Chapter 9: The Last Secret
Dr. Samuel Carter stood at the bottom of the stairs as if he owned the room.
Detective Cole aimed his weapon.
“Don't move.””
Samuel raised both hands.
“Easy, Detective.””
“Get on your knees.””
Samuel smiled.
“You don't understand what you're dealing with.””
Cole's voice hardened.
“I understand enough.””
Dad stepped forward.
“You killed my wife.””
Samuel's smile disappeared.
“No.””
“You poisoned her.””
“No.””
“You took money from her trust.””
“Yes.””
Dad stared at him.
“Why?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Because your mother was going to destroy everything.””
“What everything?””
He looked around the basement.
“This.””
I stepped forward.
“What is this place?””
Samuel sighed.
“Your mother's insurance policy.””
I shook my head.
“She kept records because she knew someone was after her.””
“She kept records because she didn't trust anyone.””
“Not even Dad?””
“Especially not Marcus.””
Dad flinched.
Samuel continued.
“Lena knew she was going to die.””
“She was getting better.””
“Yes.””
“So someone made her sick.””
Samuel looked away.
“I administered the medication.””
My heart stopped.
Dad lunged toward him.
Cole blocked him.
“Marcus!””
Samuel didn't resist.
“I didn't know what it would do.””
“You're lying!””
“I was told it wouldn't kill her.””
“Who told you?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Your mother.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“She asked me to help her disappear.””
Nobody moved.
“She knew someone was watching her,” Samuel continued.
“She believed the only way to protect you was to make them believe she was dead.””
Dad whispered, “That's why she told me she was dying.””
Samuel nodded.
“She wanted you to believe it too.””
I felt like the floor had disappeared.
“So my mother planned her own death?””
“Not exactly.””
Samuel looked toward the files.
“The medication was supposed to make her appear critically ill. Then she would disappear.””
“What went wrong?””
“She was given too much.””
Dad stared at him.
“By you.””
“Yes.””
“And she died.””
Samuel lowered his head.
“Yes.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Did she suffer?””
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I turned away.
Then I noticed Detective Cole staring at the photograph Samuel carried.
“Where did you get that?””
Samuel looked at him.
“From Lena.””
Cole stepped closer.
“When?””
“The night she died.””
Dad's voice cracked.
“You said she was unconscious.””
“She wasn't.””
“What?””
Samuel looked at me.
“She woke up.””
My heart shattered.
“She was conscious when I entered the room.””
Dad stared at him.
“What did she say?””
Samuel's expression became haunted.
“She said, ‘Get Maya away from Marcus.’”
Dad froze.
“No.””
“She believed Marcus was compromised.””
“You're lying.””
“I thought she was wrong.””
“Then why did you help her?””
“Because Daniel convinced me.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel was alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Samuel hesitated.
“Dead.””
“Who killed him?””
“I don't know.””
Dad stepped closer.
“You've lied enough.””
Samuel looked at him.
“You think I'm the mastermind?””
“Aren't you?””
“No.””
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“She knows who is.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood at the bottom of the stairs.
She was crying.
I hadn't noticed she'd followed us down.
Dad stared at her.
“What does he mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't know.””
Samuel laughed bitterly.
“You knew more than anyone.””
“Stop.””
“You took the money.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“You signed the custody papers.””
“Because they threatened my boys!””
Dad's face changed.
“Who threatened them?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The same person who threatened Maya.””
“Name them.””
“I can't.””
“You can.””
She started sobbing.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.””
I looked at Dad.
He went completely still.
“My father?””
“Your grandfather,” Vanessa said.
“Marcus's father.””
Dad shook his head.
“He's dead.””
“He was supposed to be.””
Samuel stepped forward.
“He wasn't.””
The basement became silent.
Dad stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
“Your father faked his death.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Why?””
Samuel pointed to the files.
“Because Lena discovered what he had been doing with the trust.””
Dad's face was blank.
“My father was stealing from my mother?””
“Not stealing.””
Samuel shook his head.
“Building something.””
“What?””
“A network.””
“What kind of network?””
“People who could control estates after someone died. Doctors. Lawyers.
Guardians. Financial managers.””
My stomach turned.
“They target wealthy families?””
“Yes.””
“Why me?””
Samuel looked at the trust documents.
“Because your mother left you more than money.””
He opened a final folder.
Inside was a property deed.
Not for the Coral Gables house.
For dozens of properties.
All held under one company.
*Reeves Carter Holdings.*
I stared.
“What is this?””
“Your mother's real inheritance.””
Dad took the papers.
His hands shook.
“She owned all of this?””
“She inherited it from her father.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And my grandfather wanted it?””
“No,” Samuel said.
“He wanted control of it.””
Dad stared at the documents.
“How?””
“By making Maya legally dependent on someone he controlled.””
The custody document.
I understood.
“They wanted custody of me.””
“Yes.””
“So they could control my trust.””
Samuel nodded.
“And once you turned eighteen, the assets would become yours.””
Dad's eyes hardened.
“That explains the guardianship.””
“And the Miami ticket,” Samuel said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“They needed Maya out of the house.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who sent the messages knew she was about to inherit control.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why Miami?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Because the Coral Gables house contains the original ownership records.””
The basement suddenly felt colder.
My mother hadn't left me a treasure.
She had left me evidence.
Evidence that could destroy an entire network.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“You were helping them.””
She shook her head.
“I was trying to protect Tyler and Brandon.””
“You still helped them.””
“I know.””
“Who was giving you orders?””
Vanessa covered her face.
Then she slowly lowered her hands.
“I never saw him.””
Samuel laughed.
“I did.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Who?””
Samuel's expression changed.
“Your father's father.””
Dad's face went pale.
“Where is he?””
Samuel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small photograph.
A recent photograph.
It showed an elderly man sitting in a black SUV.
Behind him was the hospital where Daniel had been found.
On the back was an address.
Dad stared at it.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Old.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Marcus.””
Dad couldn't speak.
The voice continued.
“You've always been stubborn.””
Dad's hand began shaking.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I moved closer.
The voice laughed softly.
“Hello, Maya.””
My blood turned cold.
“How do you know my name?””
“I've known you since before you were born.””
Dad shouted into the phone.
“Where are you?””
“At the place where this started.””
“Tell me.””
“You already know.””
Dad looked at the photograph.
The hospital.
The caller continued.
“Come alone.””
“No.””
“Then Maya dies.””
I felt Dad's hand close around mine.
The line went dead.
Then another message arrived.
A location appeared.
I recognized it instantly.
The hospital where my mother had died.
And beneath the address was one final sentence:
*Bring the key. Come before midnight.*
Dad looked at me.
Detective Cole stepped forward.
“We're going together.””
But before anyone could move, Vanessa screamed.
She had found something inside the desk.
A hidden envelope.
She pulled it out.
My mother's handwriting was on the front.
But this time, it wasn't addressed to me.
It said:
*Marcus — open only when you finally learn who your father really is.*
Dad stared at it.
His hands trembled as he opened the envelope.
He read the first line.
Then dropped into the nearest chair.
I picked up the letter.
And the first sentence made my entire body go numb.
*Marcus, if you're reading this, then your father is already dead.*
I looked at Dad.
He was staring at the floor.
May you like
Then I noticed the date on the letter.
It had been written *six months after my grandfather's supposed death*.
