Chapter 6: The Secret Behind The Office Door
The name echoed in Lily’s mind all night.
Richard Hale.
Vice Principal.
The man who shook students’ hands.
The man who smiled during assemblies.
The man who told everyone he was protecting children.
Lily couldn’t understand how someone like that could hide something so terrible.
The next morning, Willow Creek Elementary felt like a different place.
The colorful posters on the walls looked fake.
The cheerful messages about kindness felt like lies.
Lily walked beside Noah through the hallway.
For the first time, Noah wasn’t walking with his head down.
But he wasn’t looking happy either.
He looked tired.
Like someone who had carried a heavy backpack for years.
They stopped outside the counselor’s office.
“Are you okay?”” Lily asked.
Noah shrugged.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s okay.””
He looked at her.
“You always know what to say.””
Lily shook her head.
“No, I don’t.””
“You saved me.””
She looked down.
“I just plugged in a cable.””
Noah smiled faintly.
“No.””
He pointed toward the classroom.
“You turned on the camera.””
Lily understood.
It wasn’t about the cable.
It was about proving someone was watching.
Someone cared.
A few minutes later, Detective Collins arrived with Principal Brooks.
They brought them into the conference room.
On the table was a laptop.
“We found the video,” Detective Collins said.
Noah went still.
Lily reached for his hand.
Detective Collins opened the file.
The screen showed a younger Ethan Parker.
He looked smaller than Lily remembered.
Scared.
Sitting in the same classroom.
The camera angle was different.
Hidden.
Like someone had secretly recorded him.
Ethan looked directly at the camera.
“If anyone finds this…”
His voice shook.
“Please believe me.””
Noah covered his mouth.
Detective Collins paused.
“You don’t have to watch.””
Noah nodded.
“Play it.””
The video continued.
Ethan looked around.
“Ms. Grant hurts kids.””
Lily felt tears forming.
“She tells everyone we’re lying.””
Ethan took a breath.
“But Mr. Hale helps her.””
The room went silent.
“He changes reports.””
The video showed Ethan holding papers.
“He makes things disappear.””
Detective Collins paused.
“Keep watching.””
Ethan looked terrified.
“The worst part is…”
He looked toward the door.
“She’s not the person in charge.””
Everyone looked at each other.
“What does that mean?”” Principal Brooks whispered.
Detective Collins didn’t answer.
The video continued.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“There’s someone else.””
The screen flickered.
Then Ethan said:
“Someone above Mr. Hale.””
The video ended.
No name.
No explanation.
Just darkness.
Lily frowned.
“That’s it?””
Detective Collins nodded.
“That’s all we recovered.””
“But he was trying to tell us who.””
“Yes.””
Noah looked confused.
“Why wouldn’t he finish?””
Marcus, standing near the door, spoke quietly.
“Because someone stopped him.””
The room fell silent.
A horrible possibility entered everyone’s mind.
Ethan didn’t disappear after making the video.
He disappeared because of it.
Principal Brooks stood.
“We need to find who is above Hale.””
Detective Collins nodded.
“We’re working on that.””
She looked at the files.
“And we found another problem.””
She opened a folder.
Inside were copies of old complaints.
Complaints that had been ignored.
Lily scanned the papers.
There were many names.
Many dates.
Many warnings.
But every complaint ended the same way.
Closed.
Resolved.
No action needed.
“How?”” Lily whispered.
Detective Collins looked at her.
“Because someone had the authority to make them disappear.””
Noah suddenly stood.
His chair scraped loudly.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Noah looked terrified.
“I know who.””
Detective Collins stepped closer.
“Who?””
Noah pointed toward the window.
Outside, in the school parking lot, a black car had just arrived.
A man stepped out.
Wearing a suit.
Carrying a briefcase.
Everyone in the office recognized him.
Vice Principal Richard Hale.
But Noah wasn’t looking at him.
He was looking at the person who stepped out behind him.
The person Lily had never met.
The person who made Noah start shaking.
“Who is that?”” Lily asked.
Noah’s voice was barely audible.
“That’s the person Ms. Grant was afraid of.””
The adults turned toward the window.
The stranger looked up at the school building.
Then smiled.
And Lily realized something terrifying.
May you like
Ms. Grant wasn’t the person who had been controlling the school.
She was only following orders.
