Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Smile
I read the signature again.
And again.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Daniel Carter.
Marcus’s business partner.
His best friend for twelve years.
The man who stood beside us at our wedding.
The man who called Marcus his brother.
I looked up slowly.
“Daniel?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I turned the page.
The documents were invoices.
Transfers.
Payments.
Numbers I didn’t fully understand.
But I understood one thing.
Money had disappeared.
A lot of money.
“Are you saying Daniel stole from the company?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Vanessa sat down.
Her confidence was gone.
The woman who entered the restaurant like a queen now looked like someone waiting for a sentence.
I looked at her.
“How long have you known?””
She looked away.
“Known what?””
“Don’t.””
My voice surprised even me.
“Don’t insult me by pretending.””
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her glass.
Marcus leaned forward.
“She knew everything.””
I looked at him.
“She was involved?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
A small, bitter sound.
“You really think you’re the hero now?””
Marcus stared at her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I think I’m finally done being the person you manipulated.””
She stood.
“You’re blaming me because you’re scared.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m blaming you because I have proof.””
The waiter approached our table carefully.
“Is everything okay?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at him.
“Give us a few minutes.””
The waiter quickly walked away.
I stared at the envelope.
All those months.
All those nights.
All those moments when I thought Marcus was pulling away because he didn’t love me anymore…
He had been fighting something else.
Something he thought he could handle alone.
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His face changed.
The anger disappeared.
Only regret remained.
“Because I knew what you would do.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You would blame yourself.””
I said nothing.
Because he was right.
I had done that before.
When the company struggled, I sold my car.
When bills piled up, I picked up extra work.
When Marcus stopped smiling, I wondered what I had done wrong.
He reached across the table.
“I watched you give everything to help me.””
His voice lowered.
“And I couldn’t tell you that the person I trusted most was helping destroy everything.””
I looked down.
A tear landed on the paper.
I hated that.
I hated crying in front of Vanessa.
But then Marcus said something that changed everything.
“I never stopped choosing you.””
I looked at him.
He continued.
“Not once.””
Vanessa made a disgusted sound.
“Please.””
We both looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You two are acting like some perfect love story.””
She pointed at Marcus.
“You forget something.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What?””
She smiled.
A different smile.
Not the victorious one from before.
A desperate one.
“You still need me.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Because you don’t know everything.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
And suddenly I understood something.
She wasn’t afraid anymore.
She had another weapon.
“I thought Marcus told you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Told me what?””
Marcus stood.
“Vanessa.””
But she kept going.
“You really don’t know?””
I looked at my husband.
His silence was answer enough.
“What?””
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he whispered:
“Nia…”
I felt the air disappear.
“What did you not tell me?””
He looked at the table.
And for the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
Vanessa smiled.
She had been waiting for this moment.
“I guess the envelope wasn’t the only thing he hid.””
I stood up.
The chair scraped against the floor.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that hurt more than any lie.
Because Marcus always had something to say.
But now he had nothing.
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“You should ask him about the night he disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She walked toward the exit.
“Ask him where he really was.””
Marcus moved.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
She turned around.
Her smile returned.
Small.
Cruel.
“You wanted honesty, Marcus.””
Then she looked at me.
“Now she gets all of it.””
The restaurant door closed behind her.
I stood there, frozen.
My husband.
The envelope.
The documents.
The betrayal.
Everything felt like pieces of a puzzle that didn’t fit.
I turned to Marcus.
“What night?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
And the sadness in his eyes terrified me.
Because it wasn’t the look of a man caught cheating.
It was the look of a man who had been carrying a secret for a long time.
Finally, he whispered:
“The night you thought I was with Vanessa…”
My breath caught.
“You weren’t?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then where were you?””
Marcus reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
Opened a folder.
And placed it in my hands.
There was one photo.
One message.
One piece of evidence.
And when I saw the name attached to it…
I realized Vanessa wasn’t the only person who had been lying to me.
May you like
Because the person who knew the truth before I did…
Was someone I had invited into my home.
