Chapter 3: The Child Nobody Knew

The envelope sat on the table between us like a weapon.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the clock on the wall seemed too loud.

I looked at Elena.

Her face had gone pale.

That scared me more than Denise’s accusation.

Because Elena wasn’t angry.

She was afraid.

“Marcus,” Elena said quietly.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because whatever is in there, Denise wants you to see it before you know the truth.””

Denise smiled.

“Interesting.””

I turned toward her.

“What’s interesting?””

“You still protect her.””

“No.””

I picked up the envelope.

“I’m trying to understand why my wife was missing for eight years.””

Denise crossed her arms.

“Exactly.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And one picture that made my hands shake.

A little girl.

Standing beside Elena.

The girl looked about twelve years old.

She had Elena’s eyes.

Elena sat down.

“I can explain.””

I looked at her.

“Who is she?””

Silence.

Then Elena whispered:

“My daughter.””

Maya looked confused.

“What?””

Elena looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Maya stepped back.

“No, Mom.””

Her voice cracked.

“You had another child?””

Elena started crying.

“Yes.””

The pain on her face was unbearable.

“I never wanted to hide her from you.””

“Then why did you?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because I thought I was protecting both of you.””

Denise laughed.

“There it is.””

She pointed at Elena.

“The excuse she always used.””

I ignored her.

“Where is this girl now?””

Elena looked down.

“She’s twenty.””

I froze.

Twenty.

The same age as Tasha.

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What’s her name?””

“Elise.””

The room went silent.

Then Tasha spoke.

“Why does that name sound familiar?””

Everyone turned.

Denise’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Tasha,” Denise said.

“Go upstairs.””

Tasha frowned.

“Mom?””

“Now.””

“No.””

For the first time, Tasha looked directly at Denise with suspicion.

“What is going on?””

Denise’s expression hardened.

“Don’t question me.””

That sentence told me everything.

Tasha had never been allowed to question her.

I looked at Denise.

“What does Elise have to do with you?””

Nothing.

But her silence was an answer.

Elena stood.

“Your mother took Elise from me.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Elena looked at Denise.

“Tell him.””

Denise’s face turned cold.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“You took my baby.””

“I saved her.””

“You stole her.””

Maya looked between them.

“Dad…”

I could barely process the words.

Eight years ago, I had believed I lost my wife.

Now I was learning she had lost a child.

And my own family was connected.

“What did my mother do?”” I asked.

Elena looked at me.

“She had a network.””

“A network?””

“She found women who had no power. Women who had nobody looking for them.””

Her voice shook.

“She used their children as leverage.””

Denise snapped.

“Enough.””

“No,” Elena said.

“For eight years, I stayed silent because I thought silence kept my children alive.””

She looked at Maya.

“I was wrong.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A young woman stood there.

She wore a simple gray uniform.

A maid’s uniform.

She held a cleaning bag in one hand.

And a small envelope in the other.

I recognized her immediately.

Not because I knew her.

Because she looked exactly like Elena.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

Same quiet sadness.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Elise.””

The young woman looked at her.

“Hi, Mom.””

Maya started crying.

Denise stepped backward.

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.

The young woman walked forward.

“I brought the final evidence.””

Nobody spoke.

She placed the envelope on the table.

Then she looked at me.

“Mr. Hale.””

I stared.

“Why are you calling me that?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I’m not sure you still want to call me family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Elena.

Then at Elise.

Then at Denise.

“I need the truth.””

Elise nodded.

“You’ll get it.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single document.

A birth certificate.

But it wasn’t Elise’s name that made my heart stop.

It was the name listed as the father.

*Marcus Hale.*

I looked up.

“What?””

Elise whispered:

“Your mother stole me before you ever knew I existed.””

And then she placed another paper on the table.

A police report.

With my mother’s signature.

Dated eight years earlier.

The night Elena disappeared.
