Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Disappearance

I spent the next six hours believing Adrian Kane was dead.

Maybe that would have been easier.

Because a dead man couldn’t betray me.

A dead man couldn’t explain why he had been lying.

A dead man couldn’t destroy the last piece of trust I had left.

But Adrian wasn’t dead.

He was waiting for me.

In an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

I found him standing beside a broken window, blood running down his arm.

“You followed me?”” he asked.

I laughed.

“You kidnapped me emotionally for ten years. I think I deserve some answers.””

He didn’t argue.

That made me angrier.

“Tell me everything.””

Adrian looked older than he had yesterday.

Like carrying the truth had aged him.

“I didn’t save you that night.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I failed you.””

The words were quiet.

But they cut deep.

He walked toward an old table.

On it was the black box from my father’s photograph.

The box I thought was lost.

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father gave it to me before he died.””

I stared at him.

“What’s inside?””

Adrian opened the box.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it before I even touched it.

My hands shook.

The letter said:

*If you are reading this, then they failed to erase her.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Adrian watched as tears filled my eyes.

“Your father knew someone would try to make you disappear.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed me.

“Adrian.””

He closed his eyes.

“The person behind everything…”

The warehouse became silent.

“…was someone your family trusted.””

“Who?””

He handed me the flash drive.

“Watch.””

The video loaded.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

“Lillian,” he said.

My knees nearly collapsed.

A father’s voice I hadn’t heard in ten years.

“If you’re seeing this, then I failed to protect you.””

I covered my mouth.

The video continued.

“The person who betrayed us is not an enemy outside the family.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“It is someone who shares our blood.””

The screen froze.

Adrian looked at me.

“I tried to tell you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because there was only one person left.

One person who disappeared the night of the fire.

One person everyone believed had died.

My older brother.

Ethan Vale.

My voice trembled.

“You’re saying my brother did this?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

A sound came from behind us.

A slow clap.

A familiar voice.

“After ten years, you finally figured it out.””

I turned.

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Older.

Different.

But impossible to mistake.

The memories came rushing back.

The garden.

The bicycle.

The promise.

My brother’s voice.

“I’ll always protect you, Lily.””

Ethan smiled.

But there was no warmth in it.

“Hello, little sister.””

And behind him stood the man from the photograph.

The man who tried to kill me.

The man I thought had started the nightmare.

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“You kept her alive all this time.””

Then he looked at me.

“But you never told her the worst part.””

My heart pounded.

“What worst part?””

Ethan smiled.

“Adrian Kane wasn’t trying to find you.””

May you like

He stepped closer.

“He was trying to hide from what he did to you.””
