Chapter 2: The Video That Exposed Her
"Give me that phone!""
Vanessa's scream cut through the room before Daniel could even take the device from Maria.
She struggled to sit upright, one hand still pressed against her belly.
"Maria, how dare you record me while I'm injured?""
Maria stared at her.
"I didn't record you, Mrs. Hayes. The security system did.""
"That's private footage!""
"It's footage from the living room," Maria replied.
"The same room where you just accused Mr. Robert of assaulting you.""
Vanessa's mouth opened, then closed.
Daniel slowly turned toward Maria.
"Show me.""
Maria hesitated.
"Sir, perhaps we should call an ambulance first.""
"Show me the video.""
"Daniel!"" Vanessa cried.
"I'm pregnant! Your father pushed me, and now your housekeeper is trying to humiliate me!""
Robert stood beside the sofa, one hand pressed against his split lip.
He looked at his son with an expression Daniel would later describe as worse than anger.
It was disappointment.
"Son," Robert said quietly, "if you need to see a recording to believe me, then show it to yourself. But please don't hit me again.""
Daniel flinched.
Maria unlocked her phone and opened the security application.
"The camera records continuously," she explained.
"I received a notification when the living room sensor detected sudden movement. I checked it because I heard Mrs. Hayes screaming.""
She turned the screen toward Daniel.
The video began with Robert holding the knitted blanket.
There was no sound at first, but the camera's microphone activated a few seconds later.
Daniel watched his wife point at his father.
He watched Robert step back.
He watched Vanessa glance at the security camera.
Then the recording showed something that made his face go blank.
Vanessa had deliberately positioned herself beside the coffee table.
She checked the hallway.
She looked at the camera again.
Then she threw herself backward.
Robert never touched her.
Not once.
The room fell silent.
Daniel replayed the footage.
Then he replayed it again.
"She looked at the camera," he whispered.
Maria nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
"Before she fell.""
"Yes.""
Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.
On the screen, Vanessa was still lying on the floor, screaming that Robert had pushed her.
Daniel looked up at his wife.
"Tell me this isn't real.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"Daniel, you don't understand what happened.""
"I just watched it happen!""
"You saw a few seconds of footage! You don't know what he said to me before that!""
Robert let out a broken laugh.
"What could I possibly have said that would justify this?""
Vanessa pointed at him.
"He has been trying to control me for months!""
"I asked whether you needed help choosing a blanket," Robert replied.
"You always make me feel small!""
"And that gave you the right to make your husband beat me?""
Daniel's voice thundered across the room.
Vanessa went quiet.
He held up the phone.
"You made me punch my own father?""
She stared at him, breathing hard.
"Daniel, I was scared.""
"Scared of what? He was walking away!""
"He was threatening me!""
"Where?"" Daniel demanded.
"Show me the threat. Show me where he touched you.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears again.
But this time, Daniel didn't move toward her.
He didn't kneel.
He didn't offer his hand.
For the first time that afternoon, she had to cry without an audience willing to rescue her.
"You were supposed to protect me," she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"You are my husband!""
"And he's my father!""
Robert lowered himself carefully onto the sofa. His hand trembled as he reached for a napkin to wipe the blood from his mouth.
Maria immediately hurried to his side.
"Mr. Robert, please sit still. I'll get some ice.""
"I'm all right, Maria.""
"No, you're not," she said firmly.
"Your lip is bleeding.""
Daniel watched her place a folded cloth against his father's face.
He looked at the bruising already forming beneath Robert's eye.
Then he looked at his own fist.
A red mark crossed his knuckles.
He stepped backward.
"Oh, God.""
Robert didn't answer.
Daniel approached him slowly.
"Dad—"
"Don't.""
The single word stopped him.
Robert looked up.
"I have spent my entire life teaching you that a man must protect the people he loves. I thought I had taught you to ask questions before you raised your hands.""
Daniel swallowed.
"I thought she was hurt.""
"So you decided I deserved to be hurt?""
"No. I—"
"You didn't even ask me what happened.""
