Chapter 5: The Wife Who Wanted Everything

Daniel read Vanessa's name three times.

Each time, the letters remained the same.

Vanessa Hayes.

His wife.

The woman who had cried in his arms when they learned they were expecting a child. The woman who had asked him to promise that their baby would never grow up feeling unwanted. The woman he had defended against his own father only hours earlier.

Her signature sat beneath Ethan Cole's.

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

"She witnessed the transfer?""

Robert nodded.

"According to this document.""

"Then she knew about it.""

"That is what we need to establish.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She told me she had no idea what Ethan was carrying.""

Robert's expression hardened.

"Then she lied to you again.""

Daniel turned away, fighting the urge to throw something.

For years, he had thought betrayal would announce itself with something unmistakable. A secret phone, a hotel receipt, a stranger's confession.

He had never imagined it would arrive through an ordinary signature on a corporate document.

"What happens now?"" he asked.

Robert returned the notice to its envelope.

"Now we stop reacting emotionally and start collecting evidence.""

"Can we stop the transfer?""

"The company has already challenged the filing. Our lawyers will seek an injunction if necessary. But until the disputed documents are examined, we must assume the other side will try to move quickly.""

Daniel stared at the signature.

"How much of the company could they take?""

"If the fabricated agreement were accepted, Ethan could claim voting rights over a substantial portion of my shares.""

"Enough to control the board?""

"Potentially.""

Daniel sat down heavily.

His father had built the company from a small construction office into one of the region's most successful property development firms. He had worked through recessions, survived a lawsuit that nearly bankrupted him, and spent years rebuilding the business after a major project collapsed.

Now someone was trying to steal it using his name.

And Daniel had nearly helped that person by attacking the one man who could protect the company.

"I should have listened to you," he said.

Robert sat opposite him.

"Yes, you should have.""

Daniel nodded, accepting the blunt answer.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

"Good. Because forgiveness isn't a button I can press just because you're sorry.""

Daniel looked up.

Robert's expression softened slightly.

"But you're here now. What matters is what you do with the truth.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"I want to talk to Vanessa.""

"Not alone.""

"Why?""

"Because if she is involved in this, she may try to manipulate you again. We need a clear record of what she says.""

Daniel considered that.

Then he called the company's general counsel, Margaret Lewis, and explained what they had found.

Margaret arrived forty minutes later carrying a leather briefcase and a folder of corporate records.

She was in her early fifties, with short brown hair and the calm, precise manner of someone who had spent decades watching powerful people make expensive mistakes.

After examining the documents, she removed her glasses.

"This is serious," she said.

"The signature on the alleged transfer appears consistent with Mr. Hayes's genuine signature, but that proves nothing by itself. We need the original document, the filing history, and the metadata associated with its submission.""

"Can we stop the claim?"" Daniel asked.

"We can challenge it. Whether we can stop every action immediately depends on the documents and the relevant legal process. But I strongly recommend that neither of you contact Ethan directly.""

Robert nodded.

"Agreed.""

Margaret turned to Daniel.

"And don't threaten your wife, destroy messages, or attempt to obtain records unlawfully. Preserve everything. We need facts, not another crisis.""

Daniel felt the rebuke.

"Understood.""

Margaret opened another folder.

"There is also a discrepancy in the company's records. Six weeks ago, someone requested copies of confidential ownership documents using an authorization linked to the executive office.""

"Whose authorization?"" Robert asked.

Margaret checked the page.

"Daniel's.""

Daniel went still.

"What?""

"The request appears to have been made using your digital approval credentials.""

"I didn't authorize it.""

Margaret looked up.

"Then we need to determine whether your account was accessed without permission or whether the request was submitted under your name through another mechanism.""

Robert folded his arms.

"Who received the documents?""

"Ethan's intermediary company.""

Daniel felt sick.

Someone had used his name to obtain the information needed to challenge his father's ownership.

And if Vanessa had signed the transfer as a witness, the supposed marital dispute might have been nothing more than a distraction.

"She had access to my laptop," he said quietly.

Margaret made a note.

"That is relevant. Tell me exactly when and where she had access, and preserve any messages or access logs. Don't assume the method until the technical review confirms it.""

Daniel looked at Robert.

"She knew about the company accounts. She knew which documents you kept in your study. She knew when you would visit the house.""

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"Which means she may have been planning this for longer than we thought.""

At the hospital, Vanessa was sitting in bed when Daniel returned.

She had changed into fresh clothes, and her hair had been brushed smooth. A half-finished cup of tea sat on the bedside table.

When she saw him, relief flashed across her face.

"You came back.""

Daniel remained near the door.

"We need to talk.""

She studied his expression.

"Have you spoken to your father?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"He showed me the transfer document.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the cup.

Daniel noticed.

"Your name is on it.""

She placed the cup down.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She looked toward the hallway.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

"Daniel, please.""

"Margaret Lewis is joining us by video. She's the company's general counsel.""

Vanessa's face lost color.

"Why would you bring a lawyer into a private conversation between husband and wife?""

"Because this stopped being a private marital disagreement when someone tried to claim my father's shares.""

She pushed the blanket away.

"I didn't try to steal anything.""

"Then why did you sign the document?""

"I was a witness.""

"To a transfer my father says never happened?""

"Your father lies!""

Daniel held her gaze.

"Did he sign it?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Did you see him sign it?""

"No.""

