Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
Ryan stood in the doorway.
The gun in his hand was steady.
But his eyes were not.
They moved between me and Evelyn.
Like even he wasn’t sure what he was doing anymore.
Evelyn stepped inside.
“You have caused so much trouble, Michael.””
I stared at her.
“You murdered my mother.””
She didn’t react.
“You still believe that story?””
My anger burned.
“You admitted she was a problem.””
“She was.””
The coldness in her voice shocked me.
“She threatened everything.””
“What everything?””
She looked around the storage unit.
“The Bennett legacy.””
I laughed.
“You destroyed your own family for money?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“For control.””
That honesty was worse than a lie.
Detective Harris slowly moved his hand toward his weapon.
Ryan noticed.
“Don’t.””
The detective stopped.
Evelyn smiled.
“You were always predictable, detective.””
I looked at Ryan.
“You’re just like her?””
He looked away.
That told me enough.
“You helped her.””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“She helped my father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Ryan.””
But it was too late.
He continued.
“She promised my father she would protect him.””
Victor stepped forward.
“She used your father.””
Ryan looked at him.
“You don’t know anything.””
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“I know your father begged for help the night he disappeared.””
Ryan froze.
“What?””
Everyone looked at Victor.
“You were told Daniel abandoned you.””
Ryan’s face changed.
“He didn’t?””
Victor shook his head.
“Evelyn made sure he never came back.””
Silence.
Ryan looked at my grandmother.
“Is that true?””
Evelyn said nothing.
And that was enough.
Ryan’s grip on the gun loosened.
“You lied to me.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Everyone was useful.””
Those words changed everything.
Even Ryan understood.
She didn’t care about him.
She never had.
I saw the moment he realized it.
The same moment I had.
We were both pieces on her board.
Ryan lowered the weapon slightly.
Evelyn noticed.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I finally understand.””
The next few seconds happened quickly.
Detective Harris moved.
Ryan turned.
The gun fell.
Evelyn ran.
I chased her.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
She reached the end of the hallway.
There was nowhere to go.
She looked back at me.
“You really think you’re better than me?””
I stopped.
“You killed my mother.””
“I saved this family.””
“You destroyed it.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something beneath the arrogance.
Regret.
“My son was weak.””
I froze.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father wanted love more than power.””
I stared.
“That’s not weakness.””
She looked away.
“You sound just like him.””
Detective Harris arrived.
Evelyn surrendered without another word.
But before they took her away, she looked at me.
“There’s one thing your father never told you.””
I said nothing.
“Why your mother trusted Victor.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She smiled sadly.
“Because Victor wasn’t just your father’s partner.””
A pause.
“He was your biological father.””
The world went silent.
Again.
I looked at Victor.
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
After everything.
After all the lies.
There was still another secret.
Victor looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Michael.””
“No.””
I walked away.
Because I couldn’t take another truth.
Not tonight.
Later, after the police left and the sun rose over Savannah, I sat outside alone.
Vanessa found me.
She didn’t sit beside me.
She stayed a few feet away.
“I know you may never forgive me.””
I looked ahead.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You manipulated me.””
“Yes.””
“But you also saved my life.””
She looked surprised.
I sighed.
“I don’t know what to do with that.””
She nodded.
“I don’t either.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Harris.
One final update.
*We searched Evelyn’s files. We found something concerning.*
I opened the attachment.
A document.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Ryan’s.
I read the name listed as his father.
Then I stopped.
Because Ryan’s real father was not Daniel Thompson.
It was someone else.
May you like
Someone connected to me.
Someone who had been hiding in my family for decades.
