Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the File

The classroom door closed behind Ms. Grant, but the silence she left behind felt heavier than any noise.

Lily Carter stood beside Noah, staring at the paper in Principal Brooks’s hands.

She had expected the truth to feel like a victory.

She thought once the camera turned back on, once adults finally saw what happened, everything would become simple.

Bad person.

Good people.

Problem solved.

But the look on Principal Brooks’s face told her this was not the end.

It was the beginning of something much bigger.

“Who is that name?”” Marcus Hill asked.

The principal didn’t answer immediately.

He looked down at the document again.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“No,” he whispered.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

Principal Brooks slowly looked up.

The color had drained from his face.

“This record belongs to someone who should never have been involved.””

Lily looked between them.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

That scared her more than anything.

Adults always answered questions when they knew the answer.

When they stayed quiet, it usually meant the truth was worse.

Noah sat on the floor with his arms wrapped around himself.

Principal Brooks noticed.

He immediately lowered himself beside him.

“Noah, I need you to listen to me carefully.””

The boy looked up.

“You did the right thing by keeping this paper.””

Noah swallowed.

“But I wasn’t supposed to have it.””

“Why not?””

Noah looked toward the hallway.

His voice became smaller.

“Because she told me if I showed anyone, they would take me away.””

Lily felt anger rise in her chest.

“She lied.””

Noah nodded.

“I know now.””

Principal Brooks looked at the document again.

“Where did you find this?””

Noah hesitated.

“In her desk.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

Marcus frowned.

“You went through her desk?””

Noah immediately looked frightened.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus softened.

“No. I’m not angry. I’m asking.””

Noah rubbed his hands together.

“She kept a drawer locked. But yesterday, she forgot to close it.””

He looked down.

“I saw my name.””

Principal Brooks unfolded the paper completely.

It wasn’t a student report.

It was a private transfer document.

At the top was a student name.

A student who had left Willow Creek Elementary two years earlier.

A student named Ethan Parker.

Lily recognized the name.

Everyone did.

Ethan Parker was the boy adults talked about quietly.

The child who suddenly moved schools after an incident nobody explained.

The child whose parents stopped attending school events.

The child teachers said was “troubled.””

Principal Brooks stared at the page.

“Ethan…”

Marcus looked confused.

“What does Ethan Parker have to do with Noah?””

The principal pointed at the bottom of the document.

There was a signature.

Not Ms. Grant’s.

Someone else’s.

A person who had approved the report.

A person who had covered up the complaints.

Marcus read the signature.

His expression changed.

“Wait.””

He looked at Principal Brooks.

“That’s impossible.””

Lily stepped closer.

“Who signed it?””

The principal slowly said the name.

“Vice Principal Richard Hale.””

The room went completely silent.

Lily knew that name too.

Everyone at school did.

Mr. Hale was the man who gave speeches about kindness.

The man who handed out awards.

The man who always told students:

“Adults are here to protect you.””

Noah’s face turned pale.

“He knew.””

Principal Brooks looked at him.

“What?””

Noah whispered:

“He knew about Ms. Grant.””

The principal’s voice became careful.

“How do you know that?””

Noah stared at the floor.

“Because she told me.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Tell us everything.””

Noah took a deep breath.

His voice shook.

“Ms. Grant said nobody would believe me because Mr. Hale was on her side.””

Lily moved closer.

“What did she do to you?””

Noah looked at his bruised hands.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“She made me stay after class.””

The room became still.

“She said I embarrassed her.””

His voice cracked.

“She said I made her look bad.””

Principal Brooks closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was obvious.

But Noah wasn’t finished.

“She told me she knew what happened to Ethan.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

Noah looked terrified.

“She said…”

He stopped.

Lily reached for his hand.

“It’s okay.””

Noah looked at her.

Then whispered:

“She said Ethan tried to tell someone too.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“And?”” Principal Brooks asked.

Noah swallowed.

“She said nobody listened.””

Outside the classroom, the rain continued falling.

But inside Room 204, everyone felt like the storm had just started.

Principal Brooks stood up.

“We need to find Ethan Parker.””

Marcus nodded.

“I’ll contact his family.””

But before he could leave, Lily noticed something.

The paper in the principal’s hand.

There was another page underneath.

A page nobody had looked at yet.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

Lily pointed.

“There’s something behind that.””

Principal Brooks pulled the second page free.

At first, it looked like another student record.

Then he saw the heading.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

The principal didn’t respond.

He just stared.

Because the second document wasn’t about a student.

It was a list.

A list of names.

Dates.

And next to each name was one word.

“Handled.””

Lily felt her stomach drop.

“How many names are there?””

Principal Brooks slowly counted.

Then he whispered:

“Too many.””

May you like

And at the bottom of the page, written in handwriting that wasn’t Ms. Grant’s, was a final note:

“Next one will be easier.””
