Chapter 9: The Person Nobody Suspected

The flash drive sat on the table between us.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

Someone was playing a much bigger game than we thought.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Michael, I swear I didn't know.""

I wanted to believe her.

But trust was no longer something I could give freely.

Not after tonight.

Claire walked around the table.

"We need to understand the timeline.""

She looked at Vanessa.

"When did you find this?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't.""

Claire frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Vanessa looked terrified.

"I woke up after the wedding started falling apart.""

She took a breath.

"I went to my father's office because I wanted answers.""

"And?""

"The door was unlocked.""

She looked at the flash drive.

"It was sitting on his desk with my name on it.""

I stared.

"Your name?""

She nodded.

"I thought my father left it for me.""

Claire's expression darkened.

"Someone planted it.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

The police.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A voice spoke.

"Michael Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"This is Detective Harris.""

My stomach tightened.

"Is this about my father?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"What happened?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"We reviewed the evidence against Arthur Bennett.""

"And?""

"The charges don't match the documents.""

I closed my eyes.

I knew it.

"But there's more.""

"What?""

The detective hesitated.

"Your father's arrest was a distraction.""

My heart raced.

"From what?""

"Someone accessed the Bennett family trust during the confusion.""

I froze.

"How much?""

The answer came quietly.

"Nearly two hundred million dollars.""

Nobody spoke.

Two hundred million.

While everyone was watching my father's downfall, someone had robbed him.

Claire immediately grabbed her laptop.

"That's what Robert wanted.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She typed quickly.

"Destroy his reputation, freeze his accounts, create chaos.""

Her eyes moved across the screen.

"And transfer the assets.""

Vanessa whispered:

"To who?""

Claire stopped typing.

Her face changed.

I stepped closer.

"What?""

She turned the laptop toward us.

A name appeared.

Not Robert Carter.

Not Vanessa.

Not anyone we expected.

My blood turned cold.

The transfer destination belonged to...

Me.

I stared.

"What?""

Claire shook her head.

"Someone used your identity.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"They're framing you.""

I couldn't speak.

The same documents.

The same signature.

The same plan.

Someone wasn't trying to steal from my father.

They were trying to make me look like the thief.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from my father.

I opened it.

*I was wrong.*

I froze.

A second message appeared.

*I thought I had protected you. I didn't realize I was protecting you from the wrong person.*

I looked at Claire.

"Can we contact him?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because your father didn't send these.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What?""

She pointed.

"Your father is still in custody.""

Silence.

Someone else had access to his phone.

Someone pretending to be him.

Someone who knew exactly what to say.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Wearing a simple jacket.

I didn't recognize him.

But Claire did.

Her face lost all color.

"No...""

The man looked at me.

"Michael.""

My voice was quiet.

"Who are you?""

He looked at the red folder.

Then at me.

"My name is Daniel Brooks.""

Claire stepped backward.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I was hoping you'd say that.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

He smiled sadly.

"Because it means Arthur never told you.""

"Told me what?""

Daniel looked at the photograph of my mother and Robert.

Then back at me.

"I was your father's closest friend before Robert Carter destroyed everything.""

I didn't move.

"What does that have to do with me?""

He took a breath.

"Everything.""

He stepped forward.

"Your father didn't hide the truth because he was protecting you from Robert.""

I stared.

"Then who?""

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

"He was protecting you from me.""

The room went silent.

Claire whispered:

"Daniel...""

He ignored her.

"I was the one who discovered Robert's plan fifteen years ago.""

"Then why did my father hate you?""

Daniel's face changed.

"He didn't.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He thought I was dead.""

My heartbeat increased.

"What?""

Daniel looked at the folder.

"Because the night of the accident...""

He paused.

"Your father saw me in the car.""

I felt cold.

"You were there?""

He nodded.

"And he believed I betrayed him.""

I stared at him.

"Did you?""

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, he seemed afraid.

"No.""

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

"But the person who did...""

He looked toward the door.

"...is someone you've trusted your entire life.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Who?""

Daniel reached into his jacket.

And pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

The image showed my father.

My mother.

Robert.

And one more person.

Someone standing behind them.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been with my family since I was a child.

Daniel whispered:

"The person who destroyed your family was never outside it.""

I picked up the photograph.

And when I saw the face...

May you like

I couldn't speak.

Because the person in the picture was the last person I ever expected.
