Chapter 7: The Baby in the Photograph

Nia stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Daniel Carter stood outside a hospital room, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pale blue blanket. Evelyn stood beside him, one hand resting on his shoulder.
The date printed in the corner was three years after Nia's birth.
"Who is that baby?"" Nia whispered.
Evelyn couldn't meet her eyes.
"His name was Samuel.""
Nia looked up.
"Samuel who?""
"Samuel Carter.""
Nia shook her head.
"My father never told me I had a brother.""
"He wasn't your brother by blood.""
"Then who was he?""
Evelyn lowered herself into the nearest chair.
"He was the son of your mother, Amara.""
Nia's fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Amara had another baby?""
Evelyn nodded.
"After you were born, Amara discovered that she had a serious heart condition. The doctors warned her that another pregnancy would be dangerous. She wanted another child anyway. She said she wanted you to grow up with someone who would always understand where you came from.""
Nia looked down at the photograph.
"Was he alive?""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"For eleven days.""
The room fell silent.
Nia slowly sat down.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Because Daniel couldn't bear to talk about it. After Samuel died, he became a different man. He stopped designing for almost a year.""
Richard Vale moved closer.
"That photograph was taken at St. Vincent's Hospital. I remember the day.""
Nia looked at him.
"You were there?""
Richard nodded.
"Your father called me. He wanted someone to witness the birth registration because he feared there would be another dispute over the family's documents.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Another dispute? You make it sound as though Daniel was some innocent victim.""
Richard turned toward her.
"He was.""
"You weren't there when Amara was sick. You weren't there when Daniel couldn't pay the hospital bills. You weren't there when he begged me to help him.""
"Because you had already taken control of his foundation.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"I gave him money.""
"You gave him loans secured against his own designs.""
"I gave him opportunities.""
"You made him sign documents while he was ill.""
Nia looked between them.
"Stop.""
Both adults fell silent.
She turned toward Evelyn.
"Grandma, I need you to tell me everything. No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.""
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"When Samuel died, Daniel was devastated. He wanted to create a permanent memorial collection in his son's name. That's where the blue butterfly designs began.""
Nia looked at her gown.
"The Monarch Collection.""
"Yes. The butterfly was Amara's favorite symbol. She believed butterflies represented the possibility of becoming something new, even after losing everything.""
Nia touched the luminous blue wing mechanism attached to her dress.
"That's why Dad taught me to draw them.""
Evelyn nodded.
"He wanted you to carry the idea forward.""
Nia looked at the photograph again.
"And you signed the transfer document?""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel asked me to.""
Nia stared.
"Why would he ask you to give away his work?""
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
"He didn't give it away. He transferred it into a protective trust. The document Vanessa presented tonight was only the administrative transfer. It wasn't the final ownership agreement.""
Richard leaned forward.
"That distinction is important.""
Evelyn continued.
"Daniel discovered that Vanessa had been moving money out of the foundation. He knew she would try to claim the collection after he died. He wanted to make sure the designs would eventually belong to you.""
Nia frowned.
"Then why does the document say you transferred everything?""
"Because I became the temporary custodian. I signed as the person responsible for protecting the collection until you turned eighteen.""
"But Vanessa controlled it.""
"She was supposed to manage the business. I was supposed to safeguard the ownership records.""
Nia looked at the old photograph.
"Then why did you let her take everything?""
Evelyn's face crumpled.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Vanessa?""
"Of what she could do to you.""
Nia stood.
"You let me grow up believing we couldn't afford groceries while she made millions from my father's work.""
"I know.""
"You watched me repair my own shoes.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
"You watched me work nights sewing dresses for strangers so I could afford fabric.""
Evelyn began crying.
"I know.""
Nia turned away.
Her chest hurt.
For eighteen years, Evelyn had been the one person she trusted without question.
Now even that trust felt fractured.
Richard quietly placed another document on the table.
"There's something else in the archive.""
Nia wiped her cheeks.
"What?""
"The original trust agreement includes a clause that becomes active when both beneficiaries turn eighteen.""
Brianna looked up.
"Both beneficiaries?""
Richard nodded.
"You and Brianna.""
Brianna's face tightened.
"What does that mean?""
"It means the foundation cannot be permanently transferred or dissolved without both of your signatures.""
Vanessa suddenly stopped moving.
Nia noticed.
"What?""
Richard looked at her.
"The Monarch Foundation was established to protect the original Carter designs and fund scholarships. Your father wanted it to survive beyond his lifetime.""
Nia looked at Brianna.
"So she has a say in what happens to it?""
"Yes.""
Brianna looked stunned.
"I don't want anything that belongs to her.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Don't be foolish.""
Brianna faced her mother.
"You lied to me about my father. You lied about the foundation. You let me wear a dress that belonged to Nia.""
"I gave you a future!""
"You gave me stolen work!""
Vanessa slapped the table.
"I gave you everything!""
Brianna's voice broke.
"You gave me a life built on someone else's pain.""
Vanessa stepped toward her.
"Don't forget who raised you.""
Brianna shook her head.
"I haven't forgotten. That's the problem.""
Richard opened the blue metal box again.
Beneath the photograph was a small sealed packet.
He removed it carefully.
"Daniel left instructions that this packet should only be opened after both girls reached adulthood.""
Nia looked at Brianna.
"Open it.""
Richard broke the seal.
Inside were two letters.
One bore Nia's name.
The other bore Brianna's.
Nia opened hers first.
My dearest Nia,
If you are reading this, you have reached the age when I can finally tell you what I could not explain when you were little.
You are the daughter of Daniel Carter and Amara Carter. You are the rightful beneficiary of the original Monarch Collection.
But ownership is not the greatest inheritance I can give you.
Your greatest inheritance is the ability to create something that no one can take from you.
Nia pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she opened the second page.
There is one person you must not blame for the choices of the adults around her. Her name is Brianna.
Nia glanced at the other girl.
Brianna was reading her own letter.
Her hands trembled.
"What does yours say?"" Nia asked.
Brianna couldn't speak.
She handed it to Richard.
He read aloud.
Dear Brianna,
You were never responsible for the circumstances of your birth. You were loved by people who did not always know how to love honestly.
Your biological father, Marcus Vale, believed every child deserved the chance to become something greater than the mistakes of the previous generation.
He asked me to make sure you would never be punished for what Vanessa and the adults around us did.
But there is one truth you must understand.
The original Monarch Collection was never intended to make our families rich. It was created to give young artists a chance to build lives of their own.
If you and Nia ever stand together, protect that purpose.
Brianna covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked toward Richard.
"Enough.""
Richard continued.
There is a final document hidden inside the original design portfolio. It contains the reason I trusted Evelyn with my daughter's future.
Do not open it unless the foundation's ownership is challenged.
Nia looked up.
"The portfolio?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Your father's original portfolio is still in my apartment.""
Richard stood.
"Then we need to retrieve it.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
"You're all wasting your time.""
Richard narrowed his eyes.
"Why?""
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
She removed a small silver USB drive.
"Because the original portfolio was copied years ago.""
She placed the drive on the table.
"And I have the recording that proves Daniel never intended Nia to inherit anything.""
Nia stared at it.
May you like
Vanessa smiled.
"Perhaps it's time everyone heard what your father really said.""
