Chapter 3: The Document

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Vanessa's words again.

*Because Maya was never meant to know.*

At 6:14 the next morning, I heard Dad's office door open.

I sat up in bed.

Footsteps crossed the hallway.

Then Dad knocked softly.

“Maya?””

I opened the door.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled. His eyes were red.

“Can I come in?””

I stepped aside.

He sat on the edge of my bed.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.

“Am I being taken away?””

Dad's face crumpled.

“No.””

“Then why is there a custody document?””

He looked down.

“Because someone filed paperwork.””

“Who?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Daniel Reeves?””

Dad hesitated.

“I don't know who he is.””

I stared at him.

“But his name was on it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don't have that answer.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“Then find it.””

Dad nodded.

“I will.””

He reached for my hand.

“I promise.””

A knock sounded downstairs.

Dad stood.

“Stay here.””

“Who is it?””

“I don't know.””

He left.

I heard the front door open.

Then Vanessa's voice.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

My heart started racing.

I stepped into the hallway.

Dad stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Vanessa was holding a large brown envelope.

“What is that?”” Dad asked.

She looked up at me.

Her expression changed.

“Maya, go back upstairs.””

“No.””

Dad took the envelope from her.

“What did you bring?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“The original.””

Dad opened it.

I walked down three steps.

“What original?””

He pulled out several pages.

I recognized my name immediately.

*MAYA ELIZABETH CARTER.*

My legs went weak.

Dad read the first page.

Then the second.

His hand began shaking.

“What the hell is this?””

Vanessa whispered, “It's complicated.””

“You filed for temporary guardianship?””

“I had reasons.””

“Against my daughter?””

“You weren't listening to me!””

Dad slammed the papers onto the table.

“I was her father!””

“And I was trying to protect this family!””

“From what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes were wet.

“From the truth.””

I walked into the kitchen.

“What truth?””

Neither answered.

I picked up the top page.

There was my full name.

My birthday.

My school.

My mother's name.

And a section titled:

*PROPOSED CUSTODIAL ARRANGEMENT.*

I looked at Dad.

“Why does it say I would live with someone named Daniel Reeves?””

Dad took the paper from my hand.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I do.””

Dad turned toward her.

“Then start talking.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel was someone your mother knew.””

Everything stopped.

“My mom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Before she married Marcus.””

Dad's expression changed.

“You told me your mother never had contact with him.””

“I didn't know everything.””

“You've known about this?””

“For years.””

I stared at her.

“You knew someone from my mom's past?””

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“Daniel Reeves was your mother's brother.””

I blinked.

“My uncle?””

Dad stepped back.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Your mother changed her last name when she married you.””

I frowned.

“She was always Carter.””

“No,” Vanessa said quietly.

“That was her married name.””

Dad's face went pale.

“What was her maiden name?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

I felt something cold move through me.

“Tell me.””

She finally whispered it.

“Reeves.””

I looked at the custody papers again.

Daniel Reeves.

My mother's brother.

My uncle.

Then I noticed something I'd missed before.

A line near the bottom of the document.

*Child to be transferred following father's temporary incapacity.*

I looked at Dad.

“What does that mean?””

He took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he froze.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer.

“Marcus?””

He sat down slowly.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I grabbed his arm.

“What does it mean?””

Dad looked up at me.

“It means whoever filed this wasn't planning for you to stay with me.””

My heart hammered.

“Who were they planning to take me from?””

He turned the page over.

There was another signature.

Not Daniel's.

Not Vanessa's.

Not mine.

Dad stared at it.

Then he whispered, “This is your mother's signature.””

I shook my head.

“That can't be.””

“She died eight years ago.””

Dad nodded.

“I know.””

He turned the page toward me.

The signature was dated *three months ago*.

My breath caught.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Who forged this?””

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

“I don't know.””

Dad stood abruptly.

“You said your mother knew Daniel. You said the custody document was meant to protect Maya. And now there's a signature dated three months ago.””

“I didn't forge it.””

“Then who did?””

She backed away.

“I swear, Marcus, I was trying to stop it.””

“Stop what?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

“I got a message two weeks ago.””

“What message?””

She turned the screen toward him.

There was one text.

No number saved.

No profile picture.

Just one sentence:

*Cancel Maya's ticket. Get her out of the house before Friday.*

Dad stared at the screen.

I couldn't breathe.

“Who sent it?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don't know.””

Dad took the phone from her.

Then another message appeared.

*You have until tonight.*

Dad's eyes widened.

A third message arrived before any of us could speak.

*If Maya stays with Marcus, she will learn what really happened to her mother.*

Dad slowly looked at me.

May you like

And this time, the fear in his eyes wasn't about losing a vacation.

It was about what someone had been hiding from us for eight years.
