Chapter 2: The Butterfly in the Darkness

The ballroom lights went completely black.
A low orchestral note vibrated through the floor.
The audience shifted in their seats.
At the judges' table, fashion editor Elise Monroe glanced at the program.
"Who is this final contestant?"" she whispered.
The event director checked his tablet.
"Nia Carter. Independent scholarship entry.""
Elise frowned.
"Why haven't I seen her portfolio?""
"Apparently, there was a registration problem.""
Elise looked up.
"An eighteen-year-old finalist with a registration problem? That's convenient.""
Before the director could answer, a single blue light appeared at the end of the runway.
Then another.
Then another.
The lights formed a glowing path through the darkness.
A soft mechanical sound followed.
And Nia Carter stepped into view.
The audience gasped.
Her black crystal gown caught the blue light, scattering tiny reflections across the floor. The fitted bodice shimmered with thousands of dark stones, while the flowing skirt moved like smoke around her ankles.
But it was the wings that stopped everyone from breathing.
Two enormous blue butterfly wings unfolded behind her.
Their translucent surfaces glowed with electric-blue patterns, revealing delicate lines of light that resembled the veins of a living butterfly.
The wings moved gently as Nia walked.
Not like a costume.
Like something alive.
A woman in the second row covered her mouth.
"Oh, my God.""
A photographer immediately stood up.
"Get the wings! Get the whole thing!""
The audience began whispering.
At the front row, Brianna's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.
It shattered against the floor.
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Brianna?""
Brianna didn't answer.
Her eyes were fixed on the runway.
She recognized the design.
Not just the butterfly wings.
The hidden shoulder mechanism. The asymmetrical crystal placement. The black silk layered beneath the translucent outer skirt.
It was all there.
The same design she had spent months claiming as her own.
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's wrist.
"Don't move.""
Brianna stared at her.
"Mom...""
"Don't.""
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa's fingers tightened.
"Keep your face pleasant.""
Onstage, Nia reached the center of the runway.
The music softened.
She slowly raised her arms.
The wings expanded to their full width, bathing the ballroom in blue light.
The audience erupted.
People stood.
Cameras flashed.
Even the judges leaned forward.
Elise Monroe rose from her chair.
"Stop the music.""
The orchestra fell silent.
Elise walked toward the runway.
"Young lady, what is your name?""
"Nia Carter.""
"And this design?""
Nia held her gaze.
"Midnight Monarch. Original concept, pattern, and construction by me.""
Elise studied the gown.
"How long did it take you to create this?""
"Eleven months.""
"Eleven months?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
Elise circled her slowly.
"These wings are mechanically supported, but the fabric remains flexible. How did you solve the tension problem at the shoulder joints?""
Nia explained the concealed support system, the lightweight carbon framework, and the layered fabric that allowed the wings to move without pulling the bodice out of shape.
Elise listened carefully.
Then she looked toward the judges' table.
"Has anyone seen this construction before?""
A male judge, fashion designer Marcus Bell, shook his head.
"Not in this configuration.""
Another judge leaned forward.
"The embroidery pattern is extraordinary.""
Nia nodded.
"Thank you.""
Elise examined the neckline.
"Who taught you to work with this kind of detailing?""
"My father.""
"Was he a designer?""
Nia hesitated.
"He was a pattern maker. He worked in couture before I was born.""
Elise's expression changed.
"What's his name?""
"Daniel Carter.""
The name seemed to strike something in her.
Elise stopped moving.
"Daniel Carter?""
Nia nodded.
"Yes.""
Elise turned toward the event director.
"Bring me the original submission records.""
The director blinked.
"Excuse me?""
"The original records. Now.""
Vanessa rose from her seat.
"Elise, perhaps we should continue the judging process without turning this into an interrogation.""
Elise didn't look at her.
"Mrs. Hayes, I'll decide how the judging process proceeds.""
Vanessa sat down slowly.
Brianna leaned toward her mother.
"Do something.""
Vanessa whispered through clenched teeth.
"Not here.""
At the center of the runway, Nia remained still.
Elise turned back to her.
"Miss Carter, did you submit this design independently?""
"Yes.""
"Did anyone assist you?""
"My grandmother helped me sew some of the early prototypes. But the concept, drawings, pattern, and technical construction are mine.""
Elise nodded.
"Do you have the original sketches?""
Nia reached beneath her arm and pulled out a worn black portfolio.
The corners were frayed. A strip of silver tape held the spine together.
"I brought them.""
Elise accepted the portfolio.
She opened it.
Inside were dozens of hand-drawn pages, technical measurements, fabric samples, and detailed construction diagrams.
