Chapter 3: The Visitor She Tried to Hide

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't speak.

He stood beside the hospital window with his phone pressed to his ear, listening to the rain tap against the glass.

"My wife's former fiancé?"" he repeated.

"Yes, sir," Maria said.

"His name is Ethan Cole.""

Daniel knew the name.

He had heard it only once, during a conversation before the wedding. Vanessa had described Ethan as an immature man from her past who had wanted to marry her but couldn't commit to a serious future.

She'd told Daniel the relationship had ended years earlier.

She had never mentioned that Ethan was still in her life.

"When did he come?"" Daniel asked.

"This morning. Around ten thirty.""

"What did he want?""

"I don't know. They spoke in the front sitting room. I was cleaning upstairs, and I didn't want to interrupt.""

"Did you see him leave?""

"Yes, sir. He left at eleven ten.""

Daniel looked at the clock.

His father had arrived shortly after noon.

Less than two hours later, Vanessa had staged the fall.

"Send me the footage," he said.

"I will. But, sir, there's something else.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"What now?""

"Mrs. Hayes gave him an envelope before he left.""

"What was in it?""

"I couldn't see. But he looked inside before putting it in his jacket.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?""

"Because I didn't think it was my place to interfere in your marriage. I thought perhaps he was a family friend.""

"And now?""

"Now I think you deserve to know the truth.""

Daniel thanked her and ended the call.

When he turned around, Vanessa was sitting upright in the hospital bed.

Her face had gone pale.

"Who was that?"" she asked.

"Maria.""

"What does she want?""

Daniel walked back toward the bed.

"Apparently, Ethan Cole visited our house this morning.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the bedsheet.

For the first time since their wedding, Daniel saw her fail to hide her reaction.

It was tiny.

A quick intake of breath. A flicker of recognition. Her eyes moving toward the door.

But it was enough.

"Why was Ethan at our house?"" Daniel asked.

"I have no idea.""

"Maria says he stayed for forty minutes.""

"Then Maria must have misunderstood.""

"She saw you give him an envelope.""

Vanessa looked away.

"She's always been jealous of me.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Jealous of what?""

"Of my marriage. Of the way you treat me. She thinks she's part of this family, but she's only an employee.""

"Don't do that.""

"Do what?""

"Change the subject by attacking someone who isn't here to defend herself.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Daniel pulled a chair closer to the bed but didn't sit down.

"Who is Ethan?""

"I told you. Someone I used to know.""

"Someone you used to love?""

She swallowed.

"Years ago.""

"Then why was he at our house this morning?""

"He needed to speak to me.""

"About what?""

"Private things.""

Daniel let out a humorless laugh.

"Private things? You live in my house, share my bed, carry my child, and apparently invite your former fiancé over while I'm at work. But I'm supposed to accept that as private?""

"You have no right to interrogate me!""

The outburst startled even her.

A nurse passing the open doorway glanced inside.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I'm not interrogating you. I'm asking why you lied to me.""

"I didn't lie.""

"You told me you hadn't seen him in years.""

"I haven't seen him socially.""

"What does that even mean?""

Vanessa pressed a hand to her forehead.

"I'm exhausted, Daniel. The doctor said I need rest.""

He watched her for a long moment.

Then he sat down.

"All right. Rest. But I'm not leaving until you tell me why my father was the target of whatever you and Ethan discussed this morning.""

Vanessa's head snapped up.

"What makes you think Ethan had anything to do with your father?""

"Because you lied about one thing, and now I'm finding out about another.""

"You think everything is connected just because you're angry!""

"I think you made me assault my own father, and I want to understand why.""

She turned toward the window.

Daniel waited.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Finally, she whispered, "Ethan wanted money.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What kind of money?""

"He said he was having financial problems. He asked for help.""

"And you gave him an envelope?""

"Some cash. That's all.""

"How much?""

"Five thousand dollars.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Five thousand dollars?""

"It was my money.""

"From which account?""

"Our joint account.""

She looked down.

Daniel stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.

"You took five thousand dollars from our joint account and gave it to your ex-fiancé without telling me?""

"I was going to explain.""

"When?""

"When things were calmer!""

"Things were calm this morning!""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't understand what Ethan is like. He can be very persuasive.""

"Then why did you invite him into our house?""

"I didn't invite him. He showed up.""

"Maria says you were waiting for him.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel felt something cold settle in his chest.

He had always believed their marriage was built on honesty. They had argued, certainly. They had disagreed about money, family, and how much time he spent at work. But he had never imagined Vanessa was capable of deliberately manipulating him into hurting his own father.

Now every memory seemed to demand a second look.

The nights she'd complained that Robert was controlling.

