Chapter 4: The Name Behind the Fortune
The message on Vanessa’s phone haunted me.
*Ask your father.*
Three simple words.
Three words that felt like a warning.
Vanessa stared at the screen as if she was afraid to touch it.
"What does that mean?"" I asked.
She swallowed.
"I don't know.""
But she was lying.
I knew her.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The woman standing in front of me looked different from the woman who used to hold my hand during late-night walks and tell me she loved my quiet life.
Now she looked like someone calculating her next move.
I turned away from her and walked toward my father.
He was standing near the entrance, surrounded by strangers who suddenly wanted to shake his hand.
The same people who had ignored him ten minutes earlier.
The same people who had watched Diane call him trash.
Now they were smiling.
"Mr. Bennett, it is an honor.""
"Your work has changed thousands of lives.""
"I had no idea you were the founder.""
My father politely nodded at each person, but I could see the discomfort in his eyes.
He hated attention.
He always had.
I pushed through the crowd.
"Dad.""
His face softened when he saw me.
"Are you okay?""
I almost laughed.
That was the first thing he asked.
Not about the humiliation.
Not about the wedding.
Me.
"I'm fine," I said.
He looked at me carefully.
"You don't look fine.""
I glanced back at Vanessa.
She was still standing beside the altar, frozen.
"I need answers.""
My father sighed.
"I know.""
Claire stepped closer.
"I think it's time.""
I looked at her.
"Time for what?""
She exchanged a glance with my father.
"The truth.""
My father looked toward the ballroom.
"Not here.""
Claire nodded.
"There is a private room upstairs.""
Before we could move, Diane blocked our path.
Her face was tight.
The arrogance she had worn earlier was gone.
"Arthur.""
My father stopped.
Diane forced a smile.
"I think we should talk.""
My father's expression didn't change.
"About what?""
She looked around.
"About this misunderstanding.""
I stared at her.
Misunderstanding.
That was what she called publicly humiliating him.
Diane lowered her voice.
"I didn't know.""
My father looked at her.
"And if you did?""
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
He walked past her.
I followed.
But Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"Michael, wait.""
I turned.
Her eyes were filled with panic.
"Please.""
I said nothing.
She looked around, making sure nobody was listening.
"I made a mistake.""
The words sounded rehearsed.
"What mistake?""
She hesitated.
"The way I reacted.""
I looked at her.
"Your mother called my father garbage.""
"I know.""
"And you laughed.""
Her eyes dropped.
"I was nervous.""
"Nervous?""
She nodded quickly.
"I didn't know what to do.""
I stared at her.
"You knew exactly what to do.""
She looked hurt.
"Michael...""
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"You chose.""
The silence between us was painful.
Then she whispered:
"I didn't know who your father really was.""
That sentence changed something inside me.
Because she wasn't apologizing for hurting him.
She was apologizing because she had discovered he mattered.
I stepped back.
"That's the problem.""
I walked away.
The private room upstairs was small and quiet.
For the first time that night, I felt like I could breathe.
My father sat down slowly.
Claire placed the documents on the table.
"I should have told you sooner.""
I looked at him.
"Why didn't you?""
He stared at the papers.
"Because money changes people.""
I leaned back.
"Dad, I spent my whole life thinking we struggled because you had no choice.""
He smiled sadly.
"We did struggle.""
I frowned.
"You were a billionaire.""
He nodded.
"And I still packed your lunch every morning.""
I couldn't respond.
He looked at me.
"Michael, I had money. I didn't have time.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
"I missed your first baseball game because I was working.""
He looked down.
"I missed your graduation ceremony because I was stuck in another country trying to fix a company problem.""
His voice became quieter.
"I thought if I gave you a normal life, maybe you wouldn't feel like you were raised by a wallet.""
I swallowed.
"You could have told me.""
"I know.""
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
That word again.
My father apologized too much.
Even when he was the one who had been hurt.
Claire opened another folder.
"There is something else.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She pulled out a document.
"Your father transferred ownership of several major assets into a family trust.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
She looked at my father.
"He wanted his son protected.""
My father nodded.
"After your mother left, I made sure nobody could ever take advantage of you.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Nobod—"
I stopped.
Because I remembered Vanessa's message.
I remembered the unknown number.
I remembered the fear on her face.
Claire noticed.
"You received something.""
It wasn't a question.
I looked at her.
"How did you know?""
She sighed.
"Because this isn't the first time someone has tried to get close to Mr. Bennett's family.""
My father's face hardened.
"What are you saying?""
Claire opened another file.
"I'm saying Vanessa Carter was not the first person to show interest after learning about your inheritance.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
My father looked shocked.
"Claire.""
"I investigated because of the wedding.""
She hesitated.
"And because someone accessed private information about Michael's trust.""
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
"Who?""
Claire looked at me.
"We don't know yet.""
She slid a photograph across the table.
My hands went cold.
It was Vanessa.
Standing outside a building.
Talking to someone.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
My father saw my expression.
"Michael?""
I picked up the photo.
"That's...""
Claire nodded.
"Your future father-in-law.""
My heart stopped.
Diane's husband.
Vanessa's father.
Robert Carter.
The man who had spent years pretending to respect me.
The man who had congratulated me earlier that evening.
The man who had shaken my father's hand after insulting him behind his back.
"What were they talking about?"" I asked.
Claire's voice was low.
"We don't know.""
She opened another page.
"But we found something else.""
A printed email.
An email sent three months before my wedding.
The subject line was clear.
*Project Bennett Trust.*
My hands trembled.
I looked at my father.
"Did you know?""
He didn't answer immediately.
And that scared me more than anything.
Finally, he whispered:
"I suspected.""
I stared at him.
"You suspected my fiancée was after money?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"I suspected someone was.""
The door suddenly opened.
A security officer stepped inside.
"Mr. Bennett.""
My father stood.
"What happened?""
The officer looked uncomfortable.
"We found someone trying to leave the property.""
Claire frowned.
"Who?""
The officer looked at me.
Then at my father.
"Vanessa Carter.""
My heart sank.
"Where is she going?""
The officer hesitated.
"She was carrying documents.""
"What documents?""
He looked down.
"The original prenuptial agreement.""
I froze.
Because I knew Vanessa had signed it.
I had watched her.
But then the officer added:
"Except the version she had isn't the one we filed.""
Everyone went silent.
My father slowly turned toward me.
And for the first time that night, I saw anger in his eyes.
"Michael...""
He took a breath.
"Your wedding wasn't the beginning of this.""
May you like
He looked at the door where Vanessa had disappeared.
"It was the final step.""
