Chapter 2: The Woman Who Thought She Won

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

A few sheets folded together.

But my hands shook like I was holding something dangerous.

Vanessa watched me.

Not Marcus.

Me.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She wasn’t afraid of what Marcus had done.

She was afraid of what I was about to learn.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know she was going to be here?””

Marcus pulled out the chair beside me.

“Yes.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I wanted her here.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

“You wanted this?””

“Nia—”

“No.””

I looked between him and Vanessa.

“You brought me here knowing she would say those things?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“I brought you here because you deserved to see the truth.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Marcus turned.

“No. What’s unbelievable is that you still think you can control this.””

Her face hardened.

“You promised me you would talk to her.””

“I promised you nothing.””

The confidence in Vanessa’s expression cracked.

I watched them carefully.

There was history there.

Not the kind I feared.

Something else.

Something uglier.

I placed the envelope on the table.

“Someone explain.””

Neither of them spoke.

The silence told me more than words could.

Finally, Marcus sat down.

“Six months ago, when the company started struggling, Vanessa offered to help.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I did help.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You helped yourself.””

Her lips pressed together.

I looked at Marcus.

“What happened?””

He took a breath.

“She started spreading rumors.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Rumors? Is that what you’re calling it?””

Marcus ignored her.

“She told people at work that our marriage was already ending.””

I felt a cold sensation move through my body.

“She said that?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Because it was obvious.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“No. It wasn’t.””

His voice lowered.

“You created problems and then acted like you were solving them.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You’re acting like I forced you to talk to me.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt.

Because even though I wanted to trust him…

I needed the truth.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“I talked to her.””

I swallowed.

“How much?””

“Not the way she wanted you to believe.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Interesting.””

Marcus continued.

“When my company was struggling, I was desperate. I thought she was helping me find investors.””

“And?””

“She wasn’t.””

He looked at the envelope.

“That’s why I put everything in there.””

My fingers moved toward it.

“What exactly is inside?””

Before Marcus could answer, Vanessa interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because men like Marcus always rewrite history when they get caught.””

Marcus’s face became unreadable.

“Caught doing what?””

Vanessa froze.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He placed it on the table.

A recording was already open.

Vanessa stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Something you said three weeks ago.””

Her face changed.

“Nobody records private conversations.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You should be more careful about who you trust.””

He pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Vanessa’s voice filled the table.

“I don’t care if he loves her. Love isn’t the point. Once Nia leaves, he’ll have no reason to fight me.””

My breath stopped.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Marcus stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said that?””

She recovered quickly.

“That’s edited.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You know it isn’t.””

She pointed at him.

“You were spying on me?””

“No.””

He leaned back.

“You gave me the recording yourself.””

That confused me.

Vanessa looked confused too.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because she wanted me to hear it.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because she thought it would make me angry enough to leave you.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“You’re lying.””

Marcus reached into his wallet.

He pulled out a small memory card.

“I copied everything.””

The restaurant suddenly felt smaller.

Like the walls were moving closer.

I looked at my husband.

“Marcus…”

He covered my hand with his.

“I should have told you sooner.””

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because he wasn’t saying he did nothing wrong.

He was admitting he waited.

“How much did you hide from me?””

His eyes dropped.

“Too much.””

The honesty shocked me.

I expected excuses.

I expected him to defend himself.

Instead, he looked broken.

“I thought I could fix it without hurting you.””

I pulled my hand away.

“You decided what pain I could handle?””

“Nia—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“You don’t get to protect me by keeping me in the dark.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Vanessa watched us.

And for the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

Because she had expected a divorce.

She had expected a woman collapsing.

She had expected Marcus standing beside her.

Instead, she was watching the two people she tried to separate finally face the truth together.

But there was still one question I couldn’t ignore.

I picked up the envelope.

“Why does this scare her?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because it proves what she did.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were documents.

Printed messages.

Bank records.

Photos.

My eyes moved across the first page.

And then I saw a name.

A name I recognized.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

Because Vanessa hadn’t just been trying to steal my husband.

She had been destroying something much bigger.

Something connected to the one person Marcus trusted most.

His own business partner.

His closest friend.

His brother-in-law.

And the final document in the envelope had a signature at the bottom.

A signature that made Marcus whisper:

“She never thought I would find this.””

I looked up.

“Find what?””

Marcus stared at the papers.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“She wasn’t supposed to know.””