The times she'd insisted Daniel reduce his visits.

The way she'd encouraged him to keep his finances separate from his father's business.

Had those moments been ordinary marital disagreements?

Or had they been pieces of something larger?

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

Maria had sent him two video files.

He opened the first.

The front entrance camera showed a black sedan pulling into the driveway at 10:27 a.m. A man stepped out, checked his watch, and walked toward the house.

Ethan Cole.

Daniel recognized him from the photograph Vanessa had once shown him years earlier.

He was tall, neatly dressed, with dark hair and an expensive watch.

The second video showed Ethan leaving at 11:12 a.m.

Before he reached his car, he looked over his shoulder.

Then he removed a folded paper from his pocket, studied it, and smiled.

Daniel replayed the moment.

The smile wasn't friendly.

It was the smile of a man who had just secured something he wanted.

Daniel enlarged the image.

The paper bore a logo.

A logo he knew well.

Hayes Development Group.

His father's company.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He called Maria again.

"Can you zoom in on the paper Ethan was holding?""

"I can try, sir.""

"And send me the clearest image you have.""

A few seconds later, a still image arrived.

It wasn't sharp, but Daniel could make out several words.

*TRANSFER OF SHARES.*

Beneath them was a signature line.

And beside it, the name Robert Hayes.

Daniel felt the room tilt.

His father had never told him he planned to transfer shares to Vanessa. In fact, Robert had repeatedly insisted that Daniel's inheritance would be handled through proper legal channels and that no one should pressure him into making financial decisions.

Why would a document bearing his father's name be in Ethan's hands?

Daniel turned toward the bed.

"Vanessa, what is this?""

She stared at the screen.

For the first time, she looked truly frightened.

"Where did you get that?""

"Answer me.""

"I don't know what it is.""

"It's a document from my father's company.""

"I've never seen it before.""

"Then why do you recognize it?""

"I don't!""

Her voice cracked.

Daniel held the phone closer.

"Look at me and tell me you didn't know Ethan was carrying a document about my father's shares.""

Vanessa looked at the screen, then at Daniel.

Her silence lasted only two seconds.

But it was long enough.

Daniel stepped away from the bed.

"Oh, my God.""

"Daniel, please—"

"What have you done?""

"Nothing! I haven't done anything!""

"Then tell me why Ethan has a document bearing my father's name.""

Vanessa began crying again.

This time, her tears came with no performance, no careful pauses, no dramatic clutching of her belly.

She looked cornered.

"You're making a mistake," she whispered.

"Then help me understand.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

She pressed both hands over her face.

"Because if I tell you, you'll never forgive me.""

Daniel stood motionless.

A nurse entered to check Vanessa's vital signs, and he stepped into the corridor to give them privacy.

He could hear Vanessa crying behind the door.

For a moment, he wanted to go back inside. He wanted her to explain everything, to tell him this was some terrible misunderstanding, to restore the woman he thought he had married.

Then he remembered his father's blood on the napkin.

He remembered Robert asking him to look at him.

And he remembered the video of Vanessa checking the camera before throwing herself onto the floor.

Daniel walked to the end of the corridor and called his father.

Robert answered after the third ring.

"Daniel?""

His voice sounded tired.

"Dad, I need to ask you something.""

"Is Vanessa all right?""

"The baby is fine. The doctor says there are no signs of injury.""

Robert exhaled with relief.

"Thank God.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Dad, did you sign anything recently involving your shares in the company?""

There was a long silence.

"No," Robert finally replied.

"Why?""

"Maria saw Ethan Cole at the house this morning. He left carrying a document with your name on it.""

Robert's breathing changed.

"What did you say his name was?""

"Ethan Cole. Vanessa's former fiancé.""

Another silence.

Then Robert spoke in a voice Daniel had never heard before.

"Daniel, listen to me carefully. Do not sign anything. Do not transfer any money. And do not let Vanessa leave that house with any of my business documents.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Dad, what is going on?""

"I need to check something first.""

"Check what?""

Robert took a shaky breath.

"Three months ago, someone requested confidential information about the company's ownership structure. I thought it was a routine inquiry. But now, if Ethan Cole is involved—"

He stopped.

"Dad?""

Robert's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Daniel, I think someone has been trying to steal the company from us.""

Daniel stared at the hospital wall.

Behind him, Vanessa's crying had stopped.

The door to her room opened.

She stood in the doorway, pale and trembling, watching him with an expression he couldn't read.

Then she spoke.

"Daniel, please don't listen to your father.""

He turned toward her.

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at the phone in his hand.

"Because Ethan didn't come to our house for money.""

May you like

She swallowed hard.

"He came because your father promised him the company.""
