Chapter 9: The Woman in the Photograph

The first window shattered before anyone could react.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Maya screamed.

I grabbed her and pulled her behind the kitchen island.

“Everyone down!””

The house erupted into chaos.

Elena grabbed Elise.

Richard moved toward the hallway.

Denise stood frozen.

Not because she was scared.

Because she knew exactly who was coming.

“Denise!””

I shouted.

She looked at me.

“Who are they?””

Her face was pale.

“The people who clean up Victoria’s mistakes.””

Another crash.

The front door broke open.

Footsteps.

Several.

Calm.

Controlled.

Not criminals rushing in.

Professionals.

That scared me more.

Richard grabbed a weapon from the old cabinet.

I stared at him.

“You had a gun?””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this day.””

A voice called from the hallway.

“Richard.””

Everyone froze.

The voice was female.

Older.

Familiar.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew.

Even before she appeared.

A woman walked into the room.

Gray hair.

Elegant clothes.

A calm expression.

The same eyes I had seen in the mirror my entire life.

My mother.

Victoria Hale.

Alive.

Maya grabbed my arm.

“Dad…”

I couldn’t answer.

My entire childhood disappeared in one second.

The woman who had taught me to ride a bike.

The woman who baked birthday cakes.

The woman I buried.

Was standing ten feet away.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I couldn’t move.

“How?””

Victoria smiled.

“You always were curious.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re dead.””

“Yes.””

She tilted her head.

“Technically.””

The anger came back.

“You let me mourn you.””

“I had to.””

“You let me believe you were gone.””

“I needed everyone to believe it.””

I stepped forward.

“You destroyed my life.””

Victoria looked almost disappointed.

“No, Marcus.””

She glanced around the room.

“I built it.””

The words were horrifying.

Denise stepped forward.

“Victoria.””

My mother looked at her.

A cold smile appeared.

“You disappointed me.””

Denise looked down.

“I know.””

“You were supposed to protect the family.””

“I was.””

“No.””

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“You protected them.””

Denise said nothing.

I looked at my mother.

“You used everyone.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I prepared everyone.””

“You stole children.””

“I saved them.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“You stole them.””

Victoria sighed.

“That’s why you were never ready.””

“For what?””

“For the truth.””

She looked at Maya.

My entire body reacted.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t look at her.””

Victoria smiled.

“There he is.””

“What?””

“The father.””

She looked almost proud.

“The one thing I could never control.””

I stared.

“You tried.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You were my greatest failure.””

Maya looked terrified.

I held her hand.

“Stay behind me.””

Victoria watched us.

“She is exactly like Elena.””

“Good.””

“No.””

Victoria shook her head.

“She is exactly like you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She asks questions.””

The room went quiet.

“She refuses to obey.””

Victoria smiled.

“That is why she was dangerous.””

I looked at the flash drive in my hand.

“You wanted this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because it proves nothing.””

I laughed.

“You think we’re stupid?””

“No.””

She looked at Denise.

“I think you don’t understand what’s on it.””

Denise’s face changed.

“What?””

Victoria smiled.

“Ask Marcus who signed the documents.””

I froze.

Again.

My signature.

The fake documents.

The car.

The police report.

Everything.

I looked at the flash drive.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“I’m saying the person who created the evidence against us…”

She paused.

“And the person who exposed the family…”

Her eyes locked onto mine.

“Is you.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria smiled.

“You really don’t remember.””

My father stepped forward.

“Victoria, stop.””

She ignored him.

“Eight years ago, before Elena disappeared, you found out everything.””

My head started spinning.

“No.””

“You confronted us.””

“No.””

“You recorded conversations.””

“No.””

“You created backups.””

My breathing became uneven.

I looked at Elena.

Her face had changed.

She knew something.

“Elena?””

She whispered:

“Marcus…”

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“You don’t remember that night.””

The words hit me.

A memory.

A hospital.

A crash.

A missing week.

My head hurt.

Victoria smiled.

“Your father tried to protect you.””

She pointed at me.

“But he failed.””

I stared.

“What happened to me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria said the sentence that broke everything.

“You weren’t investigating your family, Marcus.””

She stepped closer.

“You were the one who started bringing them down.””

And then she handed me a photograph.

A photograph from eight years ago.

Me.

Standing beside Elena.

Holding a folder.

And behind us…

Was the evidence that could destroy the entire Hale family.

I turned the picture over.

On the back was a message.

May you like

Written in my handwriting.

*If I forget, remind me who I am.*