"Then what exactly were you witnessing?""

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Daniel pulled a chair toward the bed.

"Ethan visited our house this morning. You gave him five thousand dollars. He left with a document bearing my father's name. And now we have a notice demanding my father's voting rights, with your signature attached.""

"I didn't know he was going to file anything!""

"But you knew the document existed.""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

The admission settled between them.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"When did you first see it?""

"Several weeks ago.""

"Several weeks?""

"Ethan told me your father had promised him shares years ago. He said he had proof and needed my help verifying the details.""

"And you believed him.""

"He showed me letters.""

"Where are they?""

"I don't have them.""

"Where are they, Vanessa?""

"Ethan took them back.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You gave him money, signed a document, and helped him access confidential information about my father's company. What exactly did you think would happen?""

She pressed a hand to her belly.

"I thought he would finally get what he deserved.""

"Who? Ethan?""

"My father-in-law!""

Daniel stood.

"Robert never took anything from you.""

"He took the man I loved away from me!""

"He didn't force you to marry me.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"No. He just made sure Ethan couldn't afford to marry me. Then you came along with your perfect family, your money, your beautiful house, and your father's company. Everyone thought I should be grateful.""

Daniel looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.

"Was that why you married me?""

She looked away.

"Not at first.""

The words struck harder than a denial.

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Not at first?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I loved you, Daniel. I did. But after we married, your father kept treating me like I didn't belong.

Ethan came back, and he showed me the letters. He told me Robert had lied to both of us.""

"So you decided to help him take the company?""

"I wanted the truth.""

"You could have asked my father.""

"He would have denied everything!""

"Then you could have hired a lawyer.""

"Ethan said the documents would prove it.""

"Did you ever ask him to verify them independently?""

She said nothing.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you ever ask yourself why a man who supposedly wanted justice was demanding money from you?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"He said he needed it to fight your father.""

"And what did he promise you?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"That we'd finally be free of Robert's control.""

Daniel froze.

"We?""

Vanessa looked up.

"I didn't mean—"

"You said we'd be free. Who is we?""

She looked terrified now.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Vanessa, were you planning to leave me?""

"No.""

"Then why did you say that?""

"I meant Ethan and me would finally be free of the past.""

He watched her carefully.

"Are you still in love with him?""

Her silence answered before she did.

"I don't know," she whispered.

Daniel stood.

For a moment, he couldn't hear anything except the distant hum of the hospital ventilation system.

He had imagined discovering an affair would be the worst possible betrayal.

But this was something different.

Vanessa had not simply hidden a relationship.

She had allowed him to become a weapon in a fight she had been conducting behind his back.

And now he had to wonder whether their child had ever been part of her plans—or merely another reason to keep him close.

Margaret's voice came through the video call on Daniel's phone.

"Mrs. Hayes, I need to ask you some questions about the document. Did you sign it voluntarily?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Yes.""

"Did you understand what it purported to do?""

"I was told it was evidence of an agreement.""

"Did you know it would be submitted to claim voting rights over Mr. Hayes's shares?""

"No.""

"Did you provide any corporate records to Mr. Cole?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Tell the truth.""

She looked at him.

Then, barely audibly, she said, "Yes.""

Margaret made a note.

"Which records?""

"Documents from Daniel's laptop.""

Daniel felt the room spin.

"You accessed my laptop?""

"I was looking for something else.""

"What?""

She began trembling.

"I wanted to find the old letters Ethan said your father had written.""

"And you found my company files instead?""

"Yes.""

"Did you send them to Ethan?""

Vanessa nodded.

"How many?""

"I don't know.""

Margaret's expression hardened.

"Mrs. Hayes, this is a serious matter. You should obtain independent legal advice before answering further questions.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

Daniel ended the call.

He stood beside the bed, looking at the woman who had once promised to love him for the rest of her life.

"Did you ever love me?"" he asked.

Vanessa reached for his hand.

"Daniel, please. I love you.""

He stepped away.

"Then why did you do this?""

"Because I was angry!""

"Angry enough to risk everything we built?""

She covered her face.

"I thought I could fix it before you found out.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Fix what?""

She lowered her hands.

For a moment, she seemed to be deciding whether to tell him something.

Then she whispered, "Ethan told me your father had already started transferring his shares. He said if we didn't act quickly, we'd lose our chance.""

"Our chance at what?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with fresh tears.

"Money.""

Daniel went silent.

She continued, her voice shaking.

"He told me that once he had control of the company, he would give me enough to leave and start over. He said I could take the baby and never have to depend on your family again.""

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

"You were planning to take my child and leave me?""

"I didn't know what else to do!""

"You could have told me the truth.""

"You would have chosen your father!""

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was again.

The same excuse.

The same attempt to turn her choices into his fault.

When he opened his eyes, his voice was steady.

"You didn't lose me because I chose my father. You lost my trust because you chose to lie.""

He turned toward the door.

Vanessa called after him.

"Daniel, wait!""

He stopped but did not turn around.

"There's something else," she said.

He remained still.

"Ethan told me your father wasn't the only person who signed the agreement.""

Daniel slowly looked back.

Vanessa's hands were shaking.

"He said there was a second signature. Someone inside the company. Someone who helped him prepare the documents.""

"Who?""

She stared at him.

May you like

Then she whispered a name that made Daniel's stomach turn.

"Your father's chief financial officer.""
