady. This is not a neighborhood sewing contest. Important people are watching tonight. You should be grateful you were even invited.""

Evelyn moved between them.

"She doesn't need your permission to compete.""

Vanessa looked at Evelyn with open disdain.

"Still pretending you're doing something important with that old sewing machine?""

Evelyn's face went pale.

Nia felt something snap inside her.

"Don't talk about my grandmother.""

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Then don't make a scene.""

A stage manager called Brianna's name.

Vanessa straightened immediately.

"Come along, sweetheart. You have a scholarship to win.""

Brianna gave Nia one last smile.

"Try not to embarrass yourself.""

Then she disappeared into the ballroom.

Nia watched the curtain sway behind her.

Her hands were shaking.

Evelyn squeezed them.

"Remember what your father used to say?""

Nia nodded.

"Never let someone else's shadow convince you that your light doesn't belong.""

"That's right.""

The announcer's voice echoed through the ballroom.

"And now, please welcome our final contestant, representing the independent student category...""

Nia took a breath.

The stage lights dimmed.

The ballroom fell silent.

She reached into the garment bag and removed the black gown.

Then she looked at her grandmother.

"Let's show them.""

And as Nia stepped toward the runway, the silver ring around her neck caught the light.

For the first time that evening, Evelyn looked frightened.

Because she recognized the tiny symbol engraved inside it.

May you like

The same symbol she had seen on the original design documents Daniel Carter had hidden before he died.

And she suddenly realized that Vanessa Hayes had no idea what Nia was about to reveal.
