Chapter 9: The Room Beneath The House

The entrance was hidden behind a wall panel.

A place I had walked past hundreds of times.

A place I never knew existed.

My father’s old house had been sold after his death.

But my mother had kept one promise.

She never sold the basement.

She told everyone it was damaged.

Unsafe.

Not worth fixing.

She lied.

Everyone lied.

But this time…

The lie protected something.

Marcus held the flashlight as we stepped down the narrow stairs.

The air smelled like dust and old wood.

Every step felt like walking deeper into my father’s memory.

At the bottom was a small room.

A desk.

Shelves.

Boxes.

And photographs.

My father’s hidden office.

I touched the desk.

“This was here the whole time?””

My mother nodded.

“I couldn’t destroy it.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She cried quietly.

“Because your father told me not to.””

I found another letter.

This one had a date.

The day before he died.

I opened it.

*If you found this room, you know the truth has finally reached you.*

I sat down.

My father’s words filled the silence.

*Daniel believes he controls people because he knows their weaknesses. He does not understand that love creates strength.*

I looked at Marcus.

Then Olivia.

Then my mother.

*The evidence against Daniel is not enough to send him away. He is careful. He planned for that.*

I turned the page.

*But there is one thing he cannot explain.*

My heart raced.

*Why he was at my house the night I died.*

The room became silent.

My father knew.

He knew.

I continued reading.

*Daniel did not kill me.*

Everyone froze.

The sentence shocked me.

*But he allowed me to die.*

I covered my mouth.

My father continued.

*He refused to call for help because he believed I would expose him.*

My hands shook.

“He let him die…”

Marcus whispered.

The next page had a photograph.

My father and Daniel.

Outside the house.

On that night.

Then another picture.

A car.

Daniel’s car.

And another person standing beside it.

I stared.

Because the person beside Daniel wasn’t my mother.

It wasn’t Olivia.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It was Vanessa.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

I handed him the photo.

His face changed.

“No.””

Olivia looked.

“She was there?””

I nodded.

Vanessa.

The woman who appeared six months ago.

The woman who wanted my husband.

She had been connected to my family for years.

My phone suddenly rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was quiet.

Different.

Not arrogant.

Not cruel.

Afraid.

“Nia.””

I said nothing.

“I know what you found.””

“How?””

A pause.

“Because I helped hide it.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

“You were there that night?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her breathing shook.

“Because Daniel made me go.””

I looked at the photo.

“Why would he?””

“Because I was the only person who could get close to your family without suspicion.””

My stomach turned.

“You mean before you tried to destroy my marriage?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I never wanted Marcus.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

“I wanted what Daniel promised me.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“What did he promise?””

“He said once your family was gone, I would get a position in the company.””

I stared at the phone.

“But you said you loved him.””

A bitter laugh.

“I said whatever I needed to say.””

The honesty was disturbing.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then:

“He knows you found the room.””

My blood froze.

“How?””

“Because he was the one who told me to call you.””

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Nia, get away from the house.””

Too late.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

My mother whispered:

“Someone is here.””

The footsteps were slow.

Calm.

Like whoever was coming knew exactly where we were.

Marcus moved in front of me.

Olivia grabbed my hand.

And then a voice came from the top of the stairs.

A voice I knew.

A voice I never expected to hear.

“After all these years…”

Daniel said.

“…you finally found your father’s room.””

The light from the hallway disappeared.

May you like

Because someone had turned it off.

And Daniel Carter stepped into the darkness.
