Chapter 5: The Name on the Trust
Nobody moved.
Dad held the phone against his ear.
“Who are you?””
The voice on the other end was silent for several seconds.
Then:
“Ask Vanessa.””
The line went dead.
Dad stared at the phone.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
“Who was that?””
She wiped her cheek.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“Maya—”
“You knew about my uncle. You knew about the will. You knew about the custody papers.””
“I didn't know who was calling.””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“My mother and your mother were friends.””
Dad's head snapped toward her.
“You never told me that.””
“I didn't think it mattered.””
“It matters now.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Lena told me things she didn't tell you.””
I stared at her.
“Like what?””
“She was afraid someone was watching her.””
“When?””
“Months before she died.””
Dad shook his head.
“She had cancer.””
“I know.””
“She was sick.””
“I know.””
“She was scared because she knew she was dying.””
“No,” Vanessa whispered.
“She was scared because she thought someone was trying to make her disappear before she could change something.””
The kitchen went silent.
I whispered, “Change what?””
Vanessa looked at Dad.
“The trust.””
Dad immediately understood.
“What did she change?””
Vanessa stood.
“I don't know.””
“You just said—”
“I knew she wanted to change it. I never saw the final document.””
Dad grabbed his keys.
“Where are you going?””
“To the attorney.””
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I need you to stay here.””
“I won't.””
“Maya, this isn't safe.””
“Neither is hiding things from me.””
He closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked defeated.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.””
Vanessa stood.
“I'm coming too.””
Dad looked at her.
“You're going to tell us everything.””
“I will.””
They drove us to an old law office downtown.
The sign on the door read:
*HARRIS & COLE — ESTATE AND FAMILY LAW.*
An elderly man named Jonathan Harris met us in the lobby.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
“You're Maya.””
I nodded.
He looked at Dad.
“You brought her.””
“She deserves answers.””
Jonathan sighed.
“I agree.””
He led us into a conference room.
A thick file sat on the table.
My name was written across the cover.
I stared at it.
“How long has that been here?””
“Eight years,” Jonathan said.
My heart pounded.
“Why didn't I know?””
“Because you were a minor.””
“Who knew?””
He looked at Dad.
“Your father.””
I turned.
Dad lowered his head.
“You knew?””
“I knew there was a trust.””
“You knew there was a file?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your mother asked me not to.””
I stared at him.
“Before she died?””
“Yes.””
Jonathan opened the file.
“Your mother's original will left everything to you.””
He turned a page.
“But three months before her death, she created a supplemental trust.””
“What changed?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“The beneficiary.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
He slid a document across the table.
I looked down.
The name was unmistakable.
*Maya Elizabeth Carter.*
I frowned.
“That's me.””
“Yes.””
“But you said the beneficiary changed.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Your mother didn't remove you.””
“Then what changed?””
He turned another page.
“She added a co-trustee.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Who?””
Jonathan looked at him.
“You.””
Dad's face went blank.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does if your wife believed someone else might attempt to control the trust.””
I looked at the document.
“So Dad was supposed to protect it.””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Jonathan's expression became serious.
“That's where things become complicated.””
Vanessa spoke for the first time.
“Tell them.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
He opened another folder.
“This is the document that concerns me.””
He pushed it toward Dad.
Dad read it.
Then read it again.
“What is this?””
“A transfer authorization.””
“Signed by Lena?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Jonathan pointed to the bottom.
“Your wife had a power-of-attorney arrangement before her death.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Whose?””
Jonathan answered.
“Vanessa's.””
The room exploded.
Dad stood.
“You had power of attorney over Lena?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Only for medical matters.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“Not only medical.””
Dad stared at him.
“What else?””
“Financial.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You could control my mother's money?””
“Temporarily.””
“Why?””
“Because Lena asked me.””
I shook my head.
“My mom trusted you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you keep it secret?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because the person she was afraid of was looking for the trust.””
“Who?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Jonathan interrupted.
“There's another document.””
He reached into the file.
“This was sealed by your mother's request.””
He handed it to Dad.
Dad unfolded it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped breathing.
“What?”” I asked.
He didn't respond.
“Dad?””
He handed it to me.
At the bottom was a handwritten note from my mother.
I recognized her handwriting immediately.
My fingers trembled as I read:
*Marcus, if you're reading this, I failed to keep Maya safe. Do not trust anyone who tells you Daniel is the danger.*
I looked up.
Dad was staring at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“No.””
I continued reading.
*The person you need to fear is closer than you think.*
My heart hammered.
“Who did she mean?””
Jonathan looked uncomfortable.
“I believe your mother left another clue.””
“Where?””
He pointed to a sealed envelope.
“It was found inside the trust file after her death.””
Dad picked it up.
The envelope had never been opened.
My mother's handwriting was across the front.
*For Maya — on her 18th birthday.*
I stared at it.
“Why would she write me something for my eighteenth birthday?””
Dad whispered, “Because that's when the trust becomes yours.””
I looked at the sealed envelope.
Then Jonathan said something that made all three of us freeze.
“There's one more thing you need to understand.””
“What?””
“The trust isn't just money.””
He opened a final page.
“It owns the Coral Gables property.””
My breath caught.
“The house my mom promised we'd return to?””
“Yes.””
“Then why would someone care if I went to Miami?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Because that property contains something your mother believed was worth more than the house itself.””
“What?””
He didn't answer.
Instead, he pointed to the bottom of the document.
There was a handwritten line.
*If Maya ever returns to the house, she will find what I couldn't take with me.*
Dad stared at it.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
*Stop looking for Daniel. Look at your wife.*
Dad slowly raised his eyes toward Vanessa.
Vanessa's phone began ringing at the same time.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went completely white.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She didn't answer.
Dad reached for the phone.
Vanessa pulled it away.
Then a voice came through the speaker before she could silence it.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
And impossible.
“Maya?””
May you like
I stopped breathing.
It was my mother's voice.
