Chapter 1: The Woman in the Mirror

“Do you know what happens when you cut open a secret that has been buried for ten years?””

I didn’t understand why Adrian Kane asked me that question while I was sitting in a $90,000 beauty salon surrounded by mirrors, diamonds, and women who had never known what it felt like to disappear.

I thought I was there to become someone new.

I was wrong.

I was there because someone finally discovered who I had been all along.

My name is Clara Voss.

At least, that was the name written on my driver’s license, my bank cards, and every piece of paperwork I owned. It was the name I had used since the night I woke up in a hospital twelve years ago with no memories, no family, and a scar hidden beneath my hairline.

The doctors told me I was lucky.

They said I survived a car accident that should have killed me.

They said the damage to my brain caused memory loss.

They said I had no reason to believe I was anyone other than Clara Voss.

But they never explained why someone had tried to kill me before the accident.

And they never explained why I kept waking up from the same nightmare.

A burning house.

A little girl screaming.

A woman’s voice saying, “Protect her. No matter what happens, protect her.””

For years, I convinced myself it was just trauma.

Until the night Adrian Kane saved my life.

It happened outside a charity event in Manhattan.

I was leaving alone when two men followed me into the parking garage. At first, I thought they were drunk guests.

Then one of them said my name.

Not Clara.

Something else.

A name I didn’t recognize.

“Lillian,” the man whispered.

“You should have stayed dead.””

I froze.

The second man grabbed my arm.

“Ten years is a long time to hide,” he said.

I fought, but I was never trained for violence. I was just a woman who spent her life trying to survive.

Then a voice cut through the darkness.

“Let her go.””

Adrian Kane stepped out from between the cars.

The billionaire security investor.

The man newspapers called untouchable.

He looked calm, but his eyes were cold enough to make both men step back.

One of them laughed.

“You don’t know what you’re protecting.””

Adrian moved closer.

“I know exactly who I’m protecting.””

The fight lasted less than a minute.

When it was over, both men were gone.

Adrian stood beside me, staring at the scar hidden beneath my hair.

Not my face.

Not my injuries.

My scar.

That scared me more than anything.

“How do you know about this?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he took off his jacket and placed it over my shoulders.

“Because I’ve been looking for you for ten years.””

I remember laughing.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“No one has been looking for me,” I said.

“I don’t have anyone.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

A sadness crossed his face.

“You really don’t remember.””

“Remember what?””

He looked toward the dark garage.

Then back at me.

“Your real name.””

I wanted to walk away.

I wanted to tell him he was insane.

But three days later, he sent me a photograph.

It was an old family portrait.

A wealthy couple stood in front of a mansion with a little girl between them.

The girl was around eight years old.

She had the same eyes as me.

The same scar on her forehead.

On the back of the photograph was one sentence:

*The Vale family, before they disappeared.*

The Vale family.

One of America’s richest families.

A dynasty worth billions.

A family that vanished after a mysterious fire ten years ago.

Everyone believed they died.

Everyone except Adrian.

Because according to him…

I was the missing Vale daughter.

And someone had spent a decade making sure I never found out.

The next morning, Adrian picked me up and drove me to his private office.

He placed a file on the table.

Inside were newspaper articles, medical records, photographs, and one document that made my hands shake.

A birth certificate.

The name on it wasn’t Clara Voss.

It was:

*Lillian Eleanor Vale.*

I looked at Adrian.

“Why did you hide this from me?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I needed proof before I destroyed your life.””

“Destroyed my life?””

He looked at the locked door behind me.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Clara… the people who killed your family are still alive.””

My heart stopped.

“And they know you’re alive.””

Adrian reached for another document.

A photograph fell onto the desk.

It showed a man standing outside my old apartment.

Watching.

Waiting.

I recognized him instantly.

Because I had seen him before.

The night my life changed.

The night someone tried to erase me.

Adrian looked at my terrified face.

“Tell me you know who that is.””

I swallowed.

Because the truth was already crawling back through the cracks in my memory.

May you like

And the man in the photograph…

Was the person who had pushed me into the fire.