Daniel's eyes reddened.
"I'm sorry.""
Robert turned his face away.
"I don't know what to do with your apology right now.""
Vanessa began sobbing louder.
"This is unbelievable. Everyone is acting like I'm some kind of monster because I fell!""
Maria looked at her sharply.
"You didn't just fall, Mrs. Hayes. You accused an innocent man of assault.""
"I was frightened!""
"You looked at the camera before you did it.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"Shut up, Maria!""
Daniel turned.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Vanessa stared at him as if he had slapped her.
"You're taking the housekeeper's side over your pregnant wife?""
"I'm taking the side of what I saw.""
She pushed herself upright.
"Fine. Then let me leave.""
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Where are you going?""
"Somewhere I don't have to be insulted.""
"You said your baby might be hurt. We need to get you checked.""
For a fraction of a second, Vanessa hesitated.
Then she pressed both hands to her belly and grimaced.
"My stomach hurts.""
The words changed everything.
Daniel's anger vanished beneath a wave of panic.
"Where? Tell me where it hurts.""
"Low down. I don't know. Something feels wrong.""
Maria immediately reached for her purse.
"I'll call emergency services.""
Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.
"Don't let your father come near me.""
Daniel looked at Robert.
His father was still sitting on the sofa, holding the bloodstained napkin to his mouth.
Something inside Daniel seemed to crack.
"Maria, call the ambulance," he said.
"I'll take Vanessa to the hospital.""
Robert slowly stood.
"I'll come with you.""
Vanessa recoiled.
"No!""
Daniel looked at her.
"He's not going to touch you.""
"I can't be in the same car as him!""
"Then he can follow separately.""
Robert's expression tightened, but he nodded.
"Do whatever you need to do for the baby.""
Vanessa looked away.
Within minutes, the house had become a blur of movement. Maria gathered Vanessa's medical records. Daniel retrieved the car keys. Robert stood silently by the doorway while his son helped his wife outside.
Just before Daniel reached the door, Robert spoke.
"Son.""
Daniel stopped.
His father looked at him with tired eyes.
"When you were six, you broke a neighbor's window playing baseball. You came home terrified. You told me your friend had done it.""
Daniel remembered.
He had forgotten the incident for decades.
"I made you go back and tell the truth," Robert continued.
"You cried the entire way there, but you did it.""
Daniel's throat tightened.
Robert glanced at Vanessa, who was waiting in the car.
"I don't know when you stopped being that boy.""
Daniel couldn't answer.
He left without another word.
At the hospital, the examination showed no signs of trauma from the fall. The baby's heartbeat was strong, and the doctor explained that Vanessa should still follow her pregnancy care instructions and return if she developed concerning symptoms.
Daniel sat beside her bed, his hands clasped between his knees.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Are you still angry with me?""
He didn't answer immediately.
"Why did you do it?""
She stared at the blanket covering her legs.
"I told you. Your father has been making my life miserable.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Her jaw tightened.
"Maybe I wanted you to understand how I felt.""
"By making me beat him?""
"I didn't tell you to hit him!""
Daniel looked at her.
"You told me he pushed you. You watched me grab him. You watched me punch him twice. You didn't say a word.""
Tears slid down her cheeks.
"I was scared.""
"Of him?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, rain had begun streaking the glass.
He could still hear his father's voice.
You didn't even ask me what happened.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Maria appeared on the screen.
*Sir, I reviewed the footage again. There's something else you need to see.*
Daniel frowned.
Another message arrived.
*The living room camera isn't the only camera that recorded today.*
He called her immediately.
"Maria, what do you mean?""
Her voice was low.
"Mr. Daniel, I checked the hallway camera and the footage from the front entrance. Mrs. Hayes wasn't alone before your father arrived.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She was watching him now.
"What are you saying?""
Maria took a breath.
"Someone came to the house this morning. A man. He stayed for nearly forty minutes.""
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"Who?""
Maria paused.
May you like
Then she said a name Daniel had never expected to hear.
"Your wife's former fiancé.""
