Chapter 8: The Last Lie
Ethan didn’t want to read the letter aloud.
I understood why.
Some truths feel too heavy when spoken.
So he read it silently.
Line after line.
His face became harder to understand.
Anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
Finally, he folded the paper.
“He knew.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Knew what?””
Ethan looked at him.
“That I was alive.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“He knew.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Ethan held up the letter.
“Michael found out about me years before you did.””
Dad looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“When?””
“Three years after I was born.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No.””
Ethan looked at her.
“He wrote that he saw me.””
The color disappeared from Claire’s face.
“I never knew.””
Dad stared at the letter.
“What else?””
Ethan swallowed.
“He said he met me.””
Nobody spoke.
“He came to see my mother.””
Claire sat down.
“When?””
“When I was three.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I remember a man coming.””
Dad looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“I didn’t know it was him.””
Ethan looked down.
“He wrote that I had your eyes.””
That sentence destroyed my father.
Because it meant Michael had looked at this child.
A child who carried his brother’s blood.
And still walked away.
“Why?”” Dad whispered.
Ethan continued.
“He said because if you knew about me, everything would change.””
Dad laughed bitterly.
“Everything already changed.””
The letter explained the rest.
Michael had convinced himself that he was protecting the family.
But the more he wrote, the clearer the truth became.
He wasn’t protecting anyone.
He was protecting his place.
He wanted to be the person Dad depended on.
The person who knew all the secrets.
The person who controlled the outcomes.
Then Ethan reached the final page.
And stopped.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“There’s something about you.””
My heart dropped.
“Me?””
He nodded.
The room went quiet.
“What does it say?””
Ethan looked at Dad.
“Michael knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That you and I…”
He couldn’t finish.
Dad understood.
The blood drained from his face.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly, the night of prom came rushing back.
The question.
The name.
The fear.
The impossible coincidence.
Michael knew Ethan existed.
He knew who my father was.
He knew everything.
And yet he allowed us to meet.
“Why would he let that happen?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan turned the page over.
“There’s a note.””
“What note?””
He read it.
His voice barely audible.
*The truth will eventually come out. When it does, Daniel will lose everything.*
Dad looked confused.
“Lose everything?””
Ethan continued.
*His marriage. His daughter. His reputation. His perfect family.*
My blood ran cold.
This wasn’t about fixing the past.
It was revenge.
Michael wanted Dad to suffer.
Not just by losing years with Ethan.
By losing the family he built afterward.
Mom started crying.
“I was part of his plan.””
Dad looked at her.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know. But I believed him. I helped create this.””
Dad didn’t answer.
Because forgiveness was not something he could give in one moment.
Neither could I.
That night, I went to my room and looked at my old prom pictures.
The ones taken before everything changed.
My smile looked strange.
Like it belonged to someone else.
A girl who believed families were simple.
A girl who thought secrets only existed in movies.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Ethan.
*Can we talk?*
I called him.
“What happened?””
He was quiet.
Then:
“I found something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Something Michael didn’t write.””
“Then what?””
“A video.””
I sat up.
“A video?””
“Yes.””
“From Michael?””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“From my mother.””
I froze.
“Why would your mother record something?””
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Because she was afraid she wouldn’t get another chance.””
The next morning, we watched the video.
Claire appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But determined.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If Daniel is watching this, it means the truth finally came out.””
My father moved closer.
Claire continued.
“I need you to know one thing.””
She took a deep breath.
“I never left because I stopped loving you.””
Dad closed his eyes.
Then she said the words nobody expected.
“But there is something Daniel doesn’t know.””
The room became silent.
Claire looked terrified.
“Michael didn’t act alone.””
My father opened his eyes.
“What?””
Claire stared into the camera.
“There was someone else helping him.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Someone inside your own house.””
The video ended.
May you like
And everyone slowly turned toward the same person.
My mother.
