Chapter 5: The Contract That Changed Everything
I couldn't move.
The words kept repeating in my head.
*The final step.*
Not a wedding.
Not a celebration.
A step.
A plan.
A carefully designed trap.
I left the private room without saying anything.
I needed to see her.
I needed to hear her explain it.
Maybe there was another reason.
Maybe there was something I didn't understand.
Maybe the woman I loved wasn't capable of destroying me.
But deep down, I already knew.
The hardest truth isn't discovering someone betrayed you.
It's realizing the signs were there all along.
I found Vanessa near the parking lot.
She was standing beside her car.
The wedding dress that had looked beautiful under the ballroom lights now looked like a costume.
She turned when she saw me.
"Michael.""
Her voice cracked.
"Please let me explain.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Explain what?""
She looked away.
"The documents.""
"What documents?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
I laughed quietly.
"I can't believe this.""
"Michael, it's not what you think.""
"Then tell me what it is.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
"Who contacted you?""
Her eyes widened.
"What?""
"Who told you about my father?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know about him.""
I stared at her.
"Really?""
"Really.""
Her voice became desperate.
"I didn't know he was wealthy.""
I looked at her.
"Then why were you investigating my family?""
Silence.
The parking lot suddenly felt empty.
She looked down.
"Because my father told me to.""
The honesty shocked me.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
"Your father?""
She nodded slowly.
"Robert.""
I felt something break.
"Why?""
She wiped her eyes.
"I don't know everything.""
"Try.""
She took a deep breath.
"My father said your family had hidden assets. He said your father wasn't who he appeared to be.""
"And you believed him?""
She looked ashamed.
"I trusted my family.""
I nodded slowly.
"More than me.""
She didn't answer.
Because she couldn't.
I looked at her wedding ring.
Three years.
Three years of memories.
Three years of believing we were building something real.
"Did you love me?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
"Then why?""
She whispered:
"Because I thought I could have both.""
My chest tightened.
"Both what?""
She looked at me.
"You and the security.""
There it was.
The truth.
Not money.
Not power.
Security.
She wanted the life I could provide.
Not necessarily the person I was.
I removed my ring.
Her face changed.
"Michael...""
I placed it in her hand.
"I need to know one thing.""
She looked at me.
"Did your family plan this wedding?""
She went completely still.
That was all I needed.
But then she whispered:
"My father planned the meeting.""
I frowned.
"What meeting?""
She looked terrified.
"The first time I met you.""
My blood turned cold.
"What?""
She started crying.
"I thought it was a coincidence.""
"Was it?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
The world seemed to tilt.
I remembered.
The coffee shop.
The spilled drink.
The way she apologized.
The way she somehow knew exactly what to say.
I thought it was fate.
It wasn't.
Vanessa covered her face.
"I didn't know how far it would go.""
"How far?""
She looked at me.
"My father wanted access to the Bennett Trust.""
I felt sick.
"And marrying me was the easiest way.""
She nodded.
Before I could respond, headlights appeared at the entrance.
A black SUV stopped.
The door opened.
Robert Carter stepped out.
He wasn't surprised to see me.
In fact, he looked almost amused.
"Well.""
He adjusted his jacket.
"I was wondering when Arthur would finally tell you.""
I stared at him.
"You planned this.""
He smiled.
"Careful, Michael.""
I clenched my fists.
"You used your daughter.""
His smile faded slightly.
"No.""
He looked at Vanessa.
"She made her choice.""
Vanessa looked away.
Robert walked closer.
"Your father always thought he could hide behind kindness.""
He laughed softly.
"But wealthy people always make the same mistake.""
"What mistake?""
"They believe love can't be bought.""
He looked at my ringless hand.
"But everything has a price.""
I stared at him.
"You think you won?""
His smile returned.
"I don't think.""
He pulled out a folder.
"I know.""
He opened it.
Inside was a copy of a document.
My name.
My signature.
My stomach dropped.
"Where did you get that?""
Robert smiled.
"From your fiancée.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
"I never signed that.""
Robert tilted his head.
"Maybe not.""
He stepped closer.
"But someone did.""
I grabbed the document.
And then I saw the signature.
My blood turned cold.
Because it was mine.
Except I had never written it.
Robert whispered:
"Your father taught you never to trust strangers.""
He smiled.
"But he forgot to teach you something else.""
"What?""
Robert looked directly into my eyes.
"Never trust the person standing beside you.""
Behind him, Vanessa started crying.
And then my phone rang.
The number on the screen was my father's security team.
I answered.
A voice came through.
"Michael, you need to come back immediately.""
My heart raced.
"What happened?""
The man paused.
May you like
Then said:
"Your father has been arrested.""
