Chapter 7: The Red Folder
My father's voice echoed through the ballroom.
"If you're watching this, Michael... then someone has finally come for everything I built.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The entire room watched the screen above the stage as if the world had frozen.
I stood there, staring at the face of the man who had spent my entire life protecting me.
The man who never complained.
The man who hid billions of dollars just so I could grow up without feeling different.
Now he was sitting somewhere behind bars, and his final message was playing in front of hundreds of people.
My father's recorded image looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
But calm.
"If this message has appeared," he continued, "it means someone has accessed the Bennett family security system.""
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Claire immediately stepped toward the control panel.
"Who activated this?""
The technician shook his head.
"I don't know. It started automatically.""
My father's voice continued.
"Michael, I know you probably have questions. I know you feel betrayed.""
My throat tightened.
"But there are things I kept from you because I wanted to protect you.""
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Her face was pale.
Robert Carter stood behind the crowd, watching silently.
Too silently.
My father continued.
"The person responsible for what is happening has been planning this for a long time.""
The screen flashed.
A timestamp appeared.
The recording had been created five years earlier.
Five years.
Before Vanessa and I met.
Before the wedding.
Before any of this.
"Michael, if Robert Carter is involved...""
The entire room gasped.
Robert's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
My father continued.
"Do not confront him without proof.""
The screen went black.
A single sentence appeared.
*Find the red folder.*
The lights came back on.
Everyone started talking at once.
Questions.
Accusations.
Fear.
I didn't hear any of it.
I was looking at Robert.
He was already walking toward the exit.
I followed.
"Robert.""
He stopped.
Slowly turned.
"What?""
I held up my phone.
"My father knew about you.""
Robert smiled.
"Your father was paranoid.""
"Was he?""
I stepped closer.
"Then why did he say your name?""
For the first time, his confidence weakened.
Only for a moment.
Then he recovered.
"Michael, you're emotional.""
He shook his head.
"Your father is in trouble, and you're looking for someone to blame.""
I stared at him.
"You framed him.""
He laughed.
"Careful.""
"No.""
My voice became harder.
"You wanted his company. You wanted his money. You used your daughter to get close to me.""
A few guests nearby turned to listen.
Robert's eyes narrowed.
"Watch yourself.""
I smiled coldly.
"Why? Afraid people might hear the truth?""
His jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, Vanessa appeared.
"Stop.""
We both looked at her.
She was crying.
Not fake tears.
Real ones.
"I need to tell him.""
Robert's face changed.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at her father.
"No.""
Her voice shook.
"I can't do this anymore.""
The ballroom became quiet.
She looked at me.
"I knew about the plan.""
My heart sank.
Even though I already suspected it, hearing it hurt.
"What plan?""
She wiped her tears.
"Your father. The trust. The marriage.""
Every word felt like another cut.
Robert stepped forward.
"Don't say another word.""
She ignored him.
"My father told me to get close to you.""
The guests stared.
"I was supposed to convince you to transfer control of the family trust after marriage.""
I looked at her.
"Was anything real?""
Her lips trembled.
"At first...""
She stopped.
That answer hurt more than anything.
"At first?""
She looked down.
"At first, no.""
I nodded slowly.
"And later?""
She cried.
"Later, I fell in love with you.""
I wanted to believe her.
That was the worst part.
A piece of me still wanted to.
But another part remembered my father standing alone while she laughed.
"I don't know what's real anymore.""
She whispered:
"Neither do I.""
Then Claire rushed toward us.
"Michael.""
I turned.
Her face was urgent.
"We found something.""
She held a small device.
"Your father's security system had a backup location.""
"What location?""
She looked at me.
"Your childhood home.""
I froze.
"My old house?""
She nodded.
"The one your father sold ten years ago.""
I remembered.
The small house on Maple Street.
The place where my father and I had lived before everything changed.
"Why there?""
Claire handed me a key.
"Because the red folder was never in a bank vault.""
I looked at the key.
"Where was it?""
She lowered her voice.
"Hidden in the one place your father believed nobody would ever search.""
I stared at her.
"Where?""
She looked toward the exit.
"Your bedroom.""
The old house looked smaller than I remembered.
The paint was faded.
The front porch creaked beneath my feet.
But every corner held a memory.
My father's old chair.
The wall where he measured my height every birthday.
The kitchen where he taught me how to cook when we couldn't afford takeout.
I walked inside with Claire.
Nobody spoke.
Because we both understood something.
This wasn't just a search.
It was a journey back.
My old bedroom was exactly how I remembered it.
The faded blue walls.
The wooden desk.
The bookshelf my father built by hand.
Claire looked around.
"Where would he hide something?""
I ran my fingers along the desk.
"I don't know.""
Then I stopped.
A memory surfaced.
I was twelve years old.
I had asked my father why he kept an old wooden box under my bed.
He told me:
"Everyone has something valuable they protect.""
I pulled the bed away from the wall.
There it was.
A small wooden panel.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a red folder.
Claire inhaled sharply.
"That's it.""
I picked it up.
For a moment, I didn't open it.
Because I knew whatever was inside would change everything.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Michael Bennett.""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"Someone who knows why your father never told you the truth about your mother.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What did you say?""
The man continued.
"Open the red folder.""
I looked at it.
"Who are you?""
His voice became quieter.
"Someone who was there the night Arthur Bennett lost everything.""
The call ended.
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
"What?""
I slowly opened the folder.
The first document inside had a name written across the top.
A name I hadn't seen in twenty years.
My mother's name.
And underneath it...
May you like
A photograph.
A photograph of my mother standing beside Robert Carter.
