Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Shares
For three seconds, Daniel forgot how to breathe.
Vanessa stood in the hospital doorway, one hand resting on her belly, the other gripping the doorframe. Her face was pale, but her eyes were sharp. She looked less like a frightened pregnant woman than someone who had just realized her carefully arranged story was beginning to collapse.
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
"Repeat what you just said.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Your father promised Ethan the company. That's why Ethan came to see me.""
Daniel stared at her.
"My father has spent forty years building Hayes Development Group. He would never hand it to a stranger.""
"Ethan isn't a stranger to him.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means your father knew about us before you and I got married.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"About you and Ethan?""
She nodded.
"Your father found out we were engaged years ago. He contacted Ethan privately. He told him he could make him wealthy if he walked away from me.""
Daniel almost laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"My father paid your ex-fiancé to leave you?""
"Yes.""
"And you expect me to believe that?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Why would I lie about something like that?""
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Because he had watched her lie with tears in her eyes before, he couldn't answer that question anymore.
"Did Ethan show you proof?""
She hesitated.
"Yes.""
"What proof?""
"An agreement. Your father's signature. A promise that Ethan would receive a controlling interest in the company after a certain date.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That makes no sense.""
"Your father wanted to separate us. He didn't want me marrying into this family, so he made Ethan an offer. But when Ethan came back into my life, he told me the agreement had never been honored.""
"When did he come back?""
"Four months ago.""
Daniel stared at her.
Four months.
That was around the time Vanessa had started complaining that Robert visited too often. Around the time she began suggesting that Daniel take over more responsibility at the company. Around the time she had insisted that his father was becoming forgetful and should consider retiring.
"You've been seeing Ethan for four months?""
"Not like that!""
"Then how?""
"He contacted me. He wanted to know whether I still had the letters from when we were together. He said they could prove your father had manipulated us both.""
"And you believed him?""
"I didn't know what to believe!""
"So you gave him five thousand dollars?""
"He needed money to hire a lawyer.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Vanessa, you lied to me about seeing him. You gave him money from our account. You staged an assault against my father. And now you're telling me my father has been secretly conspiring against you for years.""
"I didn't stage an assault!""
Daniel lifted his phone.
"I watched you throw yourself onto the floor.""
Her face hardened.
"I was trying to make you understand what your father has done to me.""
"By making me hit him?""
"You wouldn't listen!""
"You never told me the truth!""
"Because you always choose him!""
The words echoed down the corridor.
A nurse appeared at the far end, glanced toward them, and continued walking.
Daniel stepped closer to his wife.
"Do you hear yourself? You made me believe my father was capable of hurting you. You watched me beat him. You knew what I was doing, and you let me continue.""
Vanessa's chin trembled.
"I didn't think you'd hit him.""
"You screamed that he attacked you while I was standing three feet away!""
"I was upset!""
"You looked at the camera before you fell!""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel stared at her.
That silence was more revealing than any confession.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, "I wanted him to stop interfering in our lives.""
"By getting him arrested?""
"I didn't want him arrested.""
"Then what did you want?""
She looked toward the hospital room.
"I wanted him to be afraid of losing you.""
Daniel felt a strange emptiness spread through him.
"You wanted me to choose between you and my father.""
"I wanted my husband to stand up for me.""
"Against a crime he didn't commit?""
She began crying again.
Daniel turned away.
His phone was still connected to Robert's call. He lifted it to his ear.
"Dad, are you there?""
"I'm here," Robert replied.
"Vanessa says you promised Ethan a controlling interest in the company.""
The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.
Then Robert spoke.
"I never promised Ethan Cole anything.""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"You're lying!""
Daniel raised a hand.
"Don't.""
She stopped.
Robert continued.
"Daniel, I knew Ethan years ago. I met him once when Vanessa was dating him. I disliked him, but I never offered him money or shares.""
"Then why does he have a document with your signature?""
"I don't know. But if that document exists, I want to see it.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Of course you'd deny it. You always get what you want, don't you?""
Robert's voice remained quiet.
"Vanessa, I have never tried to take anything from you.""
"You took Ethan away from me!""
"I did not.""
"You told him he wasn't good enough for this family!""
Robert fell silent.
Daniel looked at his wife.
"Did he actually say that to Ethan?""
Vanessa's expression shifted.
"He didn't have to say it. He made it clear.""
"That's not an answer.""
"He humiliated Ethan. He told him that men without established careers had no business marrying into wealthy families.""
Robert sighed.
"I told Ethan that if he wanted to marry Vanessa, he needed to be honest about his financial situation. He had borrowed money from several people and refused to explain where it had gone. I never offered him company shares.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You expect everyone to believe you?""
"No," Robert said.
"I expect my son to investigate before accusing me of another crime.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
The shame was unbearable.
"Dad, I'm sorry.""
Robert didn't answer immediately.
"Come home when you're ready to talk," he said at last.
"But don't bring Vanessa here until you've worked out what is happening.""
The call ended.
Daniel lowered the phone.
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're really going to abandon me while I'm pregnant?""
