Chapter 12: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

The warehouse smelled like rust, dust, and old memories.

Detective Harris entered first.

Victor followed.

I walked behind them.

Vanessa stayed beside me.

For once, nobody argued.

Nobody lied.

At least not openly.

The address Ryan sent us belonged to an abandoned storage facility outside Savannah.

Rows of metal doors stretched into darkness.

Detective Harris checked the message again.

“This is definitely the location.””

Victor looked around.

“Daniel loved places like this.””

I glanced at him.

“You knew him well.””

Victor’s face tightened.

“Too well.””

We reached the final storage unit.

The lock was broken.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Documents.

Photographs.

Old computers.

Everything someone had spent years hiding.

Victor found a small recorder.

He picked it up.

“Here.””

My heart started racing.

“That’s it?””

“I don’t know.””

The recorder was old.

Dust covered the buttons.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice.

My mother.

I froze.

“Michael?””

I grabbed the recorder.

My mother’s voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this, then I’m gone.””

My knees almost gave out.

I had not heard her voice since I was a child.

Not in dreams.

Not in memories.

Now she was here.

Speaking to me.

“I don’t know who you can trust.””

A pause.

“But I need you to know something.””

The recording crackled.

“Your father loved you more than anything.””

I closed my eyes.

A tear fell before I could stop it.

“He will try to protect you. He will lie to you. But he will do it because he believes it’s the only way.””

I looked at Victor.

Even he looked shaken.

My mother continued.

“The people around us are dangerous.””

A pause.

“Especially Evelyn.””

Everyone went still.

My grandmother’s name.

Hearing it from my mother’s mouth felt unreal.

“She believes power is more important than people.””

The recording continued.

“But she is not the only one.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My mother’s voice lowered.

“The person who betrayed us is someone you would never suspect.””

The recorder clicked.

Then another voice appeared.

A man.

My father.

I froze.

“Anna, stop recording.””

My mother replied:

“No. Michael deserves to know.””

Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.

“He isn’t ready.””

My mother answered:

“He has to be.””

The recording ended.

Everyone stood silent.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Your parents knew something about you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But my voice lacked confidence.

Victor searched through the boxes.

Then he found another folder.

He opened it.

Inside were medical records.

My name was on them.

I grabbed them.

“What is this?””

Victor looked uncomfortable.

“Michael…”

I read the first page.

My birth records.

Then a note attached.

*Genetic confirmation required.*

My heart started pounding.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Michael…”

I looked at her.

“Say it.””

She looked terrified.

“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””

The world went silent.

I stared at her.

“No.””

Victor looked away.

My hands shook.

“No.””

The truth I had spent my whole life searching for was becoming something I never wanted.

Detective Harris carefully asked:

“Then who was?””

Before anyone could answer, the storage unit door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

Locked.

From outside.

Ryan’s voice came through the metal door.

“You finally found it.””

My heart stopped.

“You found the truth.””

A pause.

Then:

“But you still don’t know the biggest lie.””

I stepped toward the door.

“Ryan!””

He laughed.

“Ask Vanessa.””

Silence.

Then his final words came.

“Ask her why she married you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

May you like

And she whispered the words I never expected to hear.

“Because I was sent to watch you.””
