Chapter 4: The Photo That Changed Everything

The photo was still open on Marcus’s phone.

I stared at it.

Then I stared again.

Because my mind kept trying to explain something my eyes had already understood.

The person standing beside Marcus in the picture wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t anyone I expected.

It was my sister.

Olivia.

My older sister.

The woman who had hugged me on my wedding day and told me I had found “the kind of love people spend their whole lives searching for.””

The woman who sat beside me during every family dinner.

The woman who called Marcus “the little brother she never had.””

My fingers went numb around the phone.

“Why is Olivia with you?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

I looked up.

“Marcus.””

His eyes were filled with regret.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

“That sentence has become your favorite one lately.””

He looked down.

I hated that I still noticed small things about him.

The way he rubbed his thumb against his wedding ring when he was nervous.

The way his shoulders dropped when he knew he had hurt me.

The way he looked older than he did six months ago.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying something heavy alone.

“Tell me the truth.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

We were still standing inside the restaurant.

People had started leaving.

The staff pretended not to watch us.

But I didn’t care anymore.

The woman who had tried to steal my husband.

The friend who had betrayed him.

The sister who had hidden something from me.

Everything had become noise.

I needed one answer.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“The night you thought I was meeting Vanessa…”

I remembered.

Of course I remembered.

It was the night everything changed.

Marcus had left our house at 9:00 p.m.

He said there was an emergency with the company.

I believed him.

Until I saw a message pop up on his tablet.

A message from Vanessa.

*You can’t keep avoiding this. We need to talk tonight.*

I had confronted him.

He looked shocked.

He said it wasn’t what I thought.

But then he left anyway.

And he didn’t come home until sunrise.

That was the night a small piece of trust inside me broke.

I looked at him.

“So where were you?””

Marcus sat down slowly.

“I was following Olivia.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She called me that afternoon.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew something was wrong.””

I frowned.

“Olivia knew?””

He nodded.

“She had been watching Daniel.””

The name made my stomach tighten.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the photo.

“Because she suspected he was stealing from the company.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“No, Olivia would have told me.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

And that hurt.

Because if he had defended her, maybe I could have believed him.

But he didn’t.

“She didn’t tell you because she thought she was protecting you.””

I looked away.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Marcus reached for my hand.

I moved away.

Not because I didn’t love him.

Because I did.

And that was the problem.

Love made betrayal hurt more.

“She found evidence,” Marcus continued.

“Evidence against Daniel and Vanessa.””

I looked at him.

“Together?””

He nodded.

“They were working together.””

The pieces started moving.

The rumors.

The distance.

The company problems.

Vanessa’s confidence.

“She knew about the money.””

“Yes.””

“And she used it against you.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the photo again.

“But why was Olivia there?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because she was trying to get proof.””

I stared at him.

“By herself?””

“Yes.””

“Marcus, that’s insane.””

“I know.””

His voice became softer.

“That’s why I went after her.””

I looked at him.

“You followed my sister?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because Olivia begged me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked away.

“She said if you knew, you would confront Daniel.””

“And?””

“She was afraid he would destroy everything.””

I stood.

“So everyone knew something except me.””

“Nia—”

“No.””

I picked up my purse.

“I need air.””

Marcus stood too.

“I’ll come with you.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed a moment where nobody was explaining things to me.

Nobody was protecting me.

Nobody was deciding what truth I deserved.

Outside the restaurant, the cold night air hit my face.

I walked to the sidewalk.

For the first time in months, I wasn’t angry at Marcus.

I was overwhelmed.

Because the story I had believed was simple.

My husband was falling away.

Another woman was taking my place.

My marriage was ending.

But the truth was something else.

My husband had been fighting a war I didn’t know existed.

And the people closest to us had been standing on the battlefield.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Olivia.

I almost didn’t answer.

Almost.

Then I did.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then her voice.

“Nia.””

My sister sounded terrified.

“Where are you?””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“Because Marcus finally told you.””

I closed my eyes.

“You knew?””

“Nia, listen to me—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say that.””

She went quiet.

“You all knew.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“From what?””

“Nia…”

“From my own husband? From my own life?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“From what Daniel would do if he knew you were involved.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Silence.

Then Olivia said something that made my blood run cold.

“Daniel knows you have the documents.””

I froze.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

My heart started pounding.

“Olivia.””

“He called me ten minutes ago.””

“What did he say?””

Her breathing changed.

“He said if you opened the envelope…”

She stopped.

“Say it.””

“He said you would finally learn why your father died.””

The world seemed to stop.

My father.

Dead for eight years.

A heart attack.

That was the official story.

Everyone accepted it.

Everyone except…

Olivia.

“Why would Daniel mention Dad?””

My sister didn’t answer.

“Olivia.””

Her voice became a whisper.

“Because Daniel wasn’t just stealing from Marcus.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What else was he doing?””

A car horn sounded in the distance.

May you like

Then Olivia said:

“He was hiding what happened the night your father died.””