Some pages were dated almost a year earlier.
Elise turned one page.
Then another.
Her eyes narrowed.
"These dates...""
Nia swallowed.
"I made the first sketches last December.""
Elise looked at the gown.
Then at the sketches.
Then at Brianna.
"Miss Hayes.""
Brianna stiffened.
"Yes?""
"Would you please come forward?""
Vanessa stood immediately.
"There's no reason to involve Brianna.""
Elise finally looked at her.
"Actually, Mrs. Hayes, I believe there is.""
The ballroom grew quiet.
Brianna walked toward the runway, holding the front of her robe.
Elise placed Nia's sketchbook beside a photograph of Brianna's ivory gown on the large display screen.
The two images appeared side by side.
At first, the audience saw only similarities.
Then Elise pointed to the details.
"The crescent-shaped pearl arrangement on the bodice.""
She touched the screen.
"Here.""
Then she indicated Nia's sketch.
"Identical.""
She moved to the next detail.
"The hidden diagonal seam beneath the waistline. The double-layered train. The asymmetrical crystal placement.""
Marcus Bell leaned forward.
"Those are not generic design choices.""
Another judge nodded.
"Especially the internal construction.""
Brianna shook her head.
"That's ridiculous. I designed my dress.""
Nia stared at her.
"Then why does my sketch have the same mistakes your dress has?""
Brianna froze.
Elise turned.
"Explain.""
Nia pointed to a small section beneath the bodice.
"On my first prototype, I placed the inner support seam too close to the left hip. It created a small fold whenever the wearer moved. I corrected it in the next version.""
She pointed to Brianna's gown on the screen.
"But hers still has the original fold.""
The camera zoomed in.
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
Brianna's face flushed.
"That's a coincidence.""
Nia shook her head.
"No. It's a mistake I made before I knew how to fix it.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is becoming absurd. My daughter has spent months preparing for this competition. She has professional mentors and documented design work.""
"Then show us," Elise replied.
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Elise turned toward the event director.
"Where are the registration documents?""
The director hurried over with a thick folder.
"Here, ma'am.""
Elise opened it.
She scanned the pages.
Then she stopped.
A small line appeared between her eyebrows.
"What is this?""
The director leaned closer.
"Which document?""
"This original authorization.""
She lifted a sheet of paper.
Nia stepped forward.
"What's wrong?""
Elise looked at her.
"Your father's name appears on the original technical registration.""
Nia blinked.
"My father's?""
Elise nodded.
"But there's something else.""
She examined the signature at the bottom of the page.
Then she looked toward Vanessa and Brianna.
"Who submitted the authorization?""
The director checked the record.
"Vanessa Hayes.""
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Vanessa's face turned white.
"That's a clerical error.""
Elise held up the document.
"Then perhaps you can explain why your signature is attached to a submission bearing Daniel Carter's authorization.""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Nia stared at the paper.
She recognized her father's handwriting immediately.
The long curve of the D.
The unusual way he crossed the final letter.
She had seen it on birthday cards, old letters, and the labels inside his sewing boxes.
But she had never seen this document before.
"That's my father's signature," Nia whispered.
Elise nodded.
"Yes.""
Then she turned another page.
Her expression became unreadable.
"Miss Carter, I need you to look at something.""
Nia stepped closer.
Elise placed two documents side by side.
One was an old design registration.
The other was the competition's current entry authorization.
The signatures were identical.
But beneath the signature, on the older document, was a line Nia had never seen before.
*Original creator and intellectual rights holder: Daniel Carter.*
Nia's breath caught.
"Why would my father have signed something for my design?""
Elise looked at her carefully.
"That's precisely what I intend to find out.""
Vanessa suddenly reached for the documents.
"Give me that.""
Elise pulled them away.
"Don't touch official evidence.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
Elise's eyes hardened.
"I know enough to recognize a serious problem.""
Brianna stepped backward.
"Mom, what is she talking about?""
Vanessa turned toward her daughter.
"Be quiet.""
"But you said Dad—"
Vanessa grabbed Brianna's arm.
"Not one more word.""
The entire ballroom heard it.
And Nia noticed something.
Brianna wasn't just frightened of losing the scholarship.
She looked frightened of her mother.
Elise returned to the judges' table, carrying the documents.
"Until we verify these records, the competition results will be suspended.""
The audience erupted into overlapping questions.
Nia stood beneath her glowing wings, unable to move.
Her father's name was on the paperwork.
May you like
But why?
And why had Vanessa spent so many years making sure Nia never saw it?
