Chapter 9: The Last Memory
For ten years, everyone had been protecting me from the truth.
But standing in that room, surrounded by the people who had shaped my entire life, I realized something terrifying.
The truth was never missing.
It was being passed around like a weapon.
My mother.
Adrian.
Ethan.
Everyone had held a piece of my story.
Everyone except me.
I looked at Ethan.
“You expect me to believe you?””
His eyes were different now.
No arrogance.
No cruelty.
Just exhaustion.
“I know how it sounds.””
“You accused Adrian. Then you accused my mother. Now you’re telling me someone else did it?””
“I’m telling you that I spent ten years believing the wrong person was responsible.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Ethan, stop.””
His face hardened.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it carried years of anger.
“I protected your secret long enough.””
My mother looked away.
That reaction scared me more than anything.
Because she didn’t deny it.
I turned toward her.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Lillian…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I’m done being protected.””
The room became silent.
“I want the truth. All of it.””
My mother sat down slowly.
Then she said the words I had been waiting my entire life to hear.
“The night your family died was not an accident.””
I already knew that.
But then she continued.
“It was a plan.””
My chest tightened.
“Whose plan?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“Mine.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“You?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked away.
Even he seemed unable to hear it again.
I stepped back.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was trying to stop something worse.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone hurts me and calls it protection.””
She wiped her tears.
“I made a deal.””
“With who?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“The people who created the memory procedure.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Your mother was working with them?””
My mother looked at him.
“I was infiltrating them.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s not what the evidence showed.””
“Because the evidence was created to make me look guilty.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Then explain why you ordered the fire.””
My mother looked at him.
“I didn’t.””
“Your signature was on the document.””
“I know.””
“Your security code opened the building.””
“I know.””
“Your message told everyone to leave before the fire started.””
Her voice became softer.
“Because I knew someone was coming.””
I looked between them.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian walked toward the table.
He opened his laptop.
“I found something.””
The room turned toward him.
“While everyone was chasing old evidence, I checked the original files.””
He looked at my mother.
“You were right.””
She looked surprised.
“What?””
“The documents were altered.””
Ethan frowned.
“How?””
Adrian turned the screen around.
“There was another user accessing the system.””
A name appeared.
A name that made everyone freeze.
*Victor Kane.*
Adrian’s father.
My stomach dropped.
“Your father?””
Adrian nodded.
“My father wasn’t just involved.””
His voice became hollow.
“He was the person controlling everything.””
For years, Adrian had carried guilt that wasn’t his.
For years, Ethan had carried anger built on lies.
For years, my mother had lived like a ghost because she knew the truth would destroy all of us.
But there was still one question.
“Why me?””
Everyone looked at me.
I touched the scar beneath my hair.
“The procedure.””
Adrian nodded.
“Your memories contained something your father recorded.””
“What?””
“A location.””
I stared.
“A location?””
“Your father knew Victor Kane would come after him. So he hid the final evidence somewhere no one would search.””
My mother reached for my hand.
“Inside your memories.””
I felt cold.
“You’re saying my father hid information inside my own mind?””
“Yes.””
“But I don’t remember.””
Adrian looked at me.
“That’s why the procedure was created.””
A sudden pain hit my head.
The room blurred.
A flash.
A hallway.
A door.
A little girl hiding behind a wall.
I grabbed the table.
“Lillian?””
I heard my mother’s voice.
But I wasn’t in the room anymore.
I was eight years old again.
I was watching.
Listening.
A man was shouting.
My father.
“You’re my brother. How could you do this?””
Another voice answered.
Victor Kane.
“You should have sold the company when I asked.””
My breath stopped.
My father wasn’t talking to Ethan.
He was talking to Victor.
My younger self watched as Victor placed something on the table.
A file.
A contract.
Then he noticed me.
The memory changed.
Victor looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Come here, little one.””
I screamed.
The present returned.
I collapsed into Adrian’s arms.
Everyone was shouting.
But I only heard one thing.
A whisper from the memory.
Victor Kane’s voice.
“You’re the only witness.””
I opened my eyes.
Adrian was holding me.
“What did you see?””
I looked at him.
And finally understood.
The reason everyone had been protecting me.
The reason people wanted me dead.
The reason my memories had been stolen.
I whispered:
“I saw who killed my father.””
Adrian held his breath.
“Who?””
I looked at the photograph of Victor Kane on the screen.
May you like
And said:
“Your father.””
