Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Perfect Lie
The truth didn’t arrive like lightning.
It arrived slowly.
Like a crack spreading through glass.
By morning, everything I believed about myself had broken.
My name.
My childhood.
My memories.
Even the reason I trusted certain people.
All of it was questionable.
I stayed at my mother’s house while Adrian disappeared.
I told myself I didn’t care.
But every time the door opened, I looked up.
Every time my phone rang, I hoped it was him.
That made me hate myself.
Because even after everything…
I still believed there was something good inside him.
My mother found me staring at the ocean.
“You love him.””
I didn’t turn around.
“I don’t know him.””
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I know the version he wanted me to know.””
She sat beside me.
“Sometimes people make terrible choices trying to protect someone.””
“And sometimes people destroy your life because they think they know better.””
She didn’t argue.
Because she knew I was right.
That afternoon, Adrian returned.
Alone.
No security.
No excuses.
Just the same man who once stepped between me and two killers.
“I found something.””
I didn’t move.
“Why should I believe you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
He placed a file on the table.
“I need you to decide based on the evidence.””
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Medical reports.
And one video file.
“What is this?””
“Your original memory procedure.””
I looked at him.
“You recorded it?””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“Your father did.””
We watched.
The screen showed a young version of me.
A frightened little girl.
My biological father stood beside her.
And beside him…
Was Adrian.
Younger.
Terrified.
My father spoke.
“Lillian, this is Adrian. He is going to help us.””
My younger self looked at him.
“Are you my protector?””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“I promise.””
The video changed.
Another scene.
My father speaking privately with Adrian.
“If anything happens, she cannot remember.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because the person who betrayed us knows she saw everything.””
“Who?””
My father looked directly at the camera.
And said a name.
A name that made my blood run cold.
“Ethan.””
The video stopped.
I stared.
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I didn’t erase your memories to hide the truth.””
“Then why?””
“Because Ethan had access to the procedure.””
I shook my head.
“You’re saying my brother tried to manipulate me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he tell me about you?””
“Because he needed me to look guilty.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Ethan wasn’t revealing secrets.
He was controlling the story.
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Where is he now?””
Adrian looked toward the window.
“He knows we found the truth.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Then came a knock.
Three slow knocks.
My mother went pale.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Who is it?””
She whispered:
“The person who started everything.””
The door opened before anyone touched it.
Ethan stood there.
But this time, he wasn’t smiling.
He looked afraid.
“Lillian.””
Adrian moved in front of me.
Ethan raised his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt her.””
“Then why are you here?”” Adrian asked.
Ethan looked at me.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t looking at me like an enemy.
He looked at me like someone begging for help.
“Because I finally found out who really killed our family.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Ethan’s face turned pale.
And the name he whispered…
May you like
Was one I never expected.
“Your mother.””
