Chapter 8: The Daughter They Wanted

The room changed after Elena said those words.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Maya looked between us.

“Mom?””

Elena immediately walked toward her.

“No.””

She took Maya’s hands.

“I need you to understand something.””

Maya looked scared.

“Understand what?””

“That none of this is your fault.””

That sentence made Maya’s face collapse.

“Why would you say that?””

Because she already knew.

Children always know when adults are hiding something.

I looked at Elena.

“Tell us.””

She nodded slowly.

“When I found out I was pregnant with Maya, Victoria changed.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she knew something.””

“What?””

Elena swallowed.

“She knew Maya’s birth was connected to your father’s research.””

I stared.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He was studying genetics.””

I almost laughed.

“Are you telling me this is about DNA?””

“Yes.””

“That’s insane.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds impossible.””

Elena looked at me.

“Eight years ago, I thought the same thing.””

She walked toward the window.

“Your father discovered that Victoria had been collecting information about families.””

“What kind of information?””

“Medical histories. Bloodlines. Inherited conditions.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she believed she could predict people.””

I looked at Maya.

“She believed Maya was special.””

Elena nodded.

“She believed Maya had something nobody else had.””

Maya’s voice was small.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

Then Elise spoke.

“She believed you were valuable.””

Maya looked at her.

“I’m not a thing.””

Elise’s expression broke.

“I know.””

Maya looked away.

“I spent my whole life thinking I was normal.””

Elena pulled her close.

“You are normal.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying I’m important because of something I didn’t choose.””

Nobody knew what to say.

Because she was right.

The worst part of secrets wasn’t discovering them.

It was realizing how much they had changed your life before you ever knew they existed.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Richard moved immediately.

“Stay back.””

He approached carefully.

Then looked through the window.

His face changed.

“It’s Denise.””

Maya stepped backward.

“No.””

I walked to the door.

Elena grabbed my arm.

“Marcus.””

“I need answers.””

“You need to be careful.””

I opened the door.

Denise stood outside.

No anger.

No arrogance.

Just exhaustion.

She looked at me.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t respond.

“I deserve it.””

That surprised me.

“You admit it?””

“Yes.””

She looked inside.

Her eyes landed on Maya.

For a moment, she looked genuinely sad.

Then she looked away.

“Can I come in?””

“No.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“Then talk.””

Denise took a breath.

“Your mother was going to take Maya.””

Elena stepped forward.

“We know.””

“No.””

Denise looked at her.

“You don’t.””

The confidence in her voice stopped everyone.

“She wasn’t going to take her because of her research.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then why?””

Denise looked at Maya.

“Because Victoria believed Maya would expose everything.””

Silence.

“What?””

Denise looked at me.

“Your daughter was the one person who could destroy her.””

“How?””

“Because Maya wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Everyone froze.

Maya went pale.

“What?””

Denise looked devastated.

“Victoria had a plan.””

I stepped forward.

“What plan?””

Denise whispered:

“To erase the evidence.””

The words hung in the air.

Elena covered her mouth.

My hands shook.

“You’re saying…”

Denise nodded.

“She was going to make Maya disappear.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter.

My child.

The little girl who used to fall asleep on my shoulder.

The teenager who apologized for someone stealing from her.

Someone had planned to erase her existence.

And I had invited one of those people into my home.

“Why did you stop her?”” I asked Denise.

She looked down.

“Because I couldn’t.””

The answer confused me.

“You couldn’t?””

She nodded.

“Because Maya reminded me of myself.””

Nobody spoke.

“I was taken too.””

Sarah’s words echoed in my mind.

Denise continued.

“Victoria found me when I was young. She convinced me she was saving me.””

Her eyes filled.

“She taught me that loyalty was the only thing keeping me alive.””

“So you married me.””

“Yes.””

“To spy on us.””

“Yes.””

“Then why stay?””

Denise looked at Maya.

“Because somewhere along the way, I started loving you.””

Maya looked hurt.

“Then why did you hurt me?””

Denise cried.

“Because I was afraid.””

The same answer.

Again.

But this time, I saw something different.

Not an excuse.

A confession.

Then Denise pulled out a small flash drive.

“I stole this from Victoria’s files.””

Richard looked shocked.

“What is it?””

“Everything.””

She handed it to me.

“The names. The records. The proof.””

I took it.

“Why now?””

Denise looked toward the road.

“Because they know I have it.””

A car engine started outside.

Everyone turned.

Two black SUVs stopped in front of the house.

The lights went off.

Then the doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Richard whispered:

“They found us.””

Denise’s face went white.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked truly terrified.

“Victoria’s people.””

I stared.

“My mother is dead.””

Denise shook her head.

“No.””

May you like

She looked at Maya.

“She is the one person who never dies.””
