Chapter 13: The Marriage That Was A Mission

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Vanessa’s words echoed inside the locked storage unit.

Because I was sent to watch you.

Not because she loved me.

Not because we found each other.

Not because twelve years of memories meant anything.

A mission.

That was all I had been.

I stared at her.

“Who sent you?””

She looked down.

“Michael…”

“Who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your grandmother.””

The answer felt like a physical blow.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing else made sense anymore.

“Twelve years.””

She looked at me.

“Twelve years you slept next to me.””

“Yes.””

“Twelve years you watched me trust you.””

“Yes.””

“And you were gathering information?””

She closed her eyes.

“At first.””

That word caught my attention.

“At first?””

Vanessa looked up.

“At first, that was why I came into your life.””

The storage unit was silent.

“But then what?””

She swallowed.

“Then I fell in love with you.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

“That’s fair.””

I hated that she accepted it.

I wanted her to argue.

To defend herself.

To give me a reason to hate her completely.

But she didn’t.

She just stood there.

Broken.

Victor stepped forward.

“Michael, listen.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew she was sent by Evelyn.””

“Yes.””

My anger exploded.

“And you let me marry her?””

Victor looked ashamed.

“Your father knew.””

Everything stopped.

“My father knew?””

Victor nodded.

“He discovered it before your wedding.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

Victor looked at the floor.

“Because he believed people could change.””

I almost laughed.

“My father trusted the wrong people his entire life.””

“No.””

Victor looked at me.

“He trusted people because he wanted to believe there was still good in them.””

The storage unit suddenly shook.

Someone hit the door from outside.

Ryan.

“You’re running out of time!””

Detective Harris checked the lock.

“We need another way out.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“I was twenty-eight when Evelyn approached me.””

“Why you?””

“Because I knew Daniel.””

I frowned.

“You were married to him.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa continued.

“Evelyn knew Daniel had hidden something from her. She believed your father knew where it was.””

“The safe.””

She nodded.

“She thought you would eventually find it.””

I looked at the boxes around us.

“So she sent you to monitor me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Ryan come into our lives?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Because he discovered I had failed.””

“Failed?””

She nodded.

“Evelyn wanted me to find the documents before you did.””

I felt sick.

“And when I didn’t?””

“Ryan came.””

The door shook again.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“With you.””

I froze.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would hurt you.””

Victor suddenly moved toward a stack of boxes.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked.

He pulled out an old metal container.

Inside was a small device.

A recorder.

My heart raced.

“What is that?””

Victor looked at me.

“The final message.””

I pressed the button.

Static.

Then my father’s voice.

“Michael.””

I closed my eyes.

Another message from the man who had left me with more questions than answers.

“If you’re hearing this, then you know about Vanessa.””

I looked at her.

My father continued.

“She was sent to betray you.””

Vanessa began crying.

“But I was wrong about one thing.””

The recording paused.

“I thought people could only be defined by their choices.””

A breath.

“But sometimes, they are defined by the moment they choose to stop running.””

I looked at Vanessa.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

The recording continued.

“Michael, the person you need to fear is not Vanessa.””

The lights above us flickered.

“Because she chose you.””

A pause.

“The person you need to fear is the one who taught her how to lie.””

The recording ended.

At that exact moment, the storage door opened.

Ryan stood outside.

Holding a gun.

And behind him was Evelyn.

May you like

My grandmother smiled.

“Your father was always too sentimental.””
