Chapter 8: The Hidden Basement
The police found Daniel's body less than two miles from the hospital where my mother died.
That should have made everything simpler.
It didn't.
Detective Cole sat across from us in the conference room, a folder open in front of him.
“Daniel was found in an abandoned storage building,” he said.
Dad leaned forward.
“When?””
“Early this morning.””
“Cause of death?””
“We're waiting on the medical examiner.””
I stared at the photograph.
“If that's really Daniel, then who was in the hospital?””
Cole looked at me.
“That is exactly what we're trying to determine.””
Vanessa's phone buzzed.
She didn't touch it.
Dad looked at her.
“Check it.””
“No.””
“Check it.””
She slowly picked it up.
The message was only three words.
*Too late. Leave.*
Cole saw it.
“Who's sending these?””
“We don't know.””
“Why is this person contacting you?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because they want Maya.””
Cole's expression hardened.
“Why?””
I pulled the brass key from my pocket.
“Because they think this opens something.””
He examined it.
“Where did you get this?””
“My mother.””
“What does B-17 mean?””
“We don't know.””
Cole looked at Jonathan.
“Coral Gables property?””
“Yes,” Jonathan said.
“Then we're going there.””
Dad immediately stood.
“No.””
Cole looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent those messages wants us there.””
“Exactly.””
“So it's a trap.””
“Probably.””
Dad shook his head.
“Then we don't walk into it.””
I stood.
“My mother left that key for me.””
“Maya—”
“She wanted me to find something.””
“I know.””
“Then I'm going.””
Dad stared at me.
“I won't let you.””
I walked toward him.
“You spent eight years deciding what I could handle.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I loved you.””
“I know.””
“Then please trust me.””
“I do trust you.””
I held up the key.
“But I need you to trust me too.””
He didn't answer.
Detective Cole finally said, “I'll arrange protection.””
Dad looked at him.
“Police protection?””
“Yes.””
“And if this is bigger than we think?””
Cole nodded.
“Then we find out before someone else gets hurt.””
Three hours later, we stood outside the Coral Gables house.
I hadn't seen it since I was nine.
The white walls were faded.
The garden had grown wild.
The windows were covered with dust.
I remembered running through the front yard while my mother laughed behind me.
Dad opened the front door.
The smell hit me first.
Old wood.
Dust.
And something faintly floral.
My mother's perfume.
I stopped.
Dad noticed.
“You okay?””
I nodded.
“She was here.””
He looked around.
“Yes.””
We walked through the hallway.
Every room felt frozen in time.
My mother's piano.
The blue sofa.
The photograph of our family.
Then I saw something strange.
A small scratch beneath the staircase.
I crouched.
There was a brass plate hidden under the wood trim.
*B-17.*
I looked at Dad.
“This is it.””
Detective Cole drew his flashlight.
“Everyone stay behind me.””
He pressed the plate.
Nothing happened.
I took out the key.
“Let me.””
Dad started to protest.
I inserted it.
The lock clicked.
A section of the wall moved.
A narrow staircase appeared.
Cold air rushed up.
Nobody spoke.
We descended.
The basement was much larger than the house above.
Concrete walls.
Metal shelves.
Boxes.
A desk.
And seventeen numbered doors.
I counted them.
One.
Two.
Three.
All the way to seventeen.
My hands shook.
I reached the final door.
There was another lock.
I used the key.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with files.
Hundreds of them.
Medical records.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Legal documents.
My entire life seemed to be stacked on shelves.
Dad whispered, “What is this?””
I walked to the nearest box.
A label read:
*MAYA CARTER — ORIGINAL RECORDS.*
I opened it.
Birth certificate.
Hospital records.
School records.
Every document from my childhood.
Then I found a second folder.
*LENA REEVES — MEDICAL.*
I opened it.
The first page was normal.
The second wasn't.
A hospital report showed my mother's condition had stabilized three days before her death.
I stared at it.
“Dad.””
He took the page.
His face changed.
“This isn't what the hospital told me.””
Detective Cole read over his shoulder.
“This says she wasn't in terminal decline.””
“What?””
Cole pointed.
“Her treatment was working.””
I looked at Dad.
“Then why did she die?””
Nobody answered.
I searched deeper.
There were blood test results.
Medication records.
And one handwritten note.
*Patient received incorrect medication at 11:40 p.m.*
My knees nearly gave out.
“Someone poisoned her.””
Dad grabbed the folder.
“Who administered it?””
Cole scanned the report.
“The nurse's name is redacted.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
I opened another file.
This one contained photographs.
My mother.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And a fourth person.
I stared at him.
I knew that face.
My breath stopped.
“Dad.””
He turned.
“That's…”
I couldn't finish.
It was our family doctor.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
My father's closest friend.
The man who had attended my mother's funeral.
The man who had hugged Dad and told him he needed to move on.
Cole looked at the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
The date was written underneath.
*Two weeks before Lena's death.*
Dad stepped backward.
“No.””
I opened another file.
Inside was a financial transfer.
A large payment.
From my mother's trust.
To an account under the name *S. Carter Medical Holdings.*
Dad's face became furious.
“That's impossible.””
I looked at him.
“You trusted him.””
“He was my friend.””
“He was around Mom.””
“He was her doctor.””
“Exactly.””
Dad sank into a chair.
Then Detective Cole found something else.
A sealed envelope.
It had my name on it.
*MAYA.*
I opened it.
My mother's handwriting filled the page.
*If you're reading this, then they failed to destroy the truth.*
I couldn't stop crying.
*Daniel tried to warn me. Samuel told me nobody would believe us. Vanessa was frightened and made the wrong choice. Marcus was never part of it.*
I looked at Dad.
He covered his face.
I kept reading.
*The person who killed me is not the person you think. Samuel helped them, but he wasn't the one giving the orders.*
My hands trembled.
Then came the final line.
*The person giving the orders is the one who has had access to Maya since the day I died.*
I stopped.
Dad looked up.
“What does it say?””
I couldn't answer.
Because I suddenly remembered the first night Vanessa entered our lives.
The first gift she'd ever given me.
A silver bracelet.
I had worn it for years.
I reached for my wrist.
The bracelet wasn't there.
I had lost it two months earlier.
Or at least, I thought I had.
Something metallic scraped beneath the desk.
Detective Cole crouched.
He pulled out a small tracking device.
Dad stared at it.
“That's been following us.””
Cole looked at me.
“No.””
He turned the device over.
There was a name engraved on the back.
*VANESSA.*
Before anyone could speak, the basement lights went out.
A door slammed upstairs.
Then we heard footsteps running across the floor above us.
Cole pulled his weapon.
“Stay here.””
Dad grabbed my hand.
“No.””
The footsteps stopped.
A man's voice came from the top of the stairs.
“Marcus.””
Dad froze.
The voice was familiar.
Then the man continued.
“You finally found the room.””
Cole raised his flashlight.
A shadow appeared on the wall.
Tall.
Still.
Then the man stepped into view.
It was Dr. Samuel Carter.
He smiled.
May you like
And in his hand was a photograph of my mother.
“She told me you'd eventually come looking.””
