Chapter 2: The Girl Who Pressed Record
Lily never forgot the look on Ms. Grant’s face.
Not because it was angry.
Because it was calm.
Anger would have been easier.
Angry people made mistakes.
Calm people planned.
Lily remained frozen beside the wall, one hand still holding the camera cable.
The teacher slowly walked closer.
“Put that down,” Ms. Grant said.
Lily swallowed.
She wanted to obey.
Every part of her wanted to.
But then she looked past the teacher.
She saw Noah still sitting on the floor.
His eyes were full of fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
“No,” Lily whispered.
The word surprised both of them.
Ms. Grant stopped.
“What did you say?””
Lily stood up slowly.
Her knees were shaking, but she forced herself not to step back.
“I said no.””
The teacher stared at her.
“You should be careful, Lily.””
The fact that Ms. Grant knew her name made the room feel even colder.
“You know my name?”” Lily asked.
Ms. Grant smiled slightly.
“I know every student in this classroom.””
Noah spoke quietly.
“Lily, don’t.””
She looked at him.
His face was pale.
But she shook her head.
“Noah, someone has to.””
Ms. Grant walked toward her.
“You’re a good student. I’d hate for one bad decision to ruin your perfect record.””
Lily looked at the camera above her.
“It’s already ruined.””
The teacher’s expression changed.
“What?””
Lily tightened her grip on the cable.
“Because I’m turning it back on.””
For the first time, Ms. Grant looked nervous.
Only for a second.
But Lily saw it.
And that tiny crack gave her courage.
She pulled the cable upward.
Click.
The camera powered on.
The tiny red light blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Recording.
Somewhere else in Willow Creek Elementary, security officer Marcus Hill was drinking coffee when the monitor wall suddenly changed.
One black screen turned bright.
He nearly dropped his cup.
Room 204.
The classroom camera.
The one that had gone offline.
Marcus leaned forward.
“That’s strange.””
He grabbed the radio.
“Control room to administration. Is anyone working on Camera 204?””
No answer.
He stared at the screen.
The image was blurry for a moment.
Then it cleared.
A teacher.
A child on the floor.
Another child standing near the wall.
Marcus’s expression changed instantly.
“Call the principal,” he said.
The assistant beside him looked over.
“What happened?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he was watching.
Back in the classroom, Ms. Grant noticed the tiny red light.
Her face went pale.
“You don’t understand what you just did.””
Lily looked at Noah.
“Yes, I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
Ms. Grant pointed at the door.
“Walk out of this classroom right now, and we can forget this happened.””
Lily almost laughed.
Forget?
She looked at Noah’s bruised hands.
She looked at the camera.
She looked at the woman who had unplugged it.
“No.””
Ms. Grant’s voice became sharper.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No,” Lily said again.
Then she stepped between Ms. Grant and Noah.
“You did.””
The teacher stared at her.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Noah whispered something.
“Lily…”
She turned.
His eyes were fixed on the teacher’s desk.
“What?””
Noah pointed.
“There’s something there.””
Lily looked toward the desk.
At first, she saw only papers.
Then she noticed one folder slightly sticking out from underneath a stack of worksheets.
The label on it made her stomach twist.
NOAH MILLER.
Ms. Grant immediately moved toward it.
Too quickly.
Lily saw that.
“What’s in that folder?”” she asked.
“Nothing.””
But the teacher grabbed it.
And when the folder slipped from her hand for half a second, a photograph fell onto the floor.
Lily picked it up before Ms. Grant could reach it.
It was a picture of Noah.
Taken inside the classroom.
His face was terrified.
On the back of the photo, written in black ink, were four words:
“He needs to learn.””
Lily’s hands started shaking.
Noah looked away.
Like he already knew.
“You knew about this?”” Lily asked.
Noah didn’t answer.
“Lily,” Ms. Grant said quietly, “give me that.””
Lily looked at the teacher.
“No.””
The teacher’s eyes hardened.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Multiple footsteps.
Someone was running.
Ms. Grant looked toward the door.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
The handle began to turn.
May you like
And before the door opened, Lily heard a voice outside say:
“Ms. Grant, step away from the children. Now.””