"I'm not abandoning you. I'm trying to understand who I'm married to.""
"Your father has always hated me.""
"Stop saying that.""
"Why? Because it makes you uncomfortable?""
"Because I watched you lie about him!""
Her face twisted with anger.
"You think you're so righteous now? You punched him before you watched that video. You believed me because you wanted to believe me. Maybe you should ask yourself why.""
Daniel froze.
For one terrible moment, her words found their mark.
He had acted without thinking.
He had let anger replace judgment.
He had hurt his father because he believed a story that confirmed his own fear of failing to protect his family.
Vanessa saw his hesitation and stepped closer.
"You're not innocent, Daniel. You wanted to be the hero. I gave you a reason to act, and you acted. Don't pretend I forced you.""
Daniel looked at her.
She was right about one thing.
She hadn't forced his fist to move.
But that didn't make her innocent.
It made what she'd done even worse.
"You need to rest," he said.
"Daniel—"
"I'm going home to speak with my father. I'll arrange for someone to stay with you until the doctor discharges you.""
Her mouth fell open.
"You're leaving me here?""
"I'm leaving because neither of us is going to solve this while we're shouting at each other.""
He walked toward the elevator.
Behind him, Vanessa called his name twice.
He didn't turn around.
At the mansion, Robert sat in his study with an ice pack against his cheek.
The knitted baby blanket lay folded on his desk.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then Daniel walked inside.
"Dad.""
Robert removed the ice pack.
"Did the doctor say the baby was fine?""
"Yes.""
"Good.""
Daniel looked at the bruises beneath his father's eye.
"I don't know how to apologize for what I did.""
Robert placed the ice pack on the desk.
"Start by telling me why you believed her without asking me a single question.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Because I was scared something had happened to my child.""
"So was I.""
"I thought—"
"You thought anger was the same thing as love.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
Robert looked away, his jaw tightening.
"I raised you alone for three years after your mother died. I worked two jobs. I missed birthdays, school plays, and more dinners than I can count. I did everything I could to make sure you never felt abandoned.""
"I know.""
"Do you? Because when Vanessa screamed, you looked at me as if I were a stranger who had broken into your home.""
Daniel's shoulders sagged.
"I'm sorry.""
Robert stood and walked to the window.
"I don't want you to spend the rest of your life apologizing. I want you to learn something from what happened.""
"What?""
"That love without judgment can become a weapon in the wrong person's hands.""
Daniel wiped his eyes.
"I'll make this right.""
"You can't undo what happened today. But you can decide what happens next.""
Daniel took out his phone and showed Robert the still image Maria had sent.
Robert studied it closely.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?""
"Maria saw Ethan leaving the house with the document.""
Robert zoomed in on the signature.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then he opened a locked drawer and removed a folder containing copies of recent corporate filings.
He spread several pages across the desk.
"Three months ago, our legal department received a request to verify the ownership of a block of shares I hold personally. The request included a document with my signature.""
Daniel leaned over the desk.
"Was it genuine?""
"The signature looked genuine. The document wasn't.""
Robert pulled out a second sheet.
"It was a draft agreement I had rejected years ago. Someone changed the date, altered the terms, and submitted it as if I had signed it.""
Daniel felt cold.
"Who submitted it?""
"The request came through an intermediary company.""
"Who owns it?""
Robert turned the page toward him.
The name at the top was unfamiliar.
But beneath it, in the section listing authorized representatives, Daniel recognized a name immediately.
Ethan Cole.
Robert looked at his son.
"I thought this was an attempt to force a settlement. I had no idea Vanessa was involved.""
Daniel stared at the document.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know you were connected to it. I wanted to verify everything before making accusations.""
Daniel thought about the envelope Vanessa had given Ethan.
The money.
The staged fall.
The false accusation.
"What if she was trying to get you removed from the company?""
Robert's expression darkened.
"Then we need to find out how far they've gone.""
He picked up his phone and called the company's general counsel.
After a brief exchange, he asked for a complete review of the disputed filings and any recent changes to the ownership records.
When he ended the call, Daniel noticed something on the desk.
A letter.
It was addressed to Robert from the company's bank.
The envelope had been opened, but the contents were still inside.
Daniel read the first paragraph.
Then he read it again.
"Dad, why would the bank freeze your personal share account?""
Robert took the letter.
His face drained of color.
"They didn't freeze it," he whispered.
"They placed a temporary restriction on any transfer pending verification of an ownership claim.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Someone is trying to take your shares.""
Robert nodded slowly.
Then his phone rang.
He answered, listened, and gradually straightened.
"You're certain?""
A pause.
"Send the documents to my office immediately.""
He ended the call.
Daniel watched him.
"What happened?""
Robert looked at his son.
"The company has received a formal notice demanding that I surrender my voting rights.""
"From whom?""
Robert picked up the last page of the notice.
His hand trembled.
"The claimant is Ethan Cole.""
Then he turned the paper around.
The document contained one additional name.
May you like
The person who had signed as a witness to the alleged transfer.
Vanessa Hayes.
