Chapter 8: The Evidence That Vanished

Nobody slept that night.

Not Principal Brooks.

Not Detective Collins.

Not Marcus.

And definitely not Lily.

The message on the laptop had changed everything.

Before, they were investigating the person behind the curtain.

Now they knew the person behind the curtain was investigating them.

The next morning, Detective Collins arrived before sunrise.

She carried two cups of coffee and a folder.

Lily was already there.

She sat in the waiting area with her mother, who had finally been told the full story.

Her mother hugged her tightly.

“You scared me more than you will ever understand.””

Lily looked down.

“I was scared too.””

Her mother touched her face.

“Then why did you do it?””

Lily thought about Noah.

About the camera.

About the red light turning back on.

“Because nobody else knew.””

Her mother closed her eyes.

Then hugged her again.

Inside the principal’s office, Detective Collins spread evidence across the desk.

“Someone accessed our system remotely last night.””

Marcus frowned.

“The school network?””

“Yes.””

“Can you trace it?””

“We’re trying.””

Principal Brooks looked exhausted.

“How is this possible?””

Detective Collins looked at him.

“Because whoever did this knows the system.””

Marcus pointed at the documents.

“And Gregory Vale?””

“We’re investigating him.””

Principal Brooks sighed.

“He built this school’s security network.””

The room went quiet.

“Wait,” Marcus said.

“What?””

“Who installed the cameras?””

Principal Brooks looked at him.

“Vale’s company.””

Detective Collins slowly nodded.

“That changes things.””

Lily stood outside the door listening.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood enough.

The person who donated the cameras was also the person who might have controlled them.

The very thing meant to protect children could have been used to hide the truth.

Later that afternoon, Detective Collins brought Lily and Noah into the library.

She had something to show them.

“We found another recording.””

Noah immediately looked nervous.

“Ethan?””

“Yes.””

They watched the screen.

This video was different.

It wasn’t hidden.

It looked like a normal classroom recording.

Ethan sat at a desk.

He looked exhausted.

Then Ms. Grant entered.

Lily’s hands tightened.

The audio was unclear.

But one thing was obvious.

Ethan was afraid.

Then the door opened.

Richard Hale entered.

A few seconds later, Gregory Vale appeared.

Noah covered his mouth.

“He was there.””

Detective Collins nodded.

The video continued.

Vale spoke to Ethan.

No sound.

But his body language was clear.

He was threatening him.

Then Ethan stood.

He pointed toward the camera.

He knew he was being watched.

Then something unexpected happened.

He walked directly toward it.

The screen filled with his face.

And he whispered something.

Detective Collins enhanced the audio.

Static filled the room.

Then Ethan’s voice came through.

“If you’re watching this…”

Everyone leaned closer.

“Don’t trust the cameras.””

Lily froze.

The video continued.

“They’re not protecting you.””

A pause.

“They’re helping him.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Noah looked terrified.

“He knew.””

“Yes,” Detective Collins said.

“He knew the cameras were dangerous.””

Marcus stood.

“So why did Lily turning one back on save him?””

Detective Collins looked at the screen.

“Because someone forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“They thought nobody would ever turn it back on.””

Lily stared at the camera image.

The red light.

The same red light she had restored.

A tiny action.

A huge mistake for whoever was hiding the truth.

Suddenly, the library door opened.

A police officer rushed inside.

“Detective Collins.””

She turned.

“What happened?””

The officer looked at the group.

“We found Richard Hale.””

“Where?””

“At his house.””

“And?””

The officer hesitated.

“He’s gone.””

Principal Brooks stood.

“Gone?””

“He left early this morning.””

Detective Collins frowned.

“Did he take anything?””

The officer handed her a bag.

“His computer was destroyed.””

Marcus looked angry.

“He knew we were coming.””

Detective Collins looked inside the bag.

A broken hard drive.

A damaged phone.

And one handwritten note.

She unfolded it.

Everyone watched her face.

“What does it say?”” Lily asked.

Detective Collins didn’t answer.

She read it again.

Then slowly handed it to Principal Brooks.

The note contained only six words.

“Ask the girl who plugged it in.””

Everyone looked at Lily.

Her heart dropped.

Because suddenly she understood.

They weren’t just trying to hide the truth.

They wanted her involved.

May you like

They wanted her to find something.

Something they knew only she could see.
