Chapter 7: The Mother Behind the Monster
Sarah placed the folder on the table.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not even Sarah.
It was as if the entire warehouse was holding its breath, waiting for someone to admit this was all a nightmare.
But nightmares ended when you woke up.
My life had only gotten worse the more awake I became.
I looked at the photograph inside the folder.
Denise.
Victoria.
Elena.
Standing together twenty years earlier.
They weren’t strangers.
They weren’t connected by accident.
They were a part of the same story.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Sarah looked at me.
“The beginning.””
My father stepped closer.
“Sarah, you shouldn’t be here.””
She looked at him.
“Neither should you.””
The words carried years of anger.
Years of betrayal.
I looked between them.
“You both know each other.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked down.
“Because I helped create the monster you’re trying to destroy.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Sarah sat down slowly.
“When Victoria started taking children, she needed people who could make the disappearances look normal.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you helped her.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
She didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t create excuses.
She simply admitted it.
“Why?””
Sarah looked at the ground.
“Because I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.””
She looked at me.
“They made sure we were.””
The warehouse became silent.
“Victoria didn’t begin with kidnapping children,” Sarah said.
“She began with favors.””
“Favors?””
“She helped desperate families. She found homes for children. She connected people.””
My father nodded.
“Then she realized something.””
“What?””
Sarah’s voice lowered.
“People with power could decide who deserved a future.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She started choosing.””
“Yes.””
“Choosing what?””
“Who got to keep their children.””
I looked away.
The anger inside me was almost unbearable.
“How did Denise get involved?””
Sarah’s face changed.
Pain.
“She was young.””
“That doesn’t excuse anything.””
“No.””
Sarah nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
She opened the folder.
Inside was another photograph.
A younger Denise.
Holding a baby.
My breath caught.
“Is that Elise?””
Sarah nodded.
“Denise was the one who found Elena.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She was working for Victoria.””
“No.””
Sarah looked at me.
“Yes.””
My father spoke quietly.
“Denise wasn’t brought into your life by chance.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
“What are you saying?””
Sarah looked directly at me.
“She married you because Victoria wanted access to Maya.””
The world went quiet.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No.””
Sarah didn’t look away.
“Victoria believed Maya was the key.””
“Why?””
“Because Maya was Elena’s daughter.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does to people like Victoria.””
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“She believed bloodlines carried value.””
My stomach turned.
“She wanted Maya?””
“Yes.””
The thought made me sick.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The person I had spent years protecting.
They had looked at her like an object.
A possession.
I grabbed the table.
“What was Denise supposed to do?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then answered.
“Watch her.””
My heart stopped.
“Watch her?””
“Report her behavior. Report your finances. Report your family connections.””
I closed my eyes.
Every dinner.
Every conversation.
Every moment I thought was normal.
Was it all fake?
“She never loved us.””
Sarah didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than a lie.
I left the warehouse twenty minutes later.
Nobody tried to stop me.
Because they knew.
I needed to see Maya.
I needed to see my daughter.
When I returned home, the lights were on.
Maya was sitting at the kitchen table.
Elena beside her.
The moment Maya saw me, she stood.
“Dad?””
I walked straight to her.
And held her.
She cried into my shoulder.
“I thought you weren’t coming back.””
“I’m here.””
“What happened?””
I looked at Elena.
Then Elise.
Then Richard.
Everyone was waiting.
But I couldn’t say it.
Not yet.
Because saying it out loud would make it real.
Denise had never been my wife.
Not truly.
She had been a doorway.
A way for my mother’s secrets to enter my home.
Maya pulled back.
“Dad.””
I wiped her tears.
“What?””
“Where is Denise?””
The room became silent.
I looked toward the window.
Because I already knew.
She wasn’t gone.
People like Denise didn’t disappear.
They waited.
And my phone proved it.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
From Denise.
*You finally found out who I was. Now find out who Maya really is.*
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Elena.
“What does that mean?””
Elena’s face changed.
Fear.
“No.””
“What?””
She stood.
“Marcus…”
“What does she mean?””
Elena looked toward Maya.
Then whispered:
“Your daughter was never Victoria’s target.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
May you like
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was the reason Victoria started everything.””
