Chapter 11: The Family That Was Built On Lies

I couldn’t recognize the woman standing in front of me.

Not because she looked different.

Because she didn’t.

She looked exactly like my grandmother.

The same silver hair.

The same gentle expression.

The same voice that used to tell me bedtime stories.

That was what made it worse.

Monsters were supposed to look like monsters.

Not family.

Detective Harris kept his weapon lowered but ready.

“Mrs. Bennett, step away from everyone.””

My grandmother looked at him.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

He didn’t blink.

“I understand enough.””

She smiled slightly.

“No, detective. You understand crimes.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“You don’t understand family.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t talk to me about family.””

She looked hurt.

A performance.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I stepped forward.

“You murdered my mother.””

Her expression hardened.

“I protected you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protected me?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the laptop.

“Your father wanted to destroy everything your grandfather built.””

I stared.

“My father wanted justice.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He wanted revenge.””

Victor stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

My grandmother looked at him.

“You should know about lies.””

The tension between them was immediate.

Detective Harris noticed it.

“You two have been fighting for years.””

My grandmother smiled.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Because Victor knows what your father never admitted.””

I turned toward Victor.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“What?””

Victor looked away.

“I made a mistake.””

My grandmother laughed quietly.

“Not a mistake.””

She stepped closer.

“A choice.””

I felt trapped between two versions of the truth.

Everyone had a different story.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

Everyone had ruined my life.

“What did you do, Victor?””

He closed his eyes.

“Your mother discovered the financial crimes.””

I waited.

“She found proof.””

My grandmother interrupted.

“And she planned to expose everyone.””

Victor continued.

“She went to me first.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she trusted me.””

A painful pause.

“And I failed her.””

The room became quiet.

My grandmother looked almost satisfied.

“She died because she was too loyal.””

My blood boiled.

“You say that like you’re proud.””

She looked at me.

“I’m saying it because it’s the truth.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She stood near the desk.

“No, that’s not the truth.””

My grandmother looked at her.

“You should be careful.””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“But I know what happened.””

I stared at her.

“What do you know?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother left something behind.””

My grandmother’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw fear.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“A recording.””

Victor immediately looked at her.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

My grandmother stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

The warning in her voice was clear.

Vanessa didn’t stop.

“She gave it to Daniel.””

My heart sank.

Daniel again.

The same name connected to every secret.

My grandmother turned cold.

“That was a mistake.””

Detective Harris noticed.

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Evelyn looked afraid.

She didn’t look powerful.

She looked desperate.

The kind of desperation that comes when someone realizes control is slipping away.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

This time, from Ryan.

*Your grandmother is lying.*

I looked at the screen.

Another message.

*But so is everyone else.*

Then a location appeared.

A warehouse address outside Savannah.

And one final sentence.

*Come there if you want the recording of your mother’s death.*

I looked up.

Victor saw my face.

“What did he send?””

I showed him.

His expression changed instantly.

“No.””

“What?””

“That’s where Daniel kept his files.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Then we go together.””

I looked at my grandmother.

She was watching me.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Almost sad.

“Michael.””

I stopped.

Her voice softened.

“I did terrible things.””

Everyone froze.

“But I did them because I knew something your father never accepted.””

I stared.

“What?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Your mother wasn’t killed because she discovered a crime.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then why?””

May you like

My grandmother whispered:

“Because she discovered who you really are.””
